Babylon School District has announced its valedictorian and salutatorian for the Class of 2016. With a weighted GPA of 104.45, Adam Gumbardo has been named valedictorian. Ryan Cosgro is the salutatorian for the Class of 2016 with a weighted GPA of 102.69. Aside from his scholarly achievements, Gumbardo is vice president of Student Council, and a member of Class Cabinet, Language Club, Math Team, Leo Club, SADD, Science Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society. He plays for the varsity lacrosse

team and has volunteered his time throughout his academic career as a peer tutor and mentor. Gumbardo was responsible for setting up the Seventh Grade Orientation Day for prospective new seventhgraders. Cosgro is a member of Leo Club, DECA, Class Cabinet and Student Council. He also participates in Jazz Band and plays varsity soccer. He is a recognized member of the National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, Business Honor Society and Tri-M Music Honor Society. He has been named an

“outstanding” participant at NYSSMA competitions. Cosgro volunteers at the Leo Club’s Senior Citizen Dinner and the yearly Parent Open Orientation. “These two young men are outstanding ambassadors of our school district,” said Babylon Superintendent of Schools Linda Rozzi. “We are all very proud of their academic and extracurricular accomplishments as they look forward to bright futures.” Gumbardo and Cosgro have not yet made a ﬁnal college decision.

It ﬁnally arrived, my very own upgraded home, complete with a ﬁlter, a light, a brand new silk plant, pretty gravel…everything a betta as particular as myself could possibly ask for! While not exactly a birthday present (I spied my Human hiding it under the Christmas tree a few months back), I had the pleasure of moving in just a couple weeks ago after my “one-year-in-the-bowl” festivities. I have to admit, I was a little apprehensive once I saw the setup; nothing like my tiny travel bowl, which was perfect for joining my Human and her family at the dining room table for dinner or on the coffee table for prime television viewing. No, this one-gallon estate is much better suited for its stationary spot on the kitchen counter – although I hear it can be unplugged and

relocated easily enough, you know, in case there happens to be anything good on Animal Planet. And my plant, I can’t say enough about its lengthy silk leaves, which create the perfect spot to curl up on and nap at any time of the day or night. No more frayed fins for this betta! This plant is smooth sailing, allowing me to flit to and fro and wedge myself in between its fronds without doing any further damage to my lovely physique. These days, the Human tends to feed me twice a day, once before she leaves for work in the morning and again when she returns home in the evening – just a few flakes each time (I do have to maintain my figure after all). I am having a bit of trouble navigating around the filter though, as it tends to blow my precious meal clear across the tank just as I have it within my grasp. What a workout!

I suppose that explains why I’ve been napping quite a bit more lately, either on my favorite leaf or wedged in the corner of my tank, face pressed against the glass, ﬂoating above the gravel. Plus, this new light is great for exploring when I’m home alone, doing my daily laps and combing the bottom for any rogue ﬂakes that may have escaped – exhausting stuff. When the Human says “lights out,” she means it. Bedtime for Buddy! I look forward to spending the next chapter of my life in this beautiful new environment. Thanks to those readers who continue to check in on my livelihood and compliment my columns. I’ve even been told a book deal should be forthcoming! Artistically Scientific North Babylon School District students learned about a unique process combining art and science during a visit to the factory ﬂoor of the Evans Drums Company, a division of D’Addario in Farmingdale. Thirty drummers from the Robert Moses Middle School and North Babylon High School marching bands saw step-by-step how drum heads are made in activities designed to blend the arts with science and mathematics. They observed ﬁrsthand the

custom-designed robots used to cut, share and secure the drum heads that they play each day in their classes. They also learned how shape, size and texture can affect pitch and dynamics. As they navigated the factory, students interacted with engineers, workers and musicians to further enhance their learning. “We love to bring the students such authentic and exciting STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts,

mathematics) activities because they truly engage the whole child,” said district Director of Arts Dr. Kim Lowenborg-Coyne. “When the students are this excited about learning, they achieve great things in all areas of study, not just the arts.
