Ms. Barrett recently transported the Lots of Love Club to Walmart so that they could purchase baby care products such as diapers and wipes to donate to Riverhead’s Life Touch, which helps single mothers. The club has also donated boxes of food to the St. Gerard food pantry in Port Jefferson, made peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for a shelter in Bay Shore, and bought school supplies for Little Flower Children and Family Services. In summary, Ms. Barrett said, “The Lots of Love Club makes the spirit of holiday giving a year round commitment.”

They have, for example sold homemade baked goods, chocolate dipped pretzels and holiday ornaments. With the proceeds, the club then purchases items to donate to a local charity. “The Lots of Love Club is incredibly dedicated and resourceful,” said Jennifer Barrett, director of therapeutic recreation at the Bove Health Center at Jefferson’s Ferry, who works with the group. “They don’t let age or ability stand in the way of contributing to those in need. They raise every dime and spread their generosity around the community.” This month, Lots of Love is selling a uniformclad snowman tree ornament to support Operation Calling Card, which distributes

So did everyone get what you wanted for Christmas this year? Aside from the pleasure of each other’s company, of course… I asked for a combination DVD/VCR player – one of those retro, bordering-onobsolete creations that I personally feel should be a staple of every household. How else can you view all those old home movies and classic Disney videos? And, in my case, about 20 years’
worth of dance recital recordings… Add to that the fact that, given the option, I would much rather watch a DVD movie rental on a flat screen TV as opposed to my computer monitor. Sure, I realize most people stream media on their laptops nowadays; but I’m not most people, and I would like to have the option of viewing movies on something larger than a smartphone. Hence, my request for this outdated piece of machinery, the gift
that keeps on giving, allowing us the pleasure of reliving those timeless memories on a larger scale. Priceless, if you ask me. So once the winter weather settles in and hibernation starts looking awfully appealing, I plan to fire up the old (new) machine and have myself a minimarathon of movies, TV series I’ve been meaning to catch up on – and of course those classic dance routines. Happy, Healthy New Year to all!

County Executive Steve Bellone was joined by Congressman-elect Lee Zeldin, Legislator Bill Lindsay III, Legislator Tom Muratore, the Suffolk County Veteran Services Agency and family members of veterans lost to post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) at the Farmingville VFW Post 400 today to announce a veteran support outreach effort in response to the rise in PTSD related suicides around the region. County officials encouraged veterans affected by PTSD to enroll in their local PFC Joseph P. Dwyer Project support groups. “There is no greater obligation we have than to make sure the men and women of our armed forces have the support and services they require when they come back home,” said County Executive Steve Bellone. “PTSD related suicide is an American tragedy and we need to do more to help our veterans work through the challenges they face.” The Joseph P. Dwyer Peer to Peer program is overseen by the Suffolk County Veteran’s Service Agency and is designed to serve veterans, active duty, reserve and National Guard troops suffering from PTSD and allows veterans the opportunity to share and discuss their issues and problems with trained veteran personnel in a secure and anonymous setting. The unique nature of the program is that veterans are serving as the facilitators of the groups which provides a comfort and familiarity level to those veterans seeking assistance. Since its inception in 2012, over 2,000 veterans have participated in the Joseph P. Dwyer Project where they share their experiences with fellow veterans and allow the healing process to begin. As part of the outreach effort, the Suffolk County Veterans Service Agency issued an informational pamphlet on the Joseph P. Dwyer Project to veteran households throughout the County. “Suffolk is home to the largest veteran population in the State of New York,
the second largest in the United States, and we need to ensure that they are taken care of each and everyday,” said Congressman-elect Lee Zeldin. “We know that holiday time is often the hardest time of the year for families who lost their sons or daughters. We will never forget their sacrifice to protect our freedom and way of life.” As State Senator, Zeldin increased funding in the 2014-2015 state budget to continue the expansion of the Joseph Dwyer Project. The additional funding and success of the program in Suffolk County has allowed the program to be instituted in 12 counties throughout the State. Joseph P. Dwyer Project meets weekly in areas throughout the County including: St. Joseph’s College in Patchogue, Beacon House in Bay Shore, Sag Harbor, The Vets Place in Yaphank, Rose Caracappa senior center in Mt. Sinai, Liberty Village in N. Amityville, Huntington YMCA in Huntington
and North Shore LIJ VA Clinic in Bay Shore. The project can be accessed by calling 631.853.8345 or by emailing vetspeertopeer@ suffolkcountyny.gov. “Having had a close cousin that suffered from PTSD, this issue is near and dear to my heart and I want to thank the Suffolk County Veterans Service Agency, the Northport VA, our local VFW’s and all organizations who help to take care of veterans,” said County Legislator Bill Lindsay III. “We see more cases during the holiday season and this outreach effort is going to come at the right time, especially considering the recent rise of PTSD related suicides.” Nancy Olsen, who has worked for over 25 years as a suicide prevention counselor at the Northport VA added, “the County and the VA share the same goal of offering help and support to any veteran who requires it. We will work our hardest to get them the help they need and deserve.

Traditions Of Three Kings Day Christmas celebrants realize that the holiday season does not end on December 26th or even January 2nd. For many people, Christmas and New Year’s Eve are merely a prelude to the real celebration to come on Three Kings Day. Three Kings Day, or Día de los Très Reyes, is celebrated on January 6th to honor the wise men who visited and brought gifts to Jesus Christ. Also known as the Epiphany,
the holiday marks the end of the Christmas season for many practicing Christians. Very little is known about the kings, or magi. These kings, who are only mentioned once in the Gospel of Matthew, are never named. The story says they hail from the “east” and are guided to the manger by a mysterious light in the sky. They begin a journey to bring gold, frankincense and myrrh
to the newborn king. Unbeknownst to many, the popular song “The 12 Days of Christmas” actually marks the 12 days following Christmas, ending on the Feast of the Epiphany, and not the 12 days preceding Christmas Day. Many traditions are associated with the Epiphany. Celebrants in Mexico serve Rosca de Reyes, an oval-shaped cake that symbolizes a crown. The cake has a
small doll inside that represents baby Jesus and the hiding of Jesus from King Herod’s troops. Herod ordered his soldiers to seek out and murder all male infants born in Bethlehem in retaliation of the prophecy that a messiah would come and become the new King of Jerusalem. Roscas can be made with dried and candied fruits to symbolize the jewels that adorn real crowns. Whoever receives the
plastic doll in his or her slice of cake is expected to throw a party on Diá de la Candelaria (Candlemas Day), which occurs each year on February 2nd. Unlike in the United States, where gifts are typically exchanged on Christmas Day, much of the Latin community exchange gifts on the eve of January 6th. Puerto Rican children have been known to gather grass or straw in shoeboxes for the kings’ horses or camels.
Some families display carvings and artwork of the three magi atop camels. Many celebrants participate in Three Kings Day parades and festivals. Family gatherings and parties that would rival other special holidays are common as well. A special meal consisting of corn tamales and hot chocolate may be served, while others may enjoy black beans, picadillo and yucca.
