When I was little, all I ever wanted for Christmas was a puppy. Every single year, the same thing. When that didn’t happen, I switched to a trip to Disney World to “meet Mickey & Minnie Mouse.” Lofty goals for a child, to be sure… but nothing a visit to a department store Santa, list of wishes in hand, couldn’t fix. As I grew older, there were the latest Barbie dolls, electronic gadgets and toys to be had – the “fun” stuff. I remember that tinge of disappointment when I would spy shirt boxes wrapped under the tree, knowing it likely meant clothing. Yawn. How funny the way our perceptions change as we age.

Eventually, the clothes and accessories and latest trends were more appreciated, complemented with stocking stuffers of CDs and DVDs and maybe even a pair of tickets to an upcoming concert or ballgame. Then came the gift card phase, those years of wanting to head out on my own post-holiday shopping spree in lieu of putting any real thought into a Christmas wish list. And so it remains, for the most part, to this day. Aside from a few token “musthave” toy crazes that erupt each holiday season, even the children of today seem perfectly content to collect money and gift cards from their relatives and either squirrel it away or splurge on

their own special selection. Gone is the element of surprise, of wonderment, of eager anticipation of what might appear under the tree on Christmas morning. And so, too, is some of the innocence, the childish delight. How nice it would be to recapture an element of that, especially in this day and age. This Christmas, perhaps the focus should be not on what’s under the tree, but rather those around it… the true reason for the season, after all. This year, there is nothing in particular I want, other than to spend it with my loved ones and cherish the moments and the memories to be made. That’s my list, short and sweet.

and influential individuals throughout the day. “Our students walked away with valuable knowledge and are eager to share what they’ve learned with their peers at Udall,” said Pamela Diorio, Student Council co-adviser, along with Kristine Hagens. Jessica Schwartz and Tricia Mileti, the coadvisers of the Leadership Club, were both impressed and proud at how enthusiastically Udall’s young leaders embraced this chance to examine new ideas. The keynote speaker for the conference was motivational speaker and former NFL player Willie Green, a first-round draft pick of the Cleveland Browns and runner up for Rookie of the Year. In his address, Green reinforced his message that champions don’t give up, they get up. “Leadership is the ability to help people achieve things they don’t think are possible,” said Principal Daniel Marquardt. “Acceptance, positive mental attitude and adversity were just some of the valuable themes articulated throughout the conference.”

Now, my grandson with glee in those treasures does roam. My enthusiasm to lavishly decorate my home is gone. Now to the younger generation, this is meant to be done.
