Athletic Association/New York State Federation Combined Winter Track and Field Championships on March 7th. She is the first female from West Babylon School District to qualify for the state finals. Brittany finished third at the Section XI State Qualifier meet at Suffolk County Community College in Brentwood on Sunday, February 8th, running a qualifying time of 41.51 seconds. She was the only sophomore to reach the finals in this event, as the rest of the competitors were upperclassmen. Brittany is the school record holder for the 300-meter dash and is also a triple jumper and the anchor of the winter

week was “persevere” – the idea of continuing to try at something, even when it seems the hardest, really seemed to appeal to the youngsters. They took part in an exercise writing and drawing pictures about a time they have had to persevere while learning or doing something and the surprising answers that came from the these young minds were inspiring indeed. Fifth graders studied the Civil Rights Movement and integral figures such as Martin Luther King, Jr. and Rosa Parks. They particularly focused on all of the positive themes that Dr. King stressed, promoting that peace and love will conquer all negativity and violence. The students wrote about their own dreams for their futures…for themselves, their family, their school and the world. They also did mini-projects on what the word “peace” means to them and ways that they feel they can promote it in their own environment. Projects, essays and artwork are on display for all students and visitors at SSCM and students came home to their families with prayers of peace for the month, something we could all use a little more of every month of the year!

I have a deeply ingrained love for music, particularly listening to new things and looking further into the artists I find interesting. Unfortunately, what I have noticed as a high school freshman is that I often struggle to find people to share discoveries with who are willing to explore new musical grounds. The general trend seems to be that young people don’t recognize music as a main focal point in their lives like past generations have. Instead, the idea of immersing oneself in this highly spiritual, universal experience is being practiced less, which is evidenced by many of my peers. On countless occasions, my parents have recounted their time in high school with stories that can all be drawn back to a mutual appreciation for music.

Although not all friendships were rooted in their love for the same bands or genres (but many were), people could always find a way to relate to one another through this medium. When people my age find themselves without something to talk about, discussion about a new favorite tune is hardly ever even considered. It is easier to simply default to social media or other means of digital distraction to break the tension. There is also an astounding lack of devotion to artists nowadays. With the advent of streaming services like Pandora and Spotify, individual songs are played on stations created by the user. Allowing unfavorable songs to be skipped and offering unlimited access to an endless list of tracks gives young people no reason to purchase a musician’s entire

album. To constantly browse through fragments of what is really a large cohesive work does a great disservice to the listener. In order to allow yourself to grow with the artist, you must see the whole picture. This develops a story that can be interpreted differently for anyone and is what should drive people to become engrossed in other similar compositions. A fast paced society is creating a youth who undervalue music and cannot fully appreciate it. We are neglecting many opportunities for expanding our knowledge of the world of music and are failing to forge lasting bonds with others within it. While this may be very disheartening, popular culture can embrace new ideas very rapidly, providing some hope for fully inviting music into our lives.

Angela’s House, a local non-profit that assists over 600 medically fragile children on Long Island. Town of Babylon Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez and Councilman Tom Donnelly recently thanked students from Robert Moses Middle School in North Babylon for their work collecting dozens of sneakers as part of Nike’s “Reuse-a-Shoe” effort, which recycles old sneakers to use for athletic surfaces across the country. The students from Mr. Christopher Brodmerkel’s Environmental Recycling Club collected old sneakers

from fellow students for one week and donated them to representatives from the Nike store in Deer Park. Deputy Supervisor Martinez and Councilman Donnelly thanked the students for their dedicated efforts and presented them with special Certificates of Appreciation. This effort was taken by the students as part of the Town of Babylon Beautification Program’s Global Youth Service Day initiative, which is

a worldwide celebration of community service and civic engagement. By taking part in this initiative, the students learned the environmental benefits of keeping sneakers out of our landfill - each sneaker takes 45 years to decompose. The students also learned that the sneakers will be recycled by Nike to manufacture basketball courts and playground surfaces for inner city kids.

Babylon High School’s Marine Science class has been using the technology resources at their fingertips as they study the basic principles of oceanography and marine biology. As part of the course, students have been learning about the community’s local marine ecosystems and conduct over 12 hands-on marine organism dissections, analyze real data and study the dynamics between humans

and marine organisms/ ecosystems. This year, they are digitalizing their work using the district’s Chromebooks and Google Classroom module. Students are learning how to document and digitize their weekly specimen dissections, collaborate with other students using shared documents and are analyzing actual marine data from scientists around the world. They are

learning how to create and upload new documents, share documents and submit their classwork online in an almost paperless environment. On Friday, January 30th, the West Babylon JHS Library was gifted with a red Lumens Document Camera. Library students are thrilled with its functionality. Basically any book or object can be

In addition to being heard on hundreds of jingles, feature films, network award shows, and sports themes Mr. Drewes is best known for his work on Broadway and for playing on the children’s educational show Sesame Street for 20 years Mr. Donohue stated that “the students had an amazing time; they played

great, and got to listen to some incredible stories. That’s what playing jazz is all about anyway, the history of jazz is almost as important as the music. Most of these stories only continue to circulate because people like Glenn pass them on. What is funny about that is that’s exactly how the music of jazz grew, by word of mouth. For me, meeting and hearing people like Glenn as a young musician inspired me to continue to work to keep America’s true art form of jazz alive and well. I am so happy and thankful that our students have been afforded the same opportunity as I was, and I can already see and hear results.”

Learning About Literacy contenders and the process for selecting the annual winner and honor books. The students then had the chance to participate in a mock selection process. They each chose two books that they thought might win and, then working in groups, reviewed more than half of the official finalists and made predictions of which book

would be awarded the medal. At the end of the unit, the classes watched the broadcast of the official announcement and many were pleasantly surprised to learn that they too chose this year’s winner, “The Adventures of Beekle: The Unimaginary Friend” or one of the six honor book recipients.

On January 14th the St. John the Baptist D.H.S. Jazz Ensemble had the great opportunity of playing with Jazz Musician Glenn Drewes. Mr. Drewes, a West Babylon native, eagerly shared his musical talent with our students. Mr. Drewes taught a master class to the students in the Jazz Ensemble led by Performing Arts Department Chair Mr. Chris Donohue. Mr. Donohue has worked together with Mr. Drewes doing clinics and workshops at Nassau Community College, Adelphi, and SUNY Purchase for their Jazz Programs. They have also have done workshops together at High Schools around Long Island

Sea Cadets Corps in Farmingdale on February 1st. The commissioning ceremony commemorated the renaming of the United States Naval Sea Cadets Corps Liberty (AGTR-5) to the CPL Kyle Carpenter Division, in honor of United States Marine Corps Medal of Honor recipient CPL Kyle Carpenter. Presiding Officer Gregory joined with CPL Carpenter, military personnel and local leaders to celebrate County Officer DuWayne Gregory commissioning ceremony at the Navy Operational Center in Presiding attended a special of the United States Naval Support Farmingdale.

CPL William Kyle Carpenter, an automatic rifleman who shielded a fellow Marine from a grenade thrown at them during a firefight in Afghanistan in 2010, received the Medal of Honor from President Obama in June 2014. “It is an honor and a privilege meeting CPL Carpenter and attending the renaming of the Sea Cadets Corps in his honor,” said Babylon Town Councilwoman Jacqueline A. Gordon. “It was important to have the cadets meet someone who
