ALL-STATE MUSICIANS - A total of 10 terrific West Islip High School studentmusicians were recently selected for this year’s New York State School Music Association All-State Festival. Chosen were Hallie Huners , Sophia Lopez, Jake Siffert, Kyle Tran and Karina Vartanian for the All-State Mixed Chorus; Andrew Palmer for the All-State Symphonic Band; Alexa Camillery and Lindsey Pritchard for the All-State Treble Chorus; and Matthew Cammarano and Eve Castonguay for the All-State Wind Ensemble. Although NYSSMA will not be able to assemble the All-State students in Rochester this year, they will rehearse and record a virtual All-State Concert in December. “Congratulations to these 10 accomplished musicians,” said Eric Albinder, the district’s director of art and music education. New Year’s resolutions may not have much staying power, but the tradition of making them is an enduring one that dates back thousands of years. According to History.com, ancient Babylonians are credited with being the first people to make New Year’s resolutions. During Akitu, a 12-day religious festival, the Babylonians would make promises to their gods, and these promises typically focused on being a better person in the coming year. Celebrants of the festival, which was held when crops were planted, a time that marked the beginning of a new year to individuals in certain ancient societies, would promise the gods that they would repay their debts and return any items they had borrowed in the previous year. While these promises might have been the forerunners to modern New Year’s resolutions, there is one distinct difference that separates ancient Babylonians from people in modern times. Babylonians believed keeping their word to the gods would curry favor for them in the coming year, while failure to keep their promises would do the opposite. People who make resolutions today typically do so to better themselves and do not fear reprisal

NEWS MUSICIANS START JOURNEY - West Islip’s Oquenock Elementary School recently welcomed the newest members of the school’s orchestra program. Upcoming Vote Sell West Islip School District 565 Broadhollow Road, SteTo 3 Farmingdale, New York 11735 Masera Building On Jan. 19, West Islip School District registered voters will take to the polls to cast their ballots on a special proposal to sell the Emil D. Masera property to Terwilliger & Bartone Properties LLC. The contract of sale between the District and Terwilliger & Bartone Properties LLC was adopted by the board of education this past September and the district has conducted several public meetings to discuss the details of the sale. However, for the sale to be finalized, it will require approval from the community. Polls will be open to registered voters on Tuesday, Jan. 19, from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. in the West Islip High
School gymnasium. Absentee ballots are also available for those residents who cannot vote in person. Absentee ballot applications can be obtained on the district website (http://www.wi.k12.ny.us/Assets/Printable_Forms/ ABSENTEE_BALLOT_APPLICATION_updated_12-2020. pdf?t=637425175493970000) or are available for pick up at 100 Sherman Ave., West Islip, New York. The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the
risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.
