About once a week I had to explain that Americans come from diverse backgrounds, and that I was just as much an American as any other Peace Corps volunteer,” says Neng Lee, a first-generation HmongAmerican who served as a health volunteer in the Kyrgyz Republic (Kyrgyzstan) from 2015 to 2017, and as a youth development volunteer from 2017 to 2019. Valuable Assets In other cases, a diverse background can be an advantage. “Integrating into Jamaican culture was easy due to the many similarities with my Mexican culture,” says Maria Elena Venegas Banulelos, a Spanish speaking, MexicanAmerican Peace Corps volunteer who served in Jamaica. “For instance, both Mexicans and Jamaicans are very religious, we enjoy a little spice in our food, and like to dress our best when in public. Both cultures love soccer, dancing and loud music. Also, the environments are similar in the structure of the homes and agricultural products, and both are home to the most humble people.” This sentiment is shared by other volunteers as well. “My color and my accent have not affected my volunteer work negatively,

instead this has allowed me to integrate well in my community, and people even call me ‘African,’” says Aboubakar Bodi, who was born in Togo and served in Jamaica. Bringing Skills Home Peace Corps service can be an emotionally rewarding experience and an effective way to develop the skills needed to make a difference in one’s community back home. It can also be a key stepping stone in one’s career. Volunteers serve for 27 months in education, health, agriculture and other sectors, and upon their return, they are able to usher innovative solutions to collective problems in U.S. communities. “I am very proud of having taught CPR and first aid to people in different villages in the Kyrgyz language. Probably not even realizing how courageous and strong he really was, Patrick then wrote a business plan for what became this organization (Project 9 Line), so that he could bring art and wellness programs to other veterans on Long Island who might also be struggling. Little did he know that participating in those wellness programs and helping other veterans would become his calling and passion in life. In late 2020, Donohue was sworn in as an attorney and started his own law firm focused on veterans law, specifically VA disability and discharge upgrades. To this day he still runs that firm, and he also is an

“Just a few years ago I had a tough time integrating and now I’m a productive and happy father, husband and attorney. I currently practice meditation, BJJ , yoga, play ice hockey, and I ﬂoat in a ﬂoat tank as often as I can. All of these practices are best for me as they bring me into the moment. I believe the best way to overcome trauma is to be in the moment as much as possible. In the past I have participated in many of Project 9 Line’s programs, including stand up comedy, which also helped me immensely on my journey.” Patrick still works on himself day to day, but knows that even if you face hard times, you can eventually get through them. Whether you’re a veteran wants to sign up for one to heal, learn or just to be a part of something locally, there is a spot for you to sign up for a class offered at Project 9 Line. After combat, Patrick got hit right away with some less-than-ideal feelings, such as anxiety and depression. “I was totally lost and alone and I had pushed away everybody I loved and fear ruled my life. Anxiety and depression ﬁlled my day and I never thought that I would be able to be a regular person again,” said Donohue. “I avoided everything and everybody to best protect myself from the unknown. Finally when the pain became so great I had a moment of clarity and I asked for help. I checked into the VA hospital in Northport and began the process of what ultimately turned my life around.”

Patrick Donohue is a veteran himself and has an inspiring story of his own. He served in the Army on active duty from 2008 to 2012. He was deployed to Kandahar, Afghanistan from May of 2010 to April of 2011. Later, he reenlisted into the Army reserves, which he served in from 2014 to 2016.

Science Students Conduct Hands-On Research Langone accompanied various classes to the park including students from the skills in science research and biotechnology research classes, International Baccalaureate biology and environmental systems and societies courses and the ninth grade STEM

Academy students. Working in groups, the students conducted research and participated in citizen science to monitor the health of the local ecosystem. Students conducted water quality testing, seined for fish identification and gathered other scientific data.

In collaboration with experts from the Department of Environmental Conservation, New York Parks staff, Coastal Steward Long Island and South Shore Estuary Reserve, students used

field techniques to investigate environmental and physical site characteristics. Students collected, identified and then released marine organisms to determine the biodiversity of the ecosystem. Additionally,

students analyzed water chemistry and record water quality. Data collected by students each year is publicly available and allows students to determine trends in ecosystem health.

How To Help Veterans In Need Millions of men and women serve in the military and make the sacrifices that such service requires. Risking their lives to serve their countries, veterans sometimes endure mental and physical trauma, returning home to face uphill battles as they deal with their injuries. Many veterans in need are not just in need of medical attention. Learning that their efforts and sacrifices are recognized and appreciated by the ordinary citizens they protect can make a world of difference to veterans as they recover from their injuries. Men, women and children who want to help veterans in need can do so in various ways. • Visit a veterans hospital. Contact a local veterans’ hospital to inquire about their volunteer programs. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs notes that each year more than 75,000

volunteers spend more than 11 million hours in service to America’s veterans. Visiting veterans at the hospital to hear their stories can lift their spirits and aid in their recoveries. In addition, veterans’ hospitals may have volunteer opportunities that make it easier for hospitals to operate at optimal capacity. • Help a neighbor. Unfortunately, many veterans return home with injuries that affect their ability to make it through a typical day without assistance. Disabled veterans may be unable to do their own grocery shopping or maintain their homes. If a neighbor or nearby veteran is facing such hurdles, offer to do his or her shopping or mow his or her lawn. Such tasks won’t take much time but can make a world of difference to veterans.

Such a group can make it easier to share information and arrange help for veterans in need. Many veterans return home from serving overseas in need of help. 5 Lifestyle Tips For A Healthy Fall As we dive into another unpredictable fall due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the American Heart Association, a global force for longer, healthier lives for all, urges people to take time to nurture their body and mind for better overall health. “After the past several months disrupted many of our typical routines, this fall is a great chance to reset and resume a more consistent work, school and family schedule. the Metabolic Syndrome Clinic at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and volunteer chair of the American Heart Association’s Nutrition Committee. “Routines can be a good way to provide structure and clarity during busy or stressful seasons, so scheduling in meals at home or regular exercise is not only good for physical health, but good for managing stress as well.” When it comes to mealtime, there are plenty of clever ways to add in nourishing ingredients, reminds Bridget Wojciak, director of Nutrition at Kroger Health, a national

This is why the United Service Organizations (USO) has prioritized connecting military parents with their families. One way to bring service members a reminder of home is through USO entertainment tours, the most famous tour veteran, of course, being legendary comedian Bob Hope. Hope’s legacy of service lives on today through the Bob Hope Legacy Reading Program. Bringing story time ondemand around the globe, the program connected more than 39,000 military families around the world through reading in 2019 alone. Service members

visit participating USO locations, record themselves reading their child’s favorite story and the USO ships that recording and book home to loved ones. Likewise, military kids can record themselves reading a book and share the story time memories with their parents serving overseas. Additionally, local USO reading events encourage kids to use their creativity and complete a craft that complements a story’s theme. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit and many locations had to temporarily shut their doors, this did not deter USO volunteers and staff from finding innovative ways to continue their efforts safely. USO Erbil in Iraq put their ingenuity to work and outfitted the

back of a pickup truck with a makeshift trifold to serve as a reading “room.” They then decorated the inside of the room and packed up a box of books, some props and a chair. The USO team drove the truck all around base, stopping outside popular locations as well as remote areas to reach as many service members as possible with their new, unofficial “Bob Hope on the Road” reading room.
