Join us as we trace the history of the circus from the days of the Greeks & Romans to the present. The circus is a world within a world filled with acrobats, clowns, tightrope walkers, aerialists, outrageous sideshows, and more. On our journey we’ll meet two of A m e r i c a ’s greatest showmen, P.T. Barnum and John Ringling, who created the golden age of American circuses. We will also consider ethical issues surrounding the use of animals in modern circuses.

I used to love decorating for the holidays. Each year, I couldn’t wait for the lights to go up in my neighborhood, the house to smell like pine needles and all the cherished knick knacks to find their way to the shelves. That was, until I began accumulating more decorations than my own little apartment could handle. To say my closets resemble something out of an episode of Hoarders would be overly dramatic; however, the fact that my coat closet no longer accommodates clothing of any kind, but rather, a fairly hefty collection of boxes piled nearly to the ceiling, tends to give me pause. In order to sort through what belongs to Christmas, specifically, it is now necessary to remove nearly all of these containers, briefly peek inside, and then continue to dig. To be fair, these are not all my decorations. Not quite. Once my grandfather passed away and we began the painstaking process
of cleaning out the house my grandparents had called home for nearly 60 years, I acquired several boxes of cherished holiday possessions to add to my already-growing collection. Don’t get me wrong: to the outside observer, it probably doesn’t look like much. And, for the remainder of the year, the vast majority of lights and garlands and greens are out of sight. Only I know what lurks behind those closet doors. (And now, you, dear readers.) It is only once the last of the Thanksgiving leftovers has been packed away in the fridge and the sounds of Christmas carols have invaded the airwaves that my mind turns to the menagerie that lies within. Usually, it is a two-week ordeal; one for the random figurines and wreaths, accents and novelties - and the other, for the tree, my skinny, sixfoot tall “apartment tree” that comes neatly folded in a box, possibly the most compact of

all my original purchases. Last year, I kept the decorations fairly low-key, favoring instead only the most special of my grandparents’ holiday mementos, a few white lights and my very own Charlie Brown tree. This year… well, let’s just say the process may need to be expanded to three weeks. The way I see it, as long as all is completed by a week or so before Christmas Eve, there is plenty of time left to enjoy. I’ve never been part of the crowd that feels the need to put up the nativity as the last of the trick-or-treaters is leaving; nor do I rush to pack it all away before the final present has been unwrapped on Christmas morning. To each his or her own. However you choose to celebrate, whatever the extent of your decorations… as long as you enjoy them, even if no one else has occasion to see them, that is all that matters. Maureen’s Haven is currently in need of various donations and volunteers. As far as donations, they need the following: latex gloves, cleaning supplies, garbage bags, toilet paper, paper towels, coffee/tea keurig pods, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and of course monetary donations.
They are also in need of people to volunteer their time in the following areas at their day center: assisting in organizing their donation room, building shelves in
the donation room, assisting with office work duties, and assisting with cleaning up the day center. They also need men to serve as overnight staff to watch over the homeless on Monday nights at Aquebogue’s Our Redeemer Church. Unlikely Alliance In an unlikely but successful pairing of modern and historic, West Islip High School’s robotics team recently volunteered at the colonial-themed Fall Festival at Sagtikos Manor. Participating were John Barrett, Machlin Fellman, Tyler Foran, Hunter Hallahan, Alex Holder, Jack Langhorn, Jake Maresca, Frank Pace, Thomas Parson, Aiden Pecorale, Joe Perrone, Nicholas Rodriguez, Andrew Spiratos and Angelo Spiratos.
As the event began on the great lawn of Sagtikos Manor, the bucolic setting revealed the bright blue shirts of the robotics team interspersed among old-time artisans such as quilters, broom-makers and metalsmiths. Prior to the weekend, team members had helped bring tables up from the basement and dig holes to install lawn ornaments. The students had arrived early to set up tables, stands and the pumpkin patch and ready the grounds for
the festival. Top Notch For the grand opening of a new auditorium, West Islip’s Paul J. Bellew Elementary School recently held a celebration that included a ribboncutting ceremony as well as performances by Bellew’s chorus, orchestra and band. With the support of West Islip’s school community, work on the new auditorium was part of the district’s 2015 capital
project bond referendum. It was coordinated by James Bosse, director of buildings and grounds. Billy DeWitt, a fourthgrader in Bellew’s Leadership Club, wrote an expression of thanks complimenting the auditorium’s new “velvetlike seats, architecture and shiny walls” – and presented it on stage to Superintendent Bernadette Burns, Board of
Education President Steve Gellar and Vice President Annmarie LaRosa and the entire student body. At the ceremony’s conclusion, students brought out handmade letter signs spelling out “Thank You.” “We are very fortunate to be a part of a school district that recognizes the importance of providing students with top-notch facilities,” said Principal Rhonda Pratt.

The West Islip High School Science Department hosted a Community Planetarium Show on October 26th, giving the approximately 60 children and adults in attendance a chance to learn more about night sky via a presentation by earth science and astronomy teacher Thomas Vitti. The event was held in the high school’s planetarium, which has been in operation since the 1960s. Vitti began
the evening with a video that gave the audience an insight into our place in the universe. He then used the Starball projector to take everyone on a tour of West Islip’s night sky. A fan of “Clash of the Titans,” Vitti showed how the zodiac constellations relate to the story of Perseus, while pointing out various important stars, galaxies and nebulae that were also visible. “Tom’s planning and preparation was the
reason for the night’s success,” said Brian Taylor, the district’s director of science and engineering technology. “His star show showcased his passion and personality.” Luckily, the weather cooperated and Vitti and his audience concluded the night in the parking lot as he identified some of the objects in the night sky that were shown in the planetarium.

The Helping Hands in West Islip collected Thanksgiving donations for local families, as usual. This year, in an effort to raise awareness among the Helping Hands children about the importance of the flag and veterans, Helping Hands expanded its mission to encourage Billy Richards, proud marine and army veteran, on his journeys to Washington D.C., Texas and other Long Islandarea marathons, where he will be proudly running
with the American flag, a 45-pound sack of food donated by Helping Hands kids, and a smile knowing Boots on the Ground Ronkonkoma will get some of the attention it needs and deserves for America’s most loved heroes. Robert, Jennifer, Jodie and Jannah Gallozzi also took a tour of “BOOTS” while they shared much needed donations of socks, underwear and food. As a special treat, Helping Hands kids made small holiday crafts, decorated
bags and baked homemade treats for the veterans.
