Did You Know? Longevity in marriage is something to be celebrated. Couples who reach fiftieth and sixtieth wedding anniversaries often commemorate those anniversaries with big parties. But there are some around the world who would consider golden anniversary celebrants to still be newlyweds. In December 2015, Karam Chand, 110, and his wife, Kartari Chand, 103, from Bradford, West Yorkshire (originally from India), celebrated their 90th wedding anniversary, becoming the world’s longest-betrothed couple. In America, John and Ann Betar, ages 104 and 100, respectively, have been married 83 years as of 2016. The couple eloped in 1932. They have been named one of America’s longest-married couples by the Worldwide Marriage Encounter.

Pankratz Wins New York Recycles Contest Again! West Islip third grader Luna Pankratz, a student at Oquenock Elementary School, recently won first place in her age category for her recycling artwork in the 17th annual New York Recycles poster contest. It was her second consecutive year winning an award for this contest.
Her artwork will be featured in the 2020 New York Recycles calendar, which is distributed statewide. Pankratz was invited by the NYSDEC to attend an awards luncheon concluding the New York State Association for Reduction, Reuse
and Recycling’s annual Recycling Conference, held at the Otesaga Resort Hotel in Cooperstown. During the luncheon, Pankratz was honored for her awardwinning entry and was invited to speak about the importance of recycling.
ANNUAL TOY DRIVE - Helping Hands in West Islip poured into the Beach Bay Community Center for hours on December 4th, bringing 1000’s of new and used gifts. Many children’s wish lists were filled before distributing toys to 15 local charities. Toys continued to be collected and additional Santa visits were made. That’s how it works, you give, they get.
