abylon Elementary School students celebrated the first 100 days of school through a series of fun and creative activities. Many dressed as though they were 100 years old and completed mathematical activities surrounding the number of the day, including making necklaces out of 100 Fruit Loops, counting to 100 using different increments and making special projects using 100 of the same item.

This year’s Long Island Builder’s Institute Builders Expo will truly be a home show. The show, the only expo on Long Island that attracts the pros, this year will feature some of Long Island’s biggest homebuilders who will exhibit their newest projects – both for sale and rentals. The show takes place March 26th, from 3 to 8 p.m. at the Hilton Long Island, 598 Broadhollow Rd., Melville. Sponsored by the Islandia-based Long Island Builders Institute’s (LIBI), the show is open to the public and the trade. Admission is free to the show and for five public seminars. This year marks the show’s 24th year. A seminar on energy efficiency envelopes for building and real estate industry professionals offering CEU credits is limited to the trade and will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The cost of this seminar is $40, which includes lunch. “This year’s expo is designed to introduce residents of Long Island to our local homebuilding and contracting community in a manner that will strengthen confidence in working relationships and in knowing the best contractors on Long Island are the ones who are on the job,” said Lois, Fricke, director of operations at LIBI, the region’s homebuilders trade group. Among the developers offering the public a first chance to see their new projects are Avalon Bay Communities, which has apartment communities under development is several Long Island communities; Engel Burman Group, which is planning a 55-plus community in Seaford and new assisted living facilities in Lake Grove and Farmingville; and

Dinner Theatre Babylon High School’s Leo Club, a part of Lions Club International, will host its annual Dinner and Theater Event on Thursday, April 3rd at 3:30 p.m. in the high school cafeteria. The event, which is complimentary for local senior citizens, will include a pasta dinner with bread, salad, beverages and dessert. Following the dinner, attendees will be treated to
a showing of the Babylon Drama Club’s production of Harvey at 5 p.m. Residents interested in attending are asked to RSVP to Susan Colletti at 631.893.7911 by Friday, March 28th. “Harvey,” the Pulitzer Prize-winning comedy by Mary Chase, opened in 1944 on Broadway and was directed by Antoinette Perry, aka the “Tony” of the Tony Awards. A film adaptation was made in
1950 starring Jimmy Stewart, who played the lead role of Elwood. In addition to the free dinner theater program for seniors, the production will be performed for ticket holders on Friday, April 4th at 8 p.m.; Saturday, April 5th at 8 p.m.; and Sunday, April 6th at 2 p.m. Tickets sold at the door are $10 for adults, $5 for students and $2 for senior citizens.

In Search Of Sunsets By: Jamie Lynn Ryan There’s a saying that goes, “Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.” The goal, as I see it, is to capture as many of these moments as possible and preserve them in your memory. For me, this process is only enhanced by my love of photography. Sure, there’s something to be said for stepping back and simply observing the events before you, minus the ever-present haze of technology and gadgets galore. However, I feel
that photos help to string together the missing pieces, forming a minidocumentary of sorts of each of our lives. One of my favorite pursuits has always been capturing the perfect sunrise or sunset, that moment when all the colors burst forth in a radiant display of supernatural glory. It is easy to miss the beauty which surrounds us on a daily basis, so caught up are we in our own virtual worlds. Around every corner, there are lines and angles and reflections of light, which produce some of the most
brilliant visuals. Flowers, butterflies, candid shots of people in their element… open your eyes and you will see photo opps everywhere. Add to that the magic of Photoshop and Instagram, and the possibilities for manipulation of an ordinary photo into a masterpiece are endless. Of course, snap a truly spectacular shot and there may be #nofilterneeded! As we gingerly take our first steps into the Spring season, take a deep breath, look around and allow yourself to be moved. And make sure you have your camera handy.

Hooray For 100 Days Babylon Elementary School students celebrated the first 100 days of school through a series of fun and creative activities. Many dressed as though they were 100 years old and
completed mathematical activities surrounding the number of the day, including making necklaces out of 100 Fruit Loops, counting to 100 using different increments
and making special projects using 100 of the same item. Branching into the arts, some students drew pictures of what they would look like at the age 100, what their favorite day
of the year has been and transformed the number 100 into different animals. To kick off the celebration, Principal Jessica Kemler shared the story “100 Hungry Ants,”
by Elinor J. Pinczes with the school. As it served as the overarching theme for this year’s celebration, 100 paper ants were hidden throughout the building leading up to the 100th
day celebration. Students who found the creative critters were charged with placing them in correct numeral order on a chart resembling a picnic blanket in the main hallway.

The Suffolk County Legislature has unanimously approved legislation to make discounted golf fees for veterans and active military personnel permanent. This resolution, sponsored by Deputy Presiding Officer Jay Schneiderman (I-Montauk), expands the pilot program which was set to expire on March 11th, 2014. In 2012, Legislator S c h n e i d e r m a n introduced legislation which established a pilot program to charge military veterans golfing fees equivalent to those paid by senior citizens. Since the implementation of this fee structure approximately 1,000 veterans or active military personnel have played a round of golf at Suffolk County courses. “Members of the military serve to protect the freedoms of this country,” says Deputy Presiding Officer Jay Schneiderman. “This is one small way we can show our appreciation to the men and women of the armed forces.” “I support Deputy Presiding Officer Schneiderman’s legislation authorizing reduced fees for our veterans at county golf courses,” said Presiding

The West Babylon School District Board of Education has appointed Dr. Yiendhy Farrelly superintendent of schools, effective January 10th, 2015. Dr. Farrelly will replace current school superintendent Anthony Cacciola, who recently announced his intention to retire. “I could not be happier with the Board’s decision to appoint Dr. Farrelly as my successor,” Mr. Cacciola remarked during the Board meeting. “She is a bright, energetic and hardworking individual and is the perfect fit for West Babylon. The district is truly fortunate to have Dr. Farrelly as its future leader.” Dr. Farrelly has served the district since 2006, first as director of student services and, since 2009, as assistant superintendent for human resources. She came to the district from the Valley Stream Central High School District, where she served as a grade 7-12 special education teacher, district CSE chairperson, head of Memorial Junior High School’s special education department and principal of Valley Stream CHSD’s summer program.
