Now that the election has come and gone, and we’ve all spent the better part of the last year weighing in with our thoughts and opinions on matters political, societal and purely personal, perhaps now is the time to take a step back and reset. Votes have been cast, ballots counted, and the country has spoken. Whether or not the outcome was to your particular liking, at this point, is, quite frankly, beside the point. The beauty of this country is that we do welcome the discourse, the open discussion of all topics, both mainstream and taboo. That said, yet another benefit to living in this nation is the

fact that democracy has sustained for nearly 250 years, in spite of those very polarizing viewpoints which have consumed our nation over the course of time. In that, there is a measure of victory, even in defeat. The debates which have been waged over the social media channels these last several months have been intense, to say the least. Families have been divided, friendships pushed to their limits, neighborhoods torn apart by protests, rallies and the like. Months of hatred and rage have been built up to the point of no return, in some cases. This is truly a shame. At no point should honest, open discussion be a negative to be avoided at all costs.

Never should disagreement dissolve into petty namecalling and insults, nor should anyone be written off for a mere difference of opinion. Uninformed ignorance? Perhaps. But not an educated analysis of the facts. And with that, we head into the next phase, the great unknown. Better that we should do this with the compassion and understanding that has made this country what it is, with a measure of respect for others, and with a sense of unity toward a common cause – the betterment of life for all those who reside here, as well as future generations to come. That, I believe, is a point we can all agree upon.

Coastal Cleanup The 2016 International Coastal Cleanup came to a successful conclusion recently, with volunteers around the world providing data on waterway litter to the Ocean Conservancy in Washington. The information compiled during this annual

environmental effort is used to identify pollution trends. Keep Islip Clean sponsored fifteen groups for the event. These volunteers gathered information about the litter they removed from marine environments,

including beaches along the south shore stretching from West Islip to Bayport, Orowoc Creek, Champlin Creek, Knapp Lake and Lake Ronkonkoma. A long and healthy life is the ultimate goal for many people. While a host of factors beyond a person’s control, such as genetics, impact how long that person lives and how susceptible to certain medical conditions he or she may be, there are many things men and women can do to improve their chances of living long, healthy lives: Keep working. While many working men and women dream of the day when they can leave the daily grind behind once and for all, they might want to think more about a second career than a long, carefree retirement. A study from British researchers published in the International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry found that each extra year that men and women work was associated with a six-week delay in the onset of dementia.

While men and women may want to retire from their professions, ﬁnding second careers or volunteering close to full-time hours may improve their long-term health and quality of life. Stay on your toes. A healthy diet is a key component of a healthy lifestyle, but diet alone is not enough to promote a long and healthy life. According to the Johns Hopkins Medicine Health Library, the risks associated with a physically inactive lifestyle are considerable. Such risks include a greater risk of developing high blood pressure and coronary heart disease and even a greater risk for certain cancers. In addition, physical inactivity can add to feelings of anxiety and depression. Inactivity tends to increase with age, so men and women aiming for

long and healthy lives should make physical activity a vital part of their daily lives. Get your whole grains. Whole grains may be another key ingredient to a long and healthy life. Numerous studies have shown that increasing whole grain consumption can help prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes. Researchers who conducted a systematic review of studies examining the link between whole grains and type 2 diabetes prevention in 2007 found that eating an extra two servings of whole grains per day decreased a person’s risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 21 percent. That’s an important ﬁnding, as additional research has found that people with diabetes have an increased risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease, a neurodegenerative

condition that can dramatically reduce quality of life. Visit your physician annually, if not more frequently. While many people, especially those who feel healthy, are hesitant to visit their physicians, doing so may just save your life. Several diseases,

including cancer and heart disease, are more effectively treated when detected early. Annual physicals and discussions with your physician may uncover a disease in its early stages when it is most treatable. Waiting until symptoms appear may not be too late to treat a condition or disease, but taking a proactive approach increases the likelihood of early detection, which increases your chances of living a long and healthy life. Healthy habits improve peoples’ quality of life while also increasing the likelihood that men and women live long, healthy and productive lives.

Be Smart About Antibiotic Use When used correctly, antibiotics and similar drugs known as antimicrobial agents can alleviate infections caused by various bacteria and some types of fungi and parasites. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that these drugs have been used successfully for the last 70 years to treat patients with infectious diseases. But antibiotics cannot treat illnesses stemming from viruses, which include most colds and the ﬂu. As effective as antibiotics can be, antibiotic resistance is a growing problem. The CDC reports that at least two million people become infected with bacteria that have become resistant to antibiotics, and roughly 23,000 people die each year as a result of these types of infections. An April 2014 report

from the World Health Organization stated, “This serious threat is no longer a prediction for the future, it is happening right now in every region of the world and has the potential to affect anyone, of any age, in any country. It is now a major threat to public health.”

strep throat, urinary tract infections or ear infections. Take a wait-and-see approach. Wait for lab results to come back for strep throat or other cultures to see if you need an antibiotic. Many viralbased illnesses will go away within two weeks’ time. Adhere to dosage guidelines. When prescribed antibiotics for an infection, take them as directed, making sure you complete the dosage cycle. Do not stop simply because you feel better. Stopping early may not be enough to effectively kill the bacteria and may contribute to resistance in the future. Antibiotic abuse and resistance are concerns that can be addressed by becoming informed and making smart medication choices.

