The Charity of the Month for December is: John Theissen Children’s Foundation www.jtcf.org
John Theissen Children’s Foundation began after their Executive Director & Founder, John Theissen, had stayed at Schneider’s Children’s Hospital in New Hyde Park when he was 17 years old. John needed to have brain surgery for a brain tumor that he unfortunately developed. The day he walked into the hospital he met a 7 year old girl named Tasha. She spent many hours with John for the next few days, always trying to make him happy. Tasha received very little family support, however she expected her family to attend a holiday party that was sponsored by the hospital staff. Unfortunately they did not attend. John was too ill to take her, so his family did. When Santa asked her what she had wanted she replied, “I would like a teddy bear for my friend upstairs.” John felt fortunate to be that friend. Tasha’s positive attitude and generous spirit inspired John. Once he got out of the hospital he wanted to help children just like her. In 1992, John held a toy drive during the holiday season to benefit children in local hospitals. During this first drive, he collected over 800 new toys in just 2 weeks! That was

Holiday Season Helping Sick & Underprivileged Children! the beginning of what has become the year round organization, John Theissen Children’s Foundation. Since 1992, this organization has collected over 1 million new toys and have donated them to sick and underpriviledged children in over 180 hospitals and child-care facilities. However, this Foundation does more than just collect and distribute toys. They also provide hospitals and childcare facilities with therapeutic and recreational equipment, support families with financial assistance to defray medical expenses, fulfill patient’s wishlists throughout the year (for those 18 years of age and younger) and they assist sick and underpriviledged children in other ways that are needed. On December 5th at 6:30PM, John Theissen Children’s Foundation will be hosting A Night of Champions Holiday Gala! This Gala will feature one of New York’s biggest and best live auctions, great raffles, door prizes, gourmet dishes provided by 2nd Street Gourmet, desserts provided by Francesco’s Bakery and a VIP Lounge Meet & Greet with celebrity professional athletes. Admission is $50 and VIP admission is $350. To purchase a ticket, please visit

The West Islip School District again broke the record for the highest attendance at the Suffolk County Music Educators Association’s annual Day of Tuba, sending 32 students from grades 5-12 to participate in rehearsals, clinics and a massed ensemble. Several West Islip students were also selected to perform in the event’s All-Star ensemble.
Held at Central Islip High School, the event featured several hundred tuba and euphonium players from across the county. Sal Messina
January 17, 1943 - November 26, 2019 Salvatore Messina, of West Islip, passed away November 26, 2019. He was 76. Sal was born in New York City on January 17, 1943, to Vincent & Frances (nee D’Angelo) Messina. Sal owned & operated The Fruit Tree in Copiague from 1970 until he sold it in 2011. Throughout this time Sal also had stores in Massapequa, Lindenhurst and Florida. Everyone in the community knew Sal and enjoyed seeing and talking to him as he walked through the store greeting customers by their names. He was always there to help people in the community when they needed anything. Sal grew up in the produce business with his family in Manhattan. He learned at a young age that outstanding customer service along with quality products is the key to success. His family was a tremendous influence on him throughout his career. On May 18, 1996, he married his beloved wife Angela (nee Antonacci). In addition to his wife, Angela, he is survived by his cherished twin daughters, Francesca Messina & Arianna Messina. Sal is the dear brother of Francine Messina Rizzo, as well as the late, Peter Messina, Catherine Messina, Josephine Messina Troyano. He is also survived by his loving granddaughter, Mia, his daughter in law, Jennifer and nephews and nieces, Vincent, Debbie, Susan Messina, John, Marc, Dawn, Vincent and Joanna Troyano, Michelle Street, Salvatore, Robert & Jamie Rizzo. I was lucky enough to know Sal for over 35 years. I was always amazed at his ability to keep everything under control no matter what was going on. I looked foward to working with him each week. He was much more than a customer. He was a friend, and I will miss him.

Musicians Attend PEAK Fest Guided by music teacher Karen IsaksenTaylor, fourth graders George Elasmar, Lauren Gallagher and Benjamin Miale from West Islip’s Manetuck Elementary School recently attended the 11th annual SCMEA Parents, Educators and Kids Festival. The PEAK Festival is dedicated to fourth grade students learning
and experiencing music, culminating with a sharing session performance, and does not require students to prepare music beforehand. Parents, music educators and the students are all invited to attend morning workshops in different areas of music, including ukulele, singing games, musical theater, folk dance, Orff orchestrations, and aboriginal songs and
chorus. This provides the students with a unique musical experience and gives educators the chance to bring some new ideas back to the classroom. PEAK’s clinicians expertly guide the sessions toward both instructing the students and explaining the methodologies and teaching techniques, thus including parents in the learning process.

Powering Up With UNICEF Students in Justin DeMaio’s and Marie Lucie’s classrooms at West Islip’s Bayview Elementary School have been participating in UNICEF Kid Power Up, giving them the power to save lives and make a local impact. The students take short
brain breaks periodically throughout the week to dance while watching videos created by UNICEF, earning valuable “Kid Power Coins” that can be given back to local causes in the Kid Power Exchange. The students decide how to help communities through
such options as supporting food banks, tree planting or health supply deliveries. “When students make an impact globally and locally, they realize they have the power to make a difference,” said DeMaio.

Triglia Earns County Title And Bronze At States
Junior and county champ Jacqueline Triglia continues to rewrite the West Islip High School swimming record book. She recently competed in the state swimming and diving championship, held Nov. 21-22 at Ithaca College, taking bronze in the 100-yard butterfly with
an impressive time of 55.91 seconds, breaking a school record. Triglia also broke the West Islip backstroke record in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 59.11 seconds. Triglia had previously been crowned Suffolk champion in the 100-yard butterfly for the second
year in a row; her time of 57.11 was the best in the county. During this season, she also broke three West Islip school records in the 200-meter individual medley, 100yard backstroke and 100-meter butterfly.
