Eight for the Environment Eight West Islip High School students – seniors Alyssa Bove and Matthew Mastroianni; juniors Sarah Koffsky, Emily Lavacca, Rumiya Malik and Kaitlyn Spence; and sophomores Greg Bove and Thomas Landhauser – were recently recognized in the annual Keep Islip Clean Junior Commissioner induction ceremony held at Islip Town Hall. In addition to the students, KIC officers, parents and school officials
in attendance, guests at the October 13th event included Supervisor Angie Carpenter and other Town of Islip officials. Hailing from school districts across the Town of Islip, the KIC’s junior commissioners are recommended by their school principals as having demonstrated environmental concern as well as social, civic and academic responsibility. “I look forward to another rewarding year of
working with West Islip’s junior commissioners,” said Keep Islip Clean Executive Director Nancy Cochran. “Many adults could learn from the example they set in caring about their community and the environment. I have already worked with many of these students on other KIC projects, and know they’ll really shine this year. Dr. Bridgeman has sent me another good group!”

Mentors Show Heart For the 46 active members of West Islip Students with HEARTT, creating solid, helpful mentor/buddy relationships is the perfect complement to the group’s collaborative participation in monthly awareness campaigns for different local and national organizations. The new communitybased organization began last year when English teacher Virginia Scudder received a PAWS grant to start a mentoring program at West Islip. “I actually started the program myself, after my students asked why I always volunteer and talk
about mentoring,” said Scudder. “They wanted me to start something in the community, with their help, and I did. Students with HEARTT is is not a club, but rather an opportunity for children and community members alike from high school and even middle school to be part of something much bigger than simply volunteer work.” Last summer, the HEARTT group was recognized at Bethpage Ballpark for their awareness efforts on behalf of the Ride for Life Foundation. Since the beginning of the school year, these
committed mentors and their “buddies” have participated in several activities including an Alzheimer’s disease awareness walk at Belmont Lake, a fundraiser for Paws Unite People Animal Rescue, wearing pink during October for Breast Cancer awareness and the October 22nd Country Fall Showdown to benefit Angela’s House. “This new program has shown its benefits to all the mentored students, who look forward to seeing their buddies and being active members of the school,” said Scudder. “There is a real cross-curricular benefit to the group.”

Reason for the Season Tradition: the transmission of customs or beliefs from generation to generation, or the fact of being passed on in this way. And so closes another Thanksgiving, filled with family, food and fond memories sure to be reflected upon in the coming years. By the time you read this, most of society will have already moved on to Christmas shopping and decorating and planning their next round of feasting and festivities. For me, as the clock strikes midnight, signaling the dawn of “Black Friday” and the close of autumnal activities, once and for all, I choose to savor this particular occasion just a bit longer. The essence of Thanksgiving is, after all, the true spirit of any holiday season
– or at least it should be. Too often, we become so caught up in the commercial clichés that we fail to truly appreciate these special moments. Just earlier today, as my own family reminisced upon occasions gone by, the recurring theme was family, friends and loved ones. The cast of characters may change from year to year, but the sentiment remains the same. While every holiday may not unfold perfectly from beginning to end – despite the “flawless” façade portrayed by most peoples’ Instagram and Facebook posts – they each hold their own place in the grand scheme of life. Time, and tradition, marches on, whether we like it or not. How we choose to spend that time will dictate the memories we make along the way and the fondness

On Tuesday, October 27th, 2015, I was a witness to history. Fairfield School turned 90 and I was there! Our school was once called Massapequa Avenue School. Some of the things I learned about school in the early days was that if you looked outside, you would see the people playing polo. Polo is when you are on a horse and you have a certain type of stick and a wooden ball. Also, if you want to play baseball at recess, you have to be picked to play. Sometimes, you do not get picked or there is no room
for the kids to play. The invention that inspired me the most was the Band-Aid, which was made by Earle Dickson. He made the Band-Aid in the 1920’s in Highland Park, New Jersey. It is important because there would be a lot of people with cuts if not for him. It happened when Earle Dickson placed gauck on his wife’s cuts and they got better. I can relate to the Band-Aid because I always get hurt. The event the inspired me the most was 90’s Jazz. This took place in New Orleans, Louisiana. It is important
because, without 90’s Jazz, there would be no Jazz music today. It happened when the military people came back and they “wanted life to be light and happy.” I am connected to 90’s Jazz because I play the flute. I love Jazz, and my nana was born in the 1920’s and she loved Jazz. As you can see, the 1920’s was an inspiring time because they gave us a lot of new inventions, like eskimo pie, the traffic light, the jukebox and the bulldozer. We still use and eat these inventions today. So what inspires you about the 1920’s?

In recognition of October as National Fire Prevention month, community firefighters from the West Islip Fire Department visited Paul J. Bellew Elementary School to share and discuss important safety information with the students, including family preparation for fire emergencies, home fire
escape plans and changing smoke alarm batteries every year. The fire department representatives also reviewed such fire survival concepts as “stop, drop and roll” and “stay low and go.” After the assembly, the students had an opportunity to climb onto the fire trucks and check out the equipment.
