… we spend enough of our days consumed by outside issues beyond our control. We deserve this brief reprieve from the madness, don’t we? No time like the present to savor the moment and enjoy all of life’s blessings. And, for me, this holiday season will be a year of firsts: First Christmas in my new apartment. First opportunity to decorate and put up my very own tree. First chance to perhaps host a gathering

Perhaps not. We wouldn’t want to be too ambitious! But still, the season will be exciting. It is a time for establishing new traditions and carrying on old ones. For reconnecting with those we have lost touch with over the last year. For spending quality time with those who mean the most. It is time, time we cannot get enough of. However you choose to spend it, may you enjoy it wholeheartedly.

In observance of National Teen Personal Safety Awareness Week, the Town of Islip Youth Bureau is helping to spread the word about the dangers of texting while driving, an epidemic that is rapidly spreading across America. Motor vehicle crashes are the leading killer of teens in New York State and texting and distracted driving is a factor in 8 out of 10 accidents. The Islip Youth Bureau is distributing Wrist Band/Phone Guards empowering High School students to be safe TEXT FREE DRIVERS. “Motor vehicle accidents are the leading killer among teenagers

in New York State,” noted Councilman Anthony Senft, Jr. “And texting and driving is a significant factor in 8 out 10 accidents. We commend high school students who realize and appreciate the serious consequences of texting and driving. Texting and driving is dangerous to everyone in the car and everyone else on the road.” High School students will be able to get free “DNT TXT N DRV” wrist band/phone guards at their

driving ends and ruins lives EVERYDAY! Islip Fire Department at 309 Union Boulevard, for distribution to local charities and needy families. Everyone is welcome to stay to help wrap (please bring your own scissors and tape). Having the

drive after school allows children to see firsthand how wonderful and generous our community is and Scouts, religious classes and all students who help can earn community service hours. Last year, they collected over 5,000 toys and this year the need is so much greater. As yours may be the one gift a child receives, we can accept only new or near-new, spotless toys and gifts such as children’s books tied together and lunch boxes or decorated lunch bags filled with assorted goodies, and cute bags of small bath and personal items and inexpensive jewelry are perfect for older youth who are often overlooked. Slippers and socks are desperately needed, and Costco movie tickets for Tanger would make it possible for some children to experience their first holiday matinee.

On Thursday, November 1th4, Mrs. Chieffo’s first grade students at Bayview participated in a project called Light Their Spirits. The project coordinators donated 20 copies of the book Rocky Spirit – the Rocky Balboa Connection to Success, by Felice Cantatore. Mrs. Chieffo’s class wrote notes in the books and drew holiday pictures for Troops in Afghanistan and Iraq to help light their spirits. The books will then be sent to our troops and are expected to arrive for the holiday season. This was a wonderful culminating activity for the class who had just learned about veterans - who they are and what they do for us and our country.
