There are those who contend that things were far simpler before technology invaded our daily lives and made us dependent upon electronic devices glued to our hands. In some respects, yes, absolutely. But the benefits are not to be so lightly dismissed. Case in point: the recent avalanche of new smartphones which have been released. What’s the difference between one model and the next? Is it worth the money invested? In reality, not much, and no. But as a society, we have been conditioned to want the next big thing, at whatever the cost. It’s become more of a status symbol than a matter of functionality.

For me, the selling point of a smartphone, initially, was to have the ability to text using a full keyboard, rather than one button at a time, letter by tedious letter. I was extremely late to the party, in that respect, having held on to my cherished flip phone for far longer than most in my age bracket. But once I upgraded, there was no going back. Fast forward several years, and my motivation isn’t the slightly larger screen, the slightly longer battery life or a new collection of apps and emojis – it is, quite simply, the camera. My love of photography, while always a passion, has never been complemented by an equally-adequate camera. After reading the reviews of the latest iPhone, it seemed to be a no-brainer to invest

the money into a two-forone deal – a state-of-the-art phone coupled with a camera that earned the praises of numerous professional photographers. And so I took the plunge. And it was worth it. All the downfalls the previous camera had been plagued with, eliminated. Low light, zoom, clarity… now vastly improved upon. It may not seem like much to those who yearn for the simplicity of the days of the rotary phone; but, for me, it is everything. And so I embark on my next photographic pursuit, new phone/camera in hand, embracing the technology which surrounds us. Sometimes, the function does outweigh the downfall after all.

ADVENTURE PARK - Earlier in the month of September, the 8th grade students from Our Lady of Lourdes School in West Islip visited “Adventure Park” in Wheatley Heights. The students had so much fun zip lining and going through obstacle courses to get from tree to tree. Not only was the field trip a great experience, the students built a better sense of community within the class. As 8th grade students, most of them have been together since kindergarten, but this field trip was an extra way for the students to feel a sense of community and truly feel like a family.

On September 27th, Our Lady of Lourdes School in West Islip held the first Academic Olympics! Modeled on the Olympic Games, each student in grades 1-8 was assigned a team representing a specific country. Throughout the day,

the students competed in several contests as a team to reach goals and win medals for their class. The events took place for six different subjects. The Academic Olympics was meant to be a team and community-building activity where the students

Hundreds of flags are displayed on the front lawn of Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip during the annual event to commemorate Breast Cancer Awareness Month. “Our group of talented juniors and seniors captivated the emotional audience with an uplifting performance,” said Eric Albinder, the district’s director of art and music education. “It was a beautiful day that showed love and devotion to those that have been affected by breast cancer.”

Lions Roar Dark skies and drizzle did not dampen the spirit of the West Islip community during the district’s annual homecoming weekend. Prior to the varsity football game, members of each class paraded with decade-themed banners down Higbie Lane to the

high school field, following convertibles carrying homecoming king Michael D’Agostino and queen Shannon Sullivan, as well as runners-up Robert Halloran and Kate Kohler. The band, kickline team and cheerleaders also led the march as members of

the community gathered on the street in a show of support. To kick off the game, the marching band led the community in the national anthem. Although the student-musicians were unable to perform during the halftime

show due to the rain, the kickline team and cheerleaders took center stage with their talented performances. In addition, Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter was on

hand to present West Islip Touchdown Committee President Bob Cestaro, who is retiring from the booster club, a citation for his years of service. The Lions flexed their

muscles and came away with a 28-6 victory against Bellport High School, making the afternoon a homecoming to remember.

matter of seconds. Lock your vehicle at all times. One of the simplest ways to protect a vehicle from prospective thieves is to always lock the windows and doors, even when you’re inside the vehicle. Auto thieves like things to go quickly and smoothly, and locked doors and rolled up windows only complicate things for thieves. Get in the habit of locking the vehicle when you’re driving, as unlocked doors make it easier for carjackers to surprise unsuspecting motorists. Park smart. Some motorists like to park far away so their vehicles are not at risk of being dinged or scratched by inattentive drivers and passengers getting into and out of nearby vehicles. Others may simply not have the patience to find parking spots in well-lit areas close to home or storefronts. But thieves may target vehicles parked nowhere

near foot or automobile traffic. Always park in parking garages or other well-lit areas, which deter thieves from breaking in and driving away with your vehicle. Etch the VIN onto your windows. Car thieves are not in the auto theft business so they can build a fleet of stolen cars. Upon stealing a car, many car thieves head right for a chop shop, which is a place where stolen cars are disassembled and then sold for parts. By etching the VIN, or vehicle identification number, of your car or truck on your vehicle’s windshield or windows, you may be making your car less attractive to prospective thieves and the chop shops they do business with. Vehicle theft remains a problem even as technology has done much to prevent it. But drivers can take steps to reduce their risk of being victimized by car thieves.

Safely Share the Road

Motorists, motorcycle riders, cyclists, and pedestrians converge on roadways across the globe every day. While many travelers respect their fellow road warriors, the potential for highway accidents is great. Taking measures to share the road safely can greatly reduce all travelers’ risk of being involved in a traffic accident.

Bicycle helmets, motorcycle helmets and other protective gear can save lives. Everyone should wear a properly fitted helmet. Motorists and their passengers should always wear their safety belts. Obey the rules of the road. Whether on foot, on a bicycle, on a motorcycle or in a car, the rules of the road remain the same. Heed

traffic signals, yield to others when applicable and maintain proper speeds. Also, remember to use turn signals when turning and/or changing lanes. Be aware of road conditions. The NHTSA says that road conditions that are minor annoyances to motorists can pose major hazards to motorcycle riders and cyclists. Riders may change speed or adjust position within a lane suddenly in reaction to road and traffic conditions, such as potholes, gravel, wet or slippery surfaces, pavement seams, railroad crossings and grooved pavement. Drivers should anticipate such adjustments. Working in concert, everyone can improve safety for those sharing the road.

Vehicle theft is something few people imagine happening to them. Until it does. While many motorists may think technology has done wonders to curb vehicle theft, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration notes that a motor vehicle is stolen every 46 seconds in the United States.
