Autism FYI’s workshops provide professionals, parents and community members the information needed to significantly support people on the autism spectrum in school, at work and in the community. They created this training course, which is available in person or online to anyone. In this course, you will learn:

FLOATING GARDEN STEM CHALLENGE - During their social studies lesson, fifth graders in Mrs. Kruer’s class at Oquenock Elementary School in the West Islip School District learned about the Aztecs and how they used canals that drained the lakes around the city during the rainy season. The Aztec people built floating gardens like giant rafts that were up to 300 feet long. After learning about how they constructed and maintained these gardens, the classes were challenged to create their own floating gardens. They used corks, popsicle sticks and soil to create a floating garden. The fifth graders then tested the gardens in water in the STEM lab to see if they successfully floated. In 2020, Blue Point Brewing launched the aptly coined ‘Toast Your Hero’ campaign as a way to thank frontline workers and hometown heroes at the start of the pandemic. Blue Point’s famous blue fire truck made its way throughout Long Island delivering beer and food to those nominated on social media for their acts of kindness and generosity when the community needed it most. This year, Blue Point’s giveback campaign is back and returning in a whole new way with the first annual ‘Toast Your Hero’ Hockey Classic benefiting the veterans and hometown heroes of Project9line and the Long Island Warriors. Blue Point’s hockey team, the Blue Point
Bastards, will take on local veteranled hockey program, the Long Island Warriors, for this inaugural holiday classic. The two teams will face off on Sunday, December 12th at Northwell Health Ice Center at Eisenhower Park with proceeds benefitting Project9line along with the Long Island Warriors. WEST ISLIP’S YOUNGEST WEATHER EXPERTS - Second graders at Paul J. Bellew Elementary School in the West Islip School District have been learning about clouds and storms. As part of a recent STEM lesson, the students created their own windvane to indicate the wind direction and which way the wind was blowing. After the students completed their windvanes, they went outside to test them out. Students were able to read the wind direction by using their newly designed windvane instrument. Hands-On Experiences For West Islip Virtual Enterprise Students West Islip High School students in Mrs. Macrelli’s virtual enterprise class attended a leadership conference at LIU Post. More than 100 schools from across Long Island and New York City participated in the event. To kick off the conference, students listened to a keynote speaker who talked about the qualities and attributes of leadership and how important it is to make good choices in the development of future career plans. Students attended breakout sessions and heard presentations from professors and
business professionals about the various facets of business and careers. To conclude the day, students created various presentations that were delivered to their peers. “The ability to network at this event and learn from other students to share ideas and best practices was vital to our students and ultimately their success,” said Ms. Macrelli. “I look forward to the upcoming tradeshow to see how students use what they have learned from these workshops.” In addition to this event, students can gain valuable opportunities
for themselves by being selected for internships and apprenticeships. Virtual enterprise is a new offering in the business education department that is a hands-on, Capstone course for juniors and seniors who have taken other business courses and would like to experience what it is like to create a “start-up” business. Students attend virtual and in-person tradeshows and are responsible for creating a product, marketing the product, and selling the product to other business students.
