11th Annual Monday Night Party Event to Benefit Life’s WORC, The Family Center for Autism and Ellie’s Army by Victoria’s side since - a longstanding friend and supporter. It was a visit by Geraldo, his wife Erica Levy, and Victoria to Bill O’Reilly’s home in Montauk where Bill learned more about Life’s WORC. Over lunch, Victoria and Geraldo shared the history of Life’s WORC and the amazing progress it has made over the past five decades. Talk turned to the organization’s 50th anniversary celebration, during which Victoria, Geraldo and Bill will all be honored. That led to Geraldo announcing his $50,000 donation, which Bill then matched. Sean Hannity, who had just hosted Geraldo and Erica at his East End Long Island home the previous night, made it a triumvirate and together, the “Three Musketeers” as Victoria fondly referred to them, helped create a new legacy fund for Life’s WORC. Victoria noted that the three broadcasters were all brought up on Long Island and they are supporting a cause in their own backyard adding that, “Life’s WORC is an organization that helps more than 1,000 people with developmental disabilities and on the autism spectrum in warm, loving group homes and day programs supporting them and their families.” More About Life’s WORC Life’s WORC was

founded 50 years ago after the closing of Willowbrook State School back in the early 1970s. As a young reporter, Geraldo Rivera exposed the deplorable conditions that existed within the then largest institution in the nation serving children with developmental disabilities. Rivera first learned about these conditions from Life’s WORC founder Victoria Schneps Yunis. Her daughter, Lara, diagnosed at an early age with severe brain damage, was a resident at Willowbrook. When cuts in state funding caused the institution to fall into extensive disrepair, Schneps Yunis, along with other concerned individuals, picketed to fight for the rights of Willowbrook’s more than 5,000 residents. Rivera’s report, which earned him a Peabody Award, ultimately forced the closing of Willowbrook. Schneps Yunis started Life’s WORC and opened its first home in Little Neck, Queens. Its first residents were former Willowbrook residents. Today, Life’s WORC provides beautiful homes located across the region, from Nassau and Suffolk to Queens and Manhattan, in addition to community services, financial and trust services, and the programs and services of its Family Center for Autism.

WEST ISLIP STUDENT-MUSICIANS SHINE AT DAY OF TUBA - West Islip School District had the highest participation at the Suffolk County Music Educators Association annual Day of Tuba. This event, which has taken place for the past 40 years, featured approximately 100 tuba and euphonium players from Suffolk County. West Islip had 18 students participating from grades 5-12. Besides being wellknown news broadcasters, Geraldo Rivera, Bill O’Reilly and Sean Hannity also have a deep respect for, and willingness to help Life’s WORC (www. lifesworc.org), a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and autism through its residential, community and trust services. The organization, which this year is celebrating its 50th anniversary, recently received $50,000 each from these prominent media professionals. According to Victoria Schneps-Yunis, it was Geraldo Rivera, who made the first contribution. It was Geraldo’s riveting investigative report in the early 1970s, which exposed the atrocities of Willowbrook State School, then the largest institution in the nation serving children with developmental disabilities. Victoria’s daughter was a resident there and she had long been fighting for better conditions. Geraldo’s report, which won him a Peabody Award, and Victoria’s fervent advocacy, ultimately led to Willowbrook’s closing. Christmas Masses and Ornament Blessings Returning to Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island has announced the return of its annual in-person Christmas Ornament Masses at – Cemetery of the Holy Rood in Westbury, Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Coram and Queen of All Saints Cemetery in Central Islip. Masses will be held simultaneously at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, December 4. Christmas Ornament Masses are a tradition that Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island has offered families for decades. These Masses were cancelled last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This year, hundreds are expected to take part in Masses or at special, smaller Ornament Blessing Prayer Services offered conveniently during the week. Blessing services will take place at the following dates: Holy Rood: Wednesday through Friday, December 1st – 3rd, and Monday and Tuesday, December 6th – 7th; Holy Sepulchure: Wednesday through Friday, December 1st – 3rd; and Queen of All Saints: Monday and Tuesday, December 6th – 7th. Families will attend services and bring their favorite or special Christmas ornaments that they will hang on chapel Christmas Trees as tributes to family members who have passed on. Many ornaments are handmade and others include photos of loved ones. Autism FYI www.autismfyi.org Autism FYI (AFYI) is a 501c3 nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting a safe environment, employment opportunities and independence for those on the Autism Spectrum. They recently opened their first office in the New York area in Wantagh. They are honored and delighted to have this new office and team to serve the New York Autism community for years to come!

The ability of e m e r g e n c y responders to recognize the need for special approaches and considerations is hampered by the lack of physical indicators of Autism. This non-proﬁt has created the ﬁrst membership safety program, IRIS (Immediate Recognition Increases Safety) that is designed to help emergency responders recognize and react appropriately to those with Autism. It also allows the emergency responders to be provided with information immediately through picture ID cards with pertinent information about a person, as well as USB bracelets, clothing and patches with an alert logo. Additionally, a 24 hour hot-line is available to help provide that emergency information as well as contact member’s emergency contacts. TOGETHER ON THIS JOURNEY FROM THE BEGINNING TO THE END - Dean Festa, Conner Howell, and Matthew Scheid all joined the Cub Scouts together in elementary school. They were in the same Cub Scout Den together in West Islip‘s Pack 279. They then bridged over into the same Boy Scout Troop together, West Islip’s Troop 179. And then all three of them accomplished their goal and made Eagle Scout all within a week of each other. Dean installed a new automatic operated security door to the convent at Our Lady of Lourdes Church to be used in tandem with an existing ramp making it easier for wheelchair accessibility, Conner refurbished an outdoor classroom gazebo, rebuilt two planter benches, and also redid signposts for the Suffolk County Farm in Yaphank, while Matthew built a stone pathway to the Vietnam Memorial at the West Islip High School. State Parks Announces Hunting Schedules For 2021/2022 The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation announced that hunting will be permitted within specific areas of select Long Island State Parks for the upcoming hunting season. H u n t i n g regulations in state parks are developed in cooperation with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), which establishes hunting seasons throughout the state. In addition to statewide hunting rules, special restrictions are in effect in state parks to protect visitors and to address wildlife

management goals for each park. Hunters are advised to check with the state park regional office and with the local DEC wildlife management office for specific information.
