As a former student of psychology, I am continuously fascinated by those factors which cause a person’s mood to drastically change from one moment to the next, often with no discernable explanation. One minute, happy, positive energy; the next, sullen, negative bitterness. It’s enough to make your head spin. Of course, there are a million factors that could possibly contribute to such sudden alterations in behavior; but, if you’re like me, you immediately look for the root of the problem. Is it my fault? Did I do something, say something, unknowingly

cause some perceived slight…what? Chances are, it’s something else entirely. (Read: Everything is not always about you!) The thing is, when you’re in a foul frame of mind, it’s difficult to see beyond the black cloud. Best everyone stay out of your way until the storm has passed, as you can’t be held accountable for your tone, whether impatient, annoyed, indifferent… in short, anything but friendly. Negativity breeds more negativity, and those who dare to cross paths with those in such a state are just asking for trouble. And so the cycle continues. Day after day of trying to dodge the slings and arrows of those who

The Showhouse is located at 393 Oyster Bay Road in Mill Neck. Help is needed to staff the beautifully decorated rooms and to greet visitors. The shifts are 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. or 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesdays through Fridays and 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. or 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. Help is needed most on Thursdays, Fridays and the weekend. Babylon High School juniors Jack Corcoran, Ryan Cosgro and Mike Logan showcased their original research as they competed in this year’s New York State Science and Engineering Fair. This was the students’ first time competing at the state-level Intel affiliated

Forty-one Babylon Junior-Senior High School students qualified to compete at this year’s New York State DECA Career Competition, where they performed extremely well against more than 3,000 other students. During the event, the students showcased their skills in such areas as travel and tourism, retail merchandising and personal financial literacy. As a result of their demonstrated skills, 12 students placed in the top 10 in their respective categories, with some winning multiple honors. Ryan Cosgro, who won three top 10 medals in his test, two role-plays and placed in the top 10 (fifth) for Restaurant and Food Service management, qualified to compete in the DECA International Career Development Conference. Emma Rende, Babylon’s

competition, where participants come from all across the New York. The students presented their independent research projects to professional scientists from academics and industrial fields. The projects covered a variety of topics, from observing how chemical pollutants

impact members of local ecosystems (Jack), to working to extract a potential biofuel from green algae (Ryan), and working to see how biological compounds may work to combat antibiotic resistance (Mike).

Babylon High School’s ninth and tenth-grade research students had the opportunity to go behind the scenes at Stony Brook University’s Cancer Research Center and participate in a grant program with the Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition. The students were honored by the BBCC by being asked to help decide who would receive the funds raised throughout the year by the Coalition. After reading and discussing the research

proposals submitted by Stony Brook scientists, the students voted on which proposal they felt most deserved the grant from a scientific stand point. Throughout the day, the students also had the chance to visit Stony Brook Hospital to speak with world-renowned researchers at the Cancer Center and take private tours of the state-of-the-art laboratories to observe and participate in cutting edge cancer research and learn about new technologies

being implemented in the war on cancer. The day culminated with a tour of a life sciences laboratory on the campus, and the presentation of the check from the Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition to the grant winner Dr. Jian Cao, who took students on a tour of his lab and shared his research with students as well. How many times have you heard someone say “if only I had done things differently”, “if only he would have lived longer”. The world is full of “could haves” and “should haves”. But the reality is that we cannot change what has already taken place. We can only deal with what has taken place. Unfortunately, people die, tragedies happen and people young and old become very ill and do not recover. We cannot change these events but we can change how we react and deal with these events. We mourn and grieve. We get depressed and angry. If we lose sight of the light at the end of the tunnel, we become overwhelmed by what would have been instead of coping and dealing with what is. Life is not easy and it is definitely not always fair. Our goal in dealing with all the trouble in life is to try to make the world around us the world it should be. By that I mean, we help ourselves by helping others. We feel better when we make others feel better. We can’t change the past nor can we change the present, but we can strive to change the future. We can all strive to make the world a better place, not only for ourselves but for our children and our children’s children.
