Harmony Café is a non-profit with a mission to reduce food insecurity by serving healthy, yet affordable, meals to all who walk through their door. They’re a proud member of and are based off the established nonprofit restaurant business model developed by the One World Everyone Eats Foundation. When one enters Harmony Café, they will notice there’s a suggested donation of $10, but guests have the option to pay less, pay more to pay it forward, pay nothing, or opt to volunteer at the Café in exchange for a meal - the option of earning a meal without being plagued by the stigma of a handout. This café currently offers one 2 ½ hour event (a fresh meal and entertainment)

on the second Wednesday of each month. They operate out of the VFW Hall at 32 Edwards Street in Patchogue; but with a heart full of passion and the energy of a lion, founder and director Rosemarie McCarthy has a goal to open a storefront for the Café which will operate five days a week for lunch and dinner. Volunteers are needed in the following areas: event planning; volunteer coordinating; servers and kitchen help; community outreach and fundraising. Most importantly, volunteer board members are needed. NEW EAGLE SCOUT - Town Councilman Steven J. Flotteron recently met with Eagle Scout Jake Michael Festa, to congratulate him on achieving the rank of Eagle in Boy Scout Troop 179 of West Islip. Jake planned, developed, and implemented a coat drive on behalf of Long Island Cares, in which 819 pounds (equating to over 360 coats and jackets) were secured for those in need this winter. The Councilman commended Jake at his Eagle Scout Court of Honor on behalf of Islip Town.

Pink Flags Performance Providing emotional and sonic uplift, the Vocal Motion group from West Islip High School recently performed at the West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition’s Pink Flags

of October ceremony to commemorate Breast Cancer Awareness Month. With a backdrop of hundreds of flags flying on the front lawn of Good Samaritan Hospital, the

group of talented juniors and seniors, led by choral director Christina Dimitriou, captivated the audience with versions of “New Beginnings” and “The Power of One.”

Eighth graders at Saints Cyril and Methodius School in Deer Park get ample opportunity to flex their creative muscles while developing teambuilding skills and learning to work cooperatively within a group. Mrs. Judy Keeler, veteran SSCM Middle School teacher uses a studentcentered reading strategy called Literature Circles. Mrs. Keeler introduces the concepts to the students as 7th graders and as they become more experienced in this highly interactive and collaborative method of bringing literature to life, by 8th grade, the students’ presentations gain some serious momentum. Their sometimes heated debates and active involvement in showcasing the story line for their fellow students are clear evidence of how engaged these young adults are

in the reading process, something often lacking in Middle School students today. SSCM’s Lit Circles allow young minds to think analytically about the works they are reading. Further, for these students preparing to make their way to high school within the coming year, the process also allows them to take responsibility for their own learning and take ownership of the outcomes of their study habits and collaborative work - life skills they will take with them for the long haul.

Just five days until Christmas, and I suppose I should begin my shopping soon. It’s funny, with the sole exception of Black Friday when I purchased precisely one gift - I haven’t done so much as compile a list in the days that have elapsed. Perhaps it’s because, save for the usual collection of gift cards and standard annual favorites, there is rarely an occasion when anyone can offer a suggestion of what they would like. Not that I am much better when it comes to this. Most years, a gift card is just as good as any particular object I can come up with, or maybe tickets to an upcoming concert or ballgame. Of course, there are always my two standbys - a trip to Disney World to “meet Mickey,” and a puppy. Yes, the 3 year-old child in me hasn’t quite grown

up yet. Alas, my apartment doesn’t allow for a furry fourlegged friend; besides, my little baby betta Spud would be jealous. They say people have become increasingly thoughtless in the age of technology, opting to do most of their shopping online and “mail it in” when it comes to selecting the perfect present. I, for one, still prefer to personally browse the stores, even if I have a fairly good idea of what I want to buy. Nothing quite compares to that personal touch. So why have I barely begun this process with less than a week remaining ‘til Christmas? Kicking Off the Collection In honor of Veterans’ Day, students at St. John the Baptist DHS (SJB) in West Islip kicked off a collection of various supplies for our troops overseas. The students demonstrated their pride not only by donating, but wearing all things patriotic. Donations of socks

Andrea Miller’s class at West Islip’s Beach Street Middle School recently worked on a rocket design project. The students used virtual reference sources to research the best designs for fins, nose cones and the

rocket body sections, and then created a name for their company. After they collaborated to choose the best designs, they produced a slide show with an explanation of their choices. Once the

alumni present ranging from the Class of 19762014, we were able to send 100 packages! A big thank you to all who donated and participated with special thanks to The American Legion Post 1738 and The Dennis P. Keenan Foundation.

You may not know this, but the Canine Careers students at Islip Career Center offer free dog grooming services to veterans that receive therapy dogs through the Paws of War Program.
