Saint Cyril and Methodius School’s Joseph Traverso was the 2016 graduation “Class Speaker” and is currently enjoying his freshman year at St. Anthony’s H.S. in Huntington. Reminiscing over his time at SSCM from when he stepped through the doors of the school for his first day of Pre-K ten years ago, Joseph reflected upon how SSCM had prepared him, since day one, for the exciting challenges ahead at St. Anthony’s. In Joseph’s own words, “SSCM’s
teachers have taught me life skills I will never forget...even sacrificing their own after-school time to help us prepare for our high school entrance exams.” Among an impressive list of accomplishments, Joseph was recognized during SSCM graduation, for excellence in science. He received awards for Altar Service and participating in School Band. He was the recipient of the Monsignor Rooney scholarship, a Parents Association scholarship, SSCM’s Senior Club scholarship and was the winner of the SSCM 2016 Cyrilian Award. Christmas has always been one of my favorite holidays. From when I was a child, there was something about the twinkling lights, the anticipation of a first snowfall, and of course the presents under the tree that evoked just a bit of… magic, really. All these years later, some of the mystery may be gone, but the sentiment remains the same. As this particular holiday season approached, it was difficult not to let some of the melancholy feelings seep in. This has been a year of multiple losses and sadness for my family, and somehow the thought of “celebrating” seemed wrong and, well, downright impossible. How to carry on traditions when so
much has changed… For me, even the prospect of decorating, a task I had always looked forward to with great enthusiasm, had lost some of its luster. Was it appropriate? Was it worth going through all the trouble of digging out boxes, climbing stepladders and assembling a tree when my heart wasn’t truly in it? I didn’t know. As the weeks passed and Thanksgiving came and went, I needed to make a decision; and so, I reached a compromise of sorts. Having recently had the privilege to inherit some of my grandparents’ more prized Christmas decorations – including several gorgeous, hand-painted ceramic figurines made by my grandmother – I decided it would only be right to display them.
And so, I set out to find that happy medium, of honoring all the wonderful memories I had compiled from years past – but not going overboard. I chose to keep it simple… white lights in the windows, greenery outside, and special emphasis on all those holiday tokens I had acquired from Grandma and Grandpa’s house. There will be plenty of years to go all out, to deck the halls from top to bottom with flashy colored lights and six-foot trees and tinsel and holly galore. But not this year. This year, I choose to focus on family – on those who are no longer with us, and on those we are still so lucky to be celebrating with. Here’s to remembering what’s most important at this time of year, and always.

Library Gallery. A retired North Babylon School teacher, Ms. Agalbato has been drawn to the challenge and beauty of watercolor as a way to express her life-long
love for art. Some of her subjects are drawn from living on the south shore of Long Island: one piece that has garnered praise is her work “The Clammer.” This watercolor painting depicts the individualism and steadfast effort of a lone clammer, out working the bay in the cold of early Spring and is evocative of the cold, lonely, but ultimately noble, lifestyle of baymen. The exhibit will be open for viewing during regular library hours during the month of December.