Vision of Hope NYS Senator Phil Boyle kicks off October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month by presenting $100,000 in grants to three Suffolk County Breast Cancer Prevention organizations – First Company Pink – Got Checked?, Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition and the West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition. “I am so pleased to be able to support these wonderful organizations who commit their time, talent and energy to help women and men to combat this terrible disease,” said Senator Phil Boyle. “These grants will support important education programs to help bring awareness to possible environmental issues linked to cancer and the importance of getting checked early and often.” First Company Pink, a not for profit organization on the front line of Prevention, raises funds for life saving breast cancer research, they also promote and support education and public awareness projects. Founded in April 2010 by breast cancer survivor Donna Cioffi and later joined by Linda Bonanno, also a survivor, they felt a personal responsibility to reach women of all ages and encourage them to answer this critical question “got checked?” yes or no? While always supporting research towards a cure, today they are laser focused on educating youth about their breast cancer risks, the power of intervention and early detection. Through a fresh and current approach using tools such as music, videos and their new book “Decode Your Future,” they are able to reach a new audience of young women. “Senator Phil Boyle is the very first official that immediately grasped the urgency of implementing breast health education into schools and entrusted us with a grant to do so,” stated Donna Cioffi and Linda Bonanno, First Company Pink Co-founders. “Women

of all ages in our Country will greatly benefit from it. Thank you is not enough for a man of his caliber; instead we will let our actions speak for us!” The Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition (BBCC) is a nonprofit volunteer organization dedicated to various breast and gynecological cancer concerns. Founded in 1993, the BBCC continues to be a grass-roots organization, providing an array of patient support services, education and advocacy programs. One of their main missions at the BBCC is their “Lend a Helping Hand” program (LAHH). This program helps women and

men diagnosed with breast and gynecological cancers, while in treatment, with assistance in transportation, medical bills, whatever the primary need may be. Karen Kunkel, President of the Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition stated, “We love Senator Boyle’s passion for helping to fight the fight against breast cancer, we can really feel his true desire from within to help. It takes more than a village, sometimes it takes a township

to help our Coalition strive. Only together can we accomplish our goals.” The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition was founded in early 1992 by Lorraine Pace after she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Realizing that 20 people she knew, all of whom lived in her West Islip neighborhood, south of Montauk Highway, also had breast cancer. That spurred her crusade to call attention to breast cancer in Suffolk County and the beginning of the Breast Cancer Environmental Movement. It is their mission to promote awareness through education and community outreach. The WIBCC actively participates in local, state and federal advisory boards promoting legislation protecting women’s health. “The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition is honored to be chosen for this grant.” said Margaret Campise, President of the Coalition. “How appropriate during Breast Cancer Awareness Month that Senator Boyle bestowed this grant upon us. As so many are aware, as a non-profit, we do fundraising for awareness, programs and services that are free for anyone going through breast or gynecological cancer on Long Island. That is why receiving grants such as this are an enormous help to us; giving us the opportunity to help more and more who are going through this most difficult time of their life. Thank you Senator Boyle for always being there for us and for your continued support.” The grants were included in the New York State Budget for fiscal year 2016-2017 for projects associated with women’s health. Five talented students from West Islip High School were named AllState musicians by the New York State School Music Association and chosen to perform at the prestigious NYSSMA Winter Conference, held in December at the Eastman

Theater in Rochester. Joseph DelliGatti was selected for the All-State Symphonic Band, Lisa Esposito and Joseph Gusmano for the AllState Mixed Chorus, and Matthew Molaro and Molly Perrone were chosen as alternates.

The students, who earned their All-State status based on their performances at last year’s NYSSMA Solo Festival, will prepare for the concerts with Band Director James Krais and Chorus Director Melissa Senatore.

In a creepy creative exercise at West Islip’s Oquenock Elementary School that was perfect for Halloween week, Michelle Bonkov and Frank Sblendorio’s third-graders buddied up with Sue Cosentino’s fifth-graders for some monstrous fun with descriptive writing.

Each student drew a monster and wrote a detailed description of it. Then a third-grader and a fifth-grader partnered up. One student read their description, while the other recreated the creature based only on the description. Students then switched roles. At the

conclusion of the activity, the original drawings were compared to the recreations to see how accurately the writers described their monsters. “The more specific the details, the more alike the comparisons were,” said Principal Jack Maniscalco. “This was great fun.”

Cultural Research The first social studies research project of the school year for seventhgraders at West Islip’s Udall Road Middle School focused on Native American culture in the Americas, with students tasked with conducting in-depth research on a single item from a Native American tribe of their choice. Anne Bean, the school’s library media specialist, guided the students in the

research process, helping them ensure that their papers were presented in MLA format, including citation pages. Once research was complete, students created replicas of their selected items to enlighten the class about what they’d learned. No two students were permitted to create the same project, so the presentations were diverse, including topics like dog sleds of the
