The Cemetery of Lost Souls is a grass roots organization that gears up each year to create an elaborate Haunted House on the founder’s property, located at 350 Broadway in Massapequa Park. E v e r y bit of money raised through their annual event (admission, donations, sponsorships, etc.) is given to a chosen charity. They rely heavily on devoted individuals and community support, as the actors and people who put on the haunt are volunteers. They have raised a lot of money over the years in donations alone and have donated to charities such as Autism Speaks, The Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Ronald McDonald House Charities and Long Island Cares. This year they will bring the community a new interactive experience with the second Lost Souls Walk-Thru haunt, new rooms, new scares and new thrills! The event will run on October 12, 18-19, 25-26, 31 and November 1-2 from 7PM-11:30PM. The chosen charity for 2019 is Melissa’s Wish, a non-profit organization founded with the purpose of providing short term, non-medical financial aid in the form of a grant to caregivers who are assisting those afflicted with a serious illness, injury or end of life event.
You can benefit Melissa’s Wish in various ways. Of course you can attend one of this year’s Haunted House events (all proceeds will benefit this organization), you can donate on their website or you can become a sponsor of their
organization. Additionally, you can become involved with the Cemetery of Lost Souls in many ways. They are actively looking for volunteers in the following areas: Digital Marketing (to help with social media marketing), Scare Team Members (actors to help put on the event), Security (watching over the event and making sure all guests are safe), Bake Team Members (to donate baked goods to sell at some of the events) and lastly, they are looking for an Electrician (to volunteer a few hours to help finalize last minute details for the event). Volunteers must be 16 years of age and volunteer time can count towards community service hours! Sponsorship opportunities are also available. This organization is looking for local businesses to sponsor the event. All sponsors will be listed on their website and will be given the opportunity to have their logo and or a small clip on a big screen at the event in front of the waiting line. This will be on a loop, so there is lots of exposure to be had! Lastly, donations are welcomed at any time on their website. Ribbon Cutting Marks Dream Come True
Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter helped make the American Dream come true for a Bay Shore couple and their four children by presenting the keys to the family’s newly constructed 1,400 sf four bedroom home on Hyde Park Ave. in Bay Shore. Mariluz and Luiz Castillo and their four children, stood on the porch of their two-story colonial during a press conference and ribbon-cutting ceremony Thursday, celebrating the moment the family took possession of their new home, made possible by the Town of Islip Community Development Agency and Suffolk County, through
the 72-H program. Under the program, the County is able to transfer vacant land to the CDA, who then builds a new, energy star home that compliments the community. The CDA provides the financing by subsidizing the purchase price through low and nointerest home mortgages, low-down payments and with no closing costs, making home buying affordable. 7 Ways Newspapers Benefit Students vocabulary. Numerous studies have found that reading can improve youngsters’ vocabulary. Each day, newspapers are filled with fresh stories that can introduce kids to new words, helping them to strengthen their vocabularies and make them more effective communicators. 2. Newspapers improve reading skills. Like the old adage says, “Practice makes perfect.” Reading newspapers each day can help kids develop their reading and comprehension skills.
3. Newspapers promote critical thinking. Newspaper reporters are trained to objectively report the news, sharing facts without allowing their own opinions to influence their stories. Educators can choose stories from the newspaper to serve as catalysts for discussions that focus not just on the facts listed in the story, but what might be behind them. Such discussions can help youngsters develop their critical thinking skills. 4. Newspapers bring ideas and current events to life. Many children are aware
of major world events, even if they don’t know or understand the details. Newspaper articles about world events can be used as avenues to discussions about what’s going on in the world. 5. Newspapers build global awareness. Customized newsfeeds funneled through social media outlets can make it hard for young people to recognize and understand the world beyond their own communities and interests. To support students and families, the College Board—the creator of the SAT and Advanced Placement—has launched a first-of-its-kind national scholarship program that serves as a simple college planning guide for all students. Opportunity Scholarships lay out six simple steps that all students can take to get into college. Completing each step will earn a chance for a scholarship; completing all six will earn students a chance to win $40,000 for their college education. These six steps help students plan by making a good starter college list, help them prepare so they can take their best shot and help them pay for college: 1. Build a College List—
Students get started by exploring colleges they’re interested in. 2. Practice for the SAT— Students use Official SAT Practice on Khan Academy to help them get ready for test day. 3. Improve SAT Scores—Students show how practice pays off by improving their SAT score. 4. Strengthen College Lists—Students make sure their college list is a mix of academic safety, fit and reach schools.
5. Complete the FAFSA— Students fill out the free government form to apply for financial aid. 6. Apply to Colleges— Students apply to the schools they want to attend. A Big Difference One thing that makes these scholarships different from other programs is that they’re about how much students grow, not how high they score. They don’t require an essay or an application and don’t
have a minimum GPA or SAT score requirement. Instead, the program rewards all students’ efforts and actions on their way to college. The more effort students put in and actions they complete, the more chances they have to earn a college scholarship. The College Board is investing $25 million over five years. A total of $5 million is available for each graduating class, beginning with the class of 2020. All students are
