On February 8th, student-members of the West Babylon Senior High School’s Leo Club and Students Against Destructive Decisions Club joined the West Babylon Main Street Organization’s Annual Community Meeting. The meeting outlined some of the organizations initiatives and discussed upcoming community events. In addition, students and community members engaged in conversations, sharing information and combining their efforts to better preserve and enhance the safety of the community. At least spring training has finally arrived, and with it the not entirely unexpected announcement

from Yankee shortstop Derek Jeter that this season will be his final year playing baseball. A class act until the end, Jeter took to his Facebook page to write a heartfelt message of thanks and appreciation to his fans, his teammates, his family and friends. He will leave the Yankees at the top of his game, a surefire first-ballot Hall of Famer with a legacy the likes of which will not be seen again. Speaking of, remember all those long lost friends you thought you would never see again? Well, thanks to social networking, virtual reunions have become fairly

common. Sure, there’s plenty of useless material to navigate through; but if you learn to utilize these sites properly, the odds of reconnecting with someone are pretty likely. Everything in moderation, right? That’s the mentality you need to adopt for spring – moderation – with diet, exercise, everything. Those bathing suits that have been cropping up in every department store? They’re not going away anytime soon. Better crawl out of that winter state of hibernation and greet the brand new season right around the corner… it’s just over the horizon, past the potholes.

Athletes from 16 junior and community college men’s and women’s basketball teams will be featured at the 2013-2014 National Junior College Athletic Association Basketball Region 15 Championships hosted by Suffolk County Community College in Selden later this month. College teams representing Division I and III men and Division III women will take to the College’s Ammerman Campus Brookhaven Gym’s hardwood from February 28th to March 2nd. Suffolk County Community College last hosted the regional championships in 1995. “This is a tremendous opportunity for local basketball fans and the community to watch talented junior college athletes in action,” said Suffolk County Community College Athletic Director and Women’s Basketball Coach Kevin Foley. “And while they’re here for the games, they can see all that Suffolk has to offer: 22 different competitive teams in 14 sports,” Foley said. Foley added that both Suffolk men’s and women’s basketball teams are competing in the tournament. “Suffolk County Community College is delighted to welcome the NJCAA Region XV Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships,” said Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun L. McKay. “Intercollegiate competition is an integral part of our educational experience and we look forward to welcoming the athletes, their coaches and familes to our College. We are also very proud to to webcast the games utilizing the expertise and talents of our Radio and Television Production Department here at the College,” McKay said. All games will be webcast via Sharks TV in association with the Radio and Television Production program of Suffolk County Community College utilizing six cameras and four replay angles.

education teachers worked on a jump roping unit and discussed the health benefits of jumping rope and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. South Bay Elementary School students played a game called Heart Healthy Relay. Teams were stationed around the perimeter of the gym. Each team had a hulahoop to signify a muscle of the body. One person per team ran to the center of the gym where there were numerous beanbags. Students ran to the middle and grabbed a beanbag that represented a molecule of oxygen and returned the oxygen to the muscle. Teachers then brainstormed bad habits and explored the ways in which they can be a deterrent to students’ heart health. The next stage of the game included bad habits that try to stop people from getting the molecule of oxygen (bean bags).

Throughout the year, students and staff of the West Babylon Union Free School District strive to be mindful of their health. Efforts have been made throughout the district to encourage this mindset. During the month of February, the focus is on heart health. On February 7th, many of the district’s staff and students wore red to raise awareness of heart disease and its impact on women. According to the American Heart Association, heart disease is the number one killer of women, killing more that all forms of cancer combined. Donations for the American Heart Association were collected throughout the district. Raffles were held and physical education classes emphasized heart healthy behaviors. Many students took part in the Jump Rope for Heart fundraiser. In the weeks leading up to Jump Rope for Heart, physical

Pancake Breakfast On Sunday, March 2nd, the 4th Annual Elizabeth Durante Memorial Pancake Breakfast will be held, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the West Islip Fire Department, located on Union Boulevard in West Islip. All proceeds will benefit the Elizabeth Durante Medical Clinic and Orphanage in a remote part of Uganda. There will be

raffles, a Chinese Auction, a 50/50 and more. There will also be free tours for children of the firehouse and the trucks. The Clinic provides free healthcare and surgery for women and children who otherwise would have no access to these medical services. The Orphanage supplies housing to 300 children. Elizabeth Durante was

on her way to Uganda in March of 2009 when she was tragically killed by a drunk driver. Her parents, Dr. Keith and his wife Kathy, have carried on the mission of the Clinic and Orphanage in Elizabeth’s memory. Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer recently joined with fellow members of the Town Board to present a check worth $64,303.50 to the Town of Babylon Fire Chiefs Association Hurricane Relief Fund for direct monetary assistance to families impacted by Superstorm Sandy.

The Town of Babylon Fire Chiefs Association Hurricane Relief Fund was founded in November of 2012 to provide assistance to those who experienced great damage to their home and property as a result of Superstorm Sandy. To date, the Fire Chiefs Association has raised thousands of dollars, including $40,000 from their 2013 “Fill the Boot” event, which featured members of nearby volunteer fire departments raising money on local roadways by encouraging those passing by to drop money into large boots.
