LEARNING TO LAUGH - On October 8th, Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center hosted the First Annual Theresa Patnode Santmann Heart and Soul Symposium, a free seminar exploring healthy mindbody connection and its impact on chronic illness. Two hundred guests attended their choice of workshops covering aspects of mental and physical well-being. Workshops were followed by lunch and keynote presentation by healthy humorist, Brad Nieder, MD, CSP, who blends health care humor with wellness advice and an uplifting message in his “Laughter Is The Best Medicine” Presentation. Babylon resident Theresa Patnode Santmann generously underwrote the conference.

One Year Later By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Almost exactly one year ago, Long Islanders experienced what can only be described as the wrath of Mother Nature in the form of Hurricane Sandy. In the midst of power outages and damage assessment, we here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers managed to publish a newspaper, and I – displaced from my home on the south shore – attempted to compile a few thoughts in an effort to produce a column amid the chaos. Here are a few excerpts… We always think it’s not going to happen here. Whatever “it” is, we have grown so used to absently
observing most catastrophes from a distance, never foreseeing the day when they will wind up right in our own backyards. Literally. Some people lucked out. Others were not so fortunate, and will spend the next few weeks and months – years even – cleaning up all that was left behind, however little it may be. They say someone always has it worse off than you, and this is true. Except in this case, many of those most devastated happen to be our family members, friends and neighbors – the worst off of whom don’t even have a home to go back to. As with all events of this magnitude, peoples’ true colors tend to shine through, for better or worse. Here in the Long
Island/New York City area, we have witnessed a bit of both. But there are slivers of brightness struggling to shine through the chaos. Strangers banding together to organize food and clothing drives, businesses opening their doors to the public for heat, shelter, a place to charge cell phones and laptops and reconnect with the outside world… all signs that, amidst the mayhem, some basic humanity does exist. Let’s all hang in there. Together, we can – and will – get through this. And we have. Mostly. Some better than others. Still a long road to full recovery, but at least we have begun the journey.
As we head into the holiday season, it is crucial to realize just how caught up we can get in the trickor-treating, gift buying and pumpkin carving. Sure, these things are important, but the true measure of a successful holiday is the quality of the memories we create with our family. Some of my fondest memories took place around a Christmas Tree. Others derived from the carving of the turkey. More still were captured while dressed up in Halloween garb with my mom, dad and little brother. I vividly remember being carried in my father’s arms, dressed as a pumpkin, while my brother was in
his stroller, dressed as a pea! As Halloween is right around the corner, our minds shouldn’t be focused on getting to Christmas, but enjoying the ride. Each day is a blessing. Throughout my seventeen years on this Earth, I have learned many things. To me, the most important tidbit is that: “In today’s society, the family unit is broken up. When we’d sit down to dinner together as a family, we’d learn about each other. We had something people don’t get today.” This quote from Paul Prudhomme exemplifies what experts have been saying all along. The simplest social
group, the family, has been torn apart by modern happenings. In school, I take a class called Sociology, in which we learn that the most powerful group is a family. Weber, Marx and countless other sociologists have their own view on the family unit. All of them unanimously agree that, without those related to us by blood, we would be nothing. Keeping in contact with those we care about is especially crucial around the holidays. Throughout all of the gift-giving and traditions, find time to spend a moment with those you love, your family.

traveling window into the Universe will become a major resource for encouraging Long Island students to pursue careers in science,” said Bob Keller of the National Grid Foundation. “We are thrilled to be partnering with the Vanderbilt, one of Long Island’s premier museums. With their highly skilled team of educators and a stateof-the-art planetarium, we are certain that the Vanderbilt will play an even larger role in promoting student interest in science.” The program features state-ofthe-art technology, engaging professionally developed curricula, and a downloadable teacher-resource guide, Reinheimer said. Discovering the Universe will bring cutting-edge science education to students in grades 3 through 12. The program will be offered at no cost to a limited number of schools. Discovering the Universe is designed to meet New York State standards for Mathematics, Science, and Technology (MST) and directly addresses a number of the articulated MST standards. The Classroom consists of five stations: Light, Telescope, Digital Imaging, 3-D Universe, and Gravity. Each offers hands-on interactive exhibitions that engage visitors in different topics. Moving through the exhibition effectively reflects the step-by-step process by which astronomers study the Universe. Pre- and post-visit materials will be provided to classroom teachers to enhance the student learning experience. The Vanderbilt will survey participating educators to measure the success of the program. The Vanderbilt Museum and Planetarium has 100,000 annual visitors, which include more than 50,000 schoolchildren from more than 100 Long Island school districts.

The Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum will demonstrate a new mobile, science-education outreach program, Traveling Classroom: Discovering The Universe, on Wednesday, October 30th, from 3 to 4 p.m. at Oldfield Middle School in Greenlawn. Vanderbilt science educators will show Science Club members and their advisor, Drew Lockwood, how to explore astronomy with the Classroom’s five, hands-on, interactive stations. The Traveling Classroom - housed in a 37-foot customized recreational vehicle - is a gift to the Vanderbilt Museum from the American Museum of Natural History, which also developed the curriculum for the successful astronomy and astrophysics program. The Traveling Classroom is supported by a grant from the National Grid Foundation. Speakers will include Lance Reinheimer, executive director of the Vanderbilt Museum; Bob Keller, president of the National Grid Foundation; Suffolk County Legislators William “Doc” Spencer; Lou D’Amaro and Steven Stern; and State Assemblyman Andrew Raia. “At a time when many institutions have to cut programs, the Vanderbilt is pleased to be able to expand its education outreach,” Reinheimer said. “Our Traveling Classroom - and our partnership with the National Grid Foundation - will enable us to enhance the Vanderbilt’s longtime role as an adjunct to the science curriculum in local schools. 20 YEARS OF SERVICE - Suffolk County Legislator Tom Barraga had the pleasure of presenting Ocean Beach Chief of Police George B. Hesse a proclamation for his twenty years of service on the police force. Chief Hesse was first sworn in as an Ocean Beach police officer in December of 1992. He was promoted to Sergeant in 2001 and later promoted to Chief of Police in January of 2006. During his career, Chief Hesse has been commended for his heroic acts; receiving the Police Bravery Bar in 2012, and in 2013 the American Legion Medal of Heroism as well as the Suffolk County Sandy Bar for the rescue of a village worker during Super Storm Sandy.

Coastal Clean-Up
The South Shore 4H Club, in conjunction with Keep Islip Clean (KIC), participated in this year’s 28th Annual International Coastal Clean Up. The Cleanup is a global event coordinated by the American Littoral Society and the Ocean Conservancy. The 4H group of 25 members, ages 9-16, cleaned up Quintuck Creek and its surrounding waterways and marshlands in East Islip. The group coordinated 5 boats, with smaller boats run by 4H members that could access the more shallow arms of the creek. “We were extremely surprised that we collected
400 lbs of garbage. We never realized there was so much. It’s hard to believe so many boats just drive right by that much garbage everyday,” says Paul Rodriguez,4H President and Junior at St. Anthony’s High School. The South Shore 4H Club’s mission revolves around environmental stewardship and participation in this event demonstrates global, national and local environmental awareness. Nancy Cochran, Executive Director of KIC, said “This group is amazing. This was probably the best Coastal Clean Up we have ever had. You really
do not know what’s out there that’s harmful to our environment until you make an effort to clean it up.” The group filled KIC member Christian Muller’s 14 foot boat with large garbage bags, four tires and a shop vac!. Muller, 4H Treasurer and 8th grader at The Stony Brook School, commented, “It’s sad to say but we could have kept going and probably filled another boat.” The club recorded every piece of garbage and sent the data to Ocean Conservancy scientists, who track global pollution trends.

Walking For Alzheimer’s Following the success of its two previous Walks this summer, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) will have its 2nd Annual Westhampton Beach Walk for Alzheimer’s & Fall Festival on October 26th at the Village Green (intersection of Main Street and Mill Road) in Westhampton Beach. Registration begins at 8:15 a.m., followed by the
opening ceremony at 9 a.m. and the Walk at 10 a.m. Lunch and entertainment will follow afterwards at 11:45 a.m. The opening ceremony will feature entertainment by the USO Liberty Bells of New York, recognition of all participating team captains and a Hope Garden ceremony. After the Walk, participants who raise over $100 will be
treated to lunch. There is no registration fee for teams or walkers who raise donations for the Walk. For those who wish to register the day of the Walk, general admission is $25.00 for adults, $10.00 for teens, and $5.00 for children two years of age and older. Children under 2 are free. Family discount packages (two adults and two children) are available
for $30. All the proceeds will go to support ADRC’s mission to fight the dreaded disease.
