Urgent Call For Donors New York’s blood supply has never been lower, and New York Blood Center (NYBC) is urgently calling for donors. There has been a significant decline in regular blood donors, and the region’s supply has reached critically low levels. In order to maintain a safe blood supply, a sevenday inventory of all blood types must be continually replenished. Right now, reserves are below that
minimum. October has always been the month to recover, to take a breath and know our blood supply will rebound after the tough summer months. Unfortunately, this year, that is not the case. Our region’s blood supply has never been lower. This critical blood shortage stems from decline in donor base and increased demand for blood.
We’re hoping that you will share this urgent message to encourage folks to come out to donate. That little extra action can make the difference in the lives of the patients we fight for together. Thank you for anything that you can do to help rebuild our inventory in order to serve patients in our local hospitals!

A $5 donation enabled employees to also wear jeans to work for the day. “This is one example of the many causes our caring and giving Town employees support,” said Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter. For a short time, according to Military.com, thanks to the Uniform Holiday Bill, which in 1968 established three-day weekends for federal employees by celebrating national holidays on Mondays, Veterans Day was moved to the fourth Monday of October — the first being October 25, 1971. However, many people did not agree with this
decision, continuing to honor the holiday on the original date. In 1975, President Gerald Ford signed a new law that returned Veterans Day to November 11, beginning in 1978. Since then parades, memorial events, volunteer efforts and other celebrations revolving around veterans have been held on November 11.

Veterans Day begins with Armistice Day Veterans Day is a byproduct of the end of World War I, when Germany and the Allied Nations signed the Treaty of Versailles, formally ceasing fighting and establishing terms of peace. On November 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the signing of the treaty, the first Armistice Day events were held. Armistice Day was initially a legal holiday to honor the end of World War I only, states History.com. The United States Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance and November 11 became a national holiday starting in 1938. However, in 1954, after the country had been embroiled in both World War II and the Korean War, Congress amended the Act of 1938 by renaming the commemoration “Veterans Day” to honor veterans of all wars.

Many men and women, even those who never served in the military, are aware of post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD, a mental health problem that some people develop after experiencing or witnessing a lifethreatening event. Combat veterans are vulnerable to PTSD, and the percentage of veterans who deal with it each day is alarming. According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, as many as 20 percent of veterans who served during Operations Iraqi Freedom or Enduring Freedom have PTSD. In addition, the USDVA notes that estimates now suggest as many as 30 percent of Vietnam veterans have had PTSD in their lifetime.

LEARNING ABOUT A LIGHTHOUSE - Fourth grade classes at West Islip’s Paul J. Bellew Elementary School recently visited the historic Fire Island Lighthouse, located on the barrier beach of Fire Island. Students took a nature walk to the boathouse and lens house and learned about the vegetation native to the area. They also participated in a demonstration of the first U.S. Lifesaving Service, where they reenacted a vintage lifesaving experience. The fourth graders also had the opportunity to climb 182 steps to the top of the lighthouse tower and learn about the demanding life of a lighthouse keeper. Students in Janis Quinn’s kindergarten class at West Islip’s Oquenock Elementary School recently read the Theo LeSieg story “Ten Apples Up on Top,” in which three friends challenge each other to see who can stack the most apples on their heads without letting them fall. After hearing the story, the students competed in a STEAM challenge to see which table team could engineer the tallest tower, stacking 10 applecolored cups the highest, without letting them fall. “My teams were reminded that this was a challenge, not a race,” said Quinn. “A team could be the last to finish and still win, and that is exactly what happened.” The Green Team took the longest to stack their
cups but created a tower that was six stories tall. The Yellow Team came in second with a five-story tower, followed by the Red team with a four-story tower. The Purple Team created a three-story
tower but won a “Best Communication” award for talking to each other the most and completing their building first with full team participation.
