It’s been awhile since I’ve thrown together one of my random, rambling columns, touching on this, that and the other thing. Here goes… Baseball in October, that annual celebration of excellence that us Yankees fans have been fortunate to experience, well, annually for the most part. Congratulations to our New York neighbors, the Mets, for holding it together just long enough to make their longsuffering fans believe. Let’s hope the ride continues into the next round; but, either way, a proud showing. Football in October, well, that’s a different story entirely. The season is still

less than halfway over, and up until just a few weeks ago, tailgating could have been comfortably enjoyed in t-shirts and shorts. But no more. Gabriella Minicozzi, an independent Girl Scout with Service Unit 17 of West Islip, recently submitted her Gold Award project, representing the highest achievement in Girl Scouting. “Brace Yourself Breast Cancer,” involved the creation of inspirational pink bracelets. As the daughter and granddaughter of breast cancer survivors, she wanted to support breast cancer patients while raising awareness. “I am doing this project with the help of my family and friends in order to increase awareness of the disease throughout my neighborhood,” said Ms. Minicozzi. “I want to encourage people to get screened, since early detected is the best protection.” Wearing these bracelets, which are inscribed with inspirational quotes by other breast cancer survivors, gives women comfort during their recovery while reminding them that they are not alone in their fight. When they look down at their wrist, the quote of encouragement helps them stay strong. Islip celebrated the arrival of the crisp, Autumn season. Mrs. Scali’s and Mrs. Messmer’s classes participated in various hands-on, apple-themed activities. The kindergartners read stories about the legendary American pioneer Johnny Appleseed and learned how apples grow. The children sorted apples and enjoyed a taste of red, yellow and green varieties. They then selected their favorite type of apple and created a class picture graph. As the culminating event, the kindergartners enjoyed homemade applesauce!
