The Christmas season officially began at Good Samaritan Hospital Nursing Home with the 5th Annual Cookies With Santa program on December 4th. All the residents and their families enjoyed crafts, cookies and hot
chocolate, with Christmas music provided by a DJ. There was also a visit from Santa with a photo opportunity for the whole family. To help make the season more meaningful, staff assists the residents in
writing out and sending their loved ones beautiful cards for Christmas. Later in the month, the recreation staff will wrap a small gift for each resident so that everyone has something to open on Christmas.

‘Tis The Season For Memories By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Christmas time is here, once again, and as we all prepare to celebrate the season with our families, friends and loved ones, I find myself reminiscing upon the many fond memories of Christmas’ past. With that sentiment in mind, some excerpts from last year’s Christmas column… As I prepare to host my very first holiday gathering in my new apartment this Christmas Eve, I cannot help but reflect upon the many wonderful memories from past celebrations, most of which took place in the comfort and warmth of Grandma and Grandpa’s house. So many years spent gathered around the big dining room table each Christmas Eve, of “helping” Grandma
bake her famous Christmas cookies (basically watching and waiting and then sneaking a couple as soon as they came out of the oven), of marveling at the gigantic Christmas tree and the beautiful decorations… of hoping that, one day, I would be lucky enough to have a house as beautiful and as full of love as Grandma and Grandpa’s. Well, my little apartment gathering may be coming together on a bit of a smaller scale, but the sentiment is the same. Any time family and loved ones get together to celebrate, memories are made – and preserved for future generations to appreciate, and add to. My only hope is that they are never lost. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to put together a project back in college for my Family
Literacy class which asked us to illustrate one family tradition through words and photographs, providing details and dialogue, recipes and anecdotes, creating a scrapbook of memories. I chose Christmas Eve and all the traditions that came with it for my family for the first 20 or so years of my life… from our traditional “table photo” taken from the top of the staircase, to my Uncle Al mixing the martinis as we arrived and, later on, after the first three or so courses of dinner, fighting with me for that last fried shrimp. How precious that project is today. By the time you read this, my little celebration will have come and gone, and with it, new memories made. Who knows, maybe one day it will become the stuff of scrapbook legend!

With the wet and windy weather last week, one would think that the students of Saints Cyril and Methodius School would be happy to remain landlubbers for the week, but how could they turn away a spectacular visit from the cast and crew of Five Towns College’s production of Disney’s The Little Mermaid Jr. Five Towns College’s Award Winning Theater Arts Division took over SSCM’s Father Behan
Hall, transforming the stage and more into an under-the-sea wonderland, including erecting a huge ship, delighting the students from Nursery on up and eliciting squeals of glee from SSCM students across the board. Students and faculty alike were thrilled to see that the part of Flounder was played by one of SSCM own grads, Michelle Rocco, who paused for a pose after final curtain cues.
