Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey recently attended a World Water Day 2015 program at the Bergen Point Wastewater Plant. Others participating in the day’s events included, but were not limited to, the Suffolk County Executive, various other elected officials, and Girl Scouts from across Suffolk County. Participants in the program had the opportunity to see firsthand how pollution is removed from the wastewater at Bergen Point, which is a process that is quite extensive and vital to environmental preservation. Additionally, those on the tour took part in different activities, under the guidance of experts, to learn about the water quality in their respective communities. Furthermore, the importance of the Great South Bay was discussed in depth, and everyone gained meaningful insight on what they can do to keep it clean and enjoyable for generations to come.

Babylon Junior-Senior High School marked World Languages week from March 9th-13th with a series of interactive activities. A different language was featured during the weeklong celebration and daily announcements were made either in that dialectal or facts about countries speaking that language were shared. Within the school’s foreign language classes, teachers coordinated spirited

projects correlating to the featured language. Recognizing the benefits of having an early exposure to a foreign language, the high school teachers visited the sixth-grade classes at Babylon Memorial Grade School to host a workshop. Following the theme of the week – “Learn A Foreign Language, Gain A New Perspective” – the group completed an activity called the “Man On The Moon.” The students first

learned how to speak in either French or Spanish and several key phrases in the target language, including the colors, facial features and the numbers 1-10. They then created pictures depicting their perspective of a man on the moon. The completed pieces were put on display in the school’s lobby for all to enjoy. Junior Islander Honored Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer and Councilwoman Jackie Gordon joined with the Town Board to honor twelve year old Robert Hyde of North Babylon, who was the only resident from the town to make the Junior Islanders hockey team. The Junior Islanders are made up of eleven and twelve year olds from Long Island who are among the best hockey players in the

area. Supervisor Schaffer and Councilwoman Gordon joined with Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez, Councilman Tom Donnelly, Councilman Lindsay Henry, Receiver of Taxes Corinne DiSomma and Town Clerk Carol Quirk to present Robert with an official Town Proclamation honoring his achievement. Junior Islanders are chosen by former New York Islanders forward Benoit

Hogue during tryouts in the summer. The team competes in the annual Quebec International PeeWee Hockey Tournament held every February in Quebec City, which features over 2,300 athletes from 16 countries and is attended by over 200,000 fans throughout the eleven day event. Current Islanders Rick DiPietro and Kyle Okposo have played in the tournament.
