HUNDREDS TURN OUT - More than 350 runners and walkers took to the streets of Islip for a 5 Mile Run/5K Walk to raise money for the Islip Breast Cancer Coalition. Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter emceed the award ceremony, which included presenting a 1st Place Overall Medal to Town employee Mark Chasanoff, as well as to medal winner Town Councilwoman Mary Kate Mullen, the first female to cross the finish line. The event was sponsored by “Hope Runs Here,” and hosted by the Town of Islip and the Islip Breast Cancer Coalition. Over 75 volunteers turned out to ensure the event ran smoothly. “Today’s run/walk enables the Islip Breast Cancer Coalition to continue to provide the valuable support and outreach to those whose lives have been affected by breast cancer,” said Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter.

STEM STACKING CHALLENGE - Students in Janis Quinn’s kindergarten class at West Islip’s Oquenock Elementary School recently read the Theo LeSieg story “Ten Apples Up on Top,” in which three friends challenge each other to see who can stack the most apples on their heads without letting them fall. After hearing the story, the students competed in a STEAM challenge to see which table team could engineer the tallest tower, stacking 10 apple-colored cups the highest, without letting them fall. “My teams were reminded that this was a challenge, not a race,” said Quinn. “A team could be the last to finish and still win, and that is exactly what happened.” The Green Team took the longest to stack their cups but created a tower that was six stories tall. The Yellow Team came in second with a five-story tower, followed by the Red team with a four-story tower. The Purple Team created a three-story tower but won a “Best Communication” award for talking to each other the most and completing their building first with full team participation. Longevity in marriage is something to be celebrated. Couples who reach fiftieth and sixtieth wedding anniversaries often commemorate those anniversaries with big parties. Please honor those we have already lost from this disease by getting checked annually,” said Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer. “We’re proud to partner with the Town of Babylon and Northwell Health for ‘Pink by the Bay.’ This community-wide effort is a reminder to women and men alike to schedule their mammography. The Cemetery of Lost Souls is a grass roots organization that gears up each year to create an elaborate Haunted House on the founder’s property, located at 350 Broadway in Massapequa Park. E v e r y bit of money raised through their annual event (admission, donations, sponsorships, etc.) is given to a chosen charity. They have raised a lot of money over the years in donations alone and have donated to charities such as Autism Speaks, The Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Ronald McDonald House Charities and Long Island Cares. This year they will bring the community a new interactive experience with the second Lost Souls Walk-Thru haunt, new rooms, new scares and new thrills! The remaining events will run on October 25-26, 31 and November 1-2 from 7PM-11:30PM. The chosen charity for 2019 is Melissa’s Wish, a non-profit organization founded with the purpose of providing short term, non-medical financial aid in the form of a grant to caregivers who are assisting those afflicted with a serious illness, injury or end of life event. This homegrown haunt has been up and running for a few weeks so far this year and visitors have only good things to say! Below are some recent reviews:

Centering Fitness Islip High School’s fitness training area for athletes and physical education students has undergone a major upgrade, rebranding the space as a true fitness center and not just a weight room. “When I came here three years ago, we already had the rack system, dumbbells and pin loader machines, but the one thing the fitness center lacked was cardio equipment,” said John Sparacio, Islip’s director of health, physical education and athletics. “It was really just a weight

room, not a real fitness center.” Over the past two years, Sparacio and his team started transitioning in cardio equipment such as treadmills, recumbent bikes, advanced motion trainers, ellipticals and rowing machines. They also painted the room, brightening it and branding it with Islip’s purple and gold. Access to the room is available throughout the day as part of the curriculum for PE classes. “We are trying to meet all the needs of the

district’s high school children, providing kids of all abilities with more opportunities and options,” Sparacio said. “It is not just for athletes. We want students of all body types and abilities to find something in here that would appeal to and benefit them. They can learn different kinds of athletic plans through our physical education classes and athletic programs, whether its sports-specific or just living a healthy lifestyle.”
