Under Governor Cuomo’s Open for Fishing and Hunting initiative, a two-day, hands-on program on hunting safety will be offered on April 26th and 27th by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s (DEC) Sportsman Education Program, the agency announced today. “Hunting and fishing are an important part of Long Island’s heritage, and we are very fortunate that the region offers a multitude of diverse and rewarding recreational opportunities,” said DEC Commissioner Joe Martens. “The 2014 Youth Conservation Program is the perfect way to introduce the next generation of sportsmen and women to hunting ethics and teach them how to be responsible hunters from the start. By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Discovering The Passion To Do What You Love … This is the topic I selected for my upcoming presentation at the annual C.W. Post Honors Conference, a oneday schedule of seminars and panels, lectures and performances, all centered around a common theme, this year’s being Creative Engagement. When initially approached about the prospect of being a part of this Conference, one I had attended each year of my own tenure at C.W. Post, my first reaction was the usual mix of anxiety and sheer terror that comes when any form of public speaking is broached. And this, for an entire hour, in front of the best and the brightest my alma mater has to offer? I could feel the panic setting in, and the event was still months away.

Now, only one week remains ‘til the big day – and I’m still wrestling with what, exactly, I have to offer this group of impressionable young minds, all at the point in their lives where they are desperately trying to do exactly what my title suggests – discover that passion which will drive them into a particular field, hopefully to stay, for a long and fulfilling career. I guess a good starting point would be the initial inspiration for my topic, a letter I received from a local reader many months ago, in response to a column I had recently published, stating: “I wanted to let you know that indeed your words were read and inspired someone… as a humble writer myself, I know that is all we really want after all.” Creative Engagement at its best, no? Just the knowledge that my words had reached someone is some of the most positive feedback one can receive.

This is not to say that we all need constant pats on the back in order to feel valued and successful (although some certainly do). It simply reaffirms the notion that what we do for a living should be more than a job; it should reach far beyond the scope of merely being a means to an end, a way to pay the bills, etc. Above all else, it should engage YOU. If others find a similar connection through you, so much the better, an added bonus. I still don’t know exactly what I will say once I step to the head of the classroom a little over a week from now. But I suppose a good starting point is simply speaking openly and honestly and attempting to make a connection. And if I can reach even one person and help them discover his/her own passion in life, I will consider it a success.

her book in braille and if the publisher then translated it. Mrs. Finke told the students all about the special talking computer she uses to read, write, and do her research on the internet. Another student asked about how a blind person gets a dog and Mrs. Finke told them all about wonderful nonprofit organizations, such as Guiding Eyes for the Blind in upstate New York and The Seeing Eye in New Jersey, where she’d been paired up with her former guide dog, Hanni. The most poignant question came a short way into the Q&A session from a small girl in her neatly pressed SSCM uniform, “What does it feel like to be blind?” Mrs. Finke’s response moved the group, young and old. “Wow, what a good question…I’m not sad about it, which you might think,” she’d said. Having battled juvenile diabetes and going blind by the age of twenty-six, she’d told the students that she felt she’s learned such a great deal on her journey that she never would have, if this had

not been her path. She went on to describe how it can be frustrating at times, because it just takes longer to do certain things and she has to remind herself to slow down and take her time to avoid fumbling…it seemed a good lesson for us all to consider in our fast-paced day to day lives, sighted or not. Her old friend, Hanni, is now retired from guide dog work and living happily with her retirement family, getting chubby from treats and living the good life, so hard-working Whitney, a four year-old Labrador/ Golden Retriever mix, has been by Beth Finke’s side for about two years now. The pair move and function as one and as the author spoke to the group of children in SSCM’s auditorium, her faithful friend looked up at her in admiration, as if hanging on every word. Mrs. Finke’s demonstration of how Whitney works to guide her to the nearest exit brought nearly every student quietly to their feet as they leaned forward and crane their

