n January 8th, 60 West Babylon Senior High School students took part in the annual DECA Regional Competition held at Suffolk County Community College. Six of those students qualified for the state competition, placing within the top 10 in their respective categories. Four students were recognized with Honorable Mentions. Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco recently announced that he has formed a Sheriff’s Office Citizens Advisory Board (SOCAB), which is a first of its kind in Suffolk County. The purpose of the SOCAB will be to collaboratively establish and implement programs that seek to resolve conflict, concerns and issues regarding the Sheriff’s Office and the community it serves. The Board will also be tasked with the establishment of sub-committees with the mission to further promote communication and understanding among various constituent groups and the Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff DeMarco called the initiative an important first step in “preserving public trust in county law enforcement,” which has been the subject of intense media scrutiny in the past year. The first meeting will be held in early February and the Board will be tasked with the following responsibilities: • Provide annual reviews
to the Sheriff concerning complaints and testimony from the community related to operations, policies and standard operating procedures of the Sheriff’s Office. • Review and comment on programs to promote, aid and encourage community input. • Review and comment on the development and operation of the Office’s law enforcement activities. • Represent the Sheriff’s Office Citizens Advisory Board at community events. • Establish regular advisory board meetings in various townships throughout the year to enable public comment. The Babylon School District offers a full-day kindergarten program for students residing within district boundaries. In order to enroll in the program for September 2014, children must be 5 years old on or before December 1st, 2014 and be registered during the open registration period. This year, residents can register their children on: Wednesday, March 5th, from 6 to 8 p.m. and Thursday, March 13th, from 9 to 11 a.m., 1 to 2:30 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at Babylon Elementary School
Two proofs of residency must be presented at registration. These include two of the following: driver’s license (with photo), updated town/ village tax bill, updated W-2 form, current lease, mortgage, etc. (No utility bills will be accepted as proof of residency.) If the license does not have a current address, an additional proof of residency (e.g., mortgage statement or copy of deed) will need to be presented. If you lease or rent and do not have an updated lease, an owner’s affidavit will need to be signed
and notarized, along with a copy of the owner’s updated tax/village utility bill. Parents must supply the district with the child’s most recent immunization record. Children must have had two MMRs and two Varivax (chicken pox) vaccinations in order to sign up for kindergarten screening. Physicals are mandatory prior to the start of kindergarten. Registration packets will be available for pickup in the elementary school office, 171 Ralph Ave., on Monday, February 24th, 2014.

The event will be held February 14th at the new Campus Center at Farmingdale State College, starting at 8:30 a.m. This year’s theme is “We Love Robotics!” All proceeds will go to benefit the Fred Breithut Scholarship. The scholarship, which was created in 2009, is awarded to an incoming Farmingdale State College student who will receive $1,000 for each semester he/she attends the college. It is a tradition for SBPLI to keep this scholarship intact due to Mr. Breithut’s love and admiration for students when he was alive. The scholarship
truly represents what Mr. Breithut supported: to further the education of the youth on Long Island. Admission is a suggested donation of $30. Other items studied and presented by the group were an analysis of current efficiencies and cost-saving measures and the feasibility of a pre-K program. Representatives from the group addressed questions such as whether the district can function with one less building and how many classrooms could be gained through a process known as compression. While these topics were addressed, it was emphasized to community members that no decisions would be made in the immediate future. The Board of Education will discuss the information presented at future meetings. “It has been a pleasure to work with the facilities study group,” remarked Superintendent of Schools Anthony Cacciola. “They are a dedicated, hardworking group of individuals and their findings provided the Board with valuable information that will be taken into consideration when planning for the district’s future.” Copies of the group’s PowerPoint presentation and the Long-Range Plan Presentation survey can be found on the district website at www.wbschools. org.

Making funeral arrangements at the time of need is one of the most difficult things you will ever have to do. In legal terms, if someone else forces you to make a decision such as this, it is called duress and the decision can be rendered null and void. But if you make such a decision on your own, unfortunately, you will have to live with it. Pre-need funeral arrangements allow individuals and families to examine their options. The opportunity to discuss with each other the type of funeral they want for each other. Although you can pay for a funeral in advance if you desire, you do not need to pay for a funeral to have the type of funeral you wish on record. Friends By: Bob Sinclair A breathtaking summer sunrise enhanced the silhouette of two couples wandering along a winding path toward a serene and deserted beach. They were captivated by the ocean’s rising tide, as the cascade of rolling waves tenderly rearranged all the sand within their reach. Caressed and warmed by the brilliance of the early morning sun, and the magic of the moment, they steal a breath of time to scratch their names in the inviting, ever-shifting sand.
Silently inhaling the wonders of nature, they slowly continue their journey along the water’s edge, their bare feet tickled by the chill of the surf randomly dancing along the shore.

Returning at sunset, serenaded by the haunting sounds of the sea, only to discover the ocean had once again somewhat magically shifted the sand, washing away most letters and scrambling the rest into one word that expresses so much more. As the water escaped back into the arms of the sea, the message left behind touched them deeply and became a lasting part of their lives, creating a special bond that never ends. Each couple had scratched their names in the sand separately, and the ocean had mysteriously erased some letters and joined others, forever engraving just one word, whispered by a gentle breeze and echoed by the ocean...