necks to watch the pair make their way down the hall and back, stepping easily in stride with one another. Before Mrs. Finke left the group for the day, she was kind enough to offer high praise to the students of SSCM, saying that children often have a very difficult time refraining from petting or talking directly to a guide dog, but she can tell how disciplined and respectful her new friends at SSCM are, for which both she and Whitney were graciously thankful. Equally thankful for the visit, the children at SSCM are working on an appropriate message of thanks to send along to Mrs. Finke to express their gratitude for her insightful and interesting visit. HIBERNIAN OF THE YEAR - On Saturday night March 15th, Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey, honored A.O.H Division 2 Hibernian of the Year Cormac Gerrity at Division 2’s Annual St. Patrick’s Ball. Cormac Gerrity has been a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians since he was 16 years old, serving in numerous different roles including becoming the youngest President of Division 2 at the age of 27. Students at Saints Cyril and Methodius (SSCM) School in Deer Park were treated to a unique visit from award-winning author Beth Finke and her seeing-eye dog, Whitney. Mrs. Finke is not only a winner of the ASPCA’s Henry Bergh Children’s Book Award, she is also a teacher, a journalist, an

with the students at SSCM. From the minute Mrs. Finke and her canine companion, Whitney, entered the auditorium, the youngsters were all ears. They sat rapt as Mrs. Finke described what life was like relying on a furry friend to help guide her through her day, while illustrating just how active and independent a blind person can be. With the same delightful detail found in her most recent work, a children’s book called Hanni and Beth: Safe and Sound, the writer shared stories of their adventures and described the importance of respecting a working dog and allowing him to focus on his job to the best of his ability. The enthusiastic students of SSCM each had questions burning in their minds and the only thing Mrs. Finke may have missed out on was not being able to enjoy seeing the number of hands that flew into the air when she announced it was time for some Q&A. One student wanted to know if she had written

DECA Chapter Competes

Babylon High School’s DECA chapter competed in the 54th Annual DECA State Career Conference in Rochester this winter and was recognized with several awards. The high school was one of only 10 schools from across the state to receive the prestigious Community Service Recognition Award. Five students were awarded New York State DECA Honor Society status and 13 students received individual awards. The chapter earned the community service recognition based on the team’s efforts in raising $500 for Relay for Life, the DECA-appointed charity of the year. Membership into the NYS DECA Honor Society required the students – Jayne Dittmeier, Daniel Lum, Emma Rende, Matthew Steffanata and Matthew Taggart – to attend two or more state competitions and exhibit exemplary performance in business classes.

Babylon Elementary and Memorial Grade School students celebrated literacy through a series of fun and educational activities this March. In coordination with the buildings’ K-6 PTA, the students took part in this year’s Parents as Reading Partners program, themed the Olympics – Faster, Higher, Stronger. Families at both schools were encouraged to make time daily to enjoy reading materials together and students were invited to take part in several themed

events each week. At the elementary school, students proudly dressed as their favorite story time character, wore their pajamas and brought their favorite bedtime story to school, had a teddy bear picnic with a cuddly stuffed animal, and enjoyed a breakfast of champions. The students kept track of the minutes they read on tally sheets – each of which included a set of 10 torches, each representing 15 minutes of reading. For each 150 minutes the students read, a colorful

America’s Boating Course America’s Boating Course will be offered this spring at the Long Island Yacht Club, 307 Little East Neck Road in Babylon, beginning weekly on Saturday, April 5th, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., by the United States Power Squadron – America’s Boating Club. Pre-registration for the first 40 students will be online at: www.gsbps.org and link to “GSB Public Course Schedule.” In person registration will take place from 9:30 to 10 a.m. on the first day of the course at the Long Island Yacht Club. America’s Boating Course for adults and young boaters (from 10

years old and up) will meet on the following dates: April 5th and April 12th – covering the following topics: You Are The Skipper – What Would You Do?, Boat Terms And Types, Aids To Navigation, Boat Handling, Navigational Rules, Adverse Conditions And Emergencies, U.S. And New York State Regulations, Boat Trailering and Personal Water Craft. Plotting class on April 19th is optional. The benefits of taking this course are as follows: • Provides you the knowledge to be a better and safe boater for you, your boating
