TEAMS JOIN TOGETHER IN FUNDRAISING EFFORT - In remembrance of 9/11, the West Islip junior varsity and varsity girls volleyball teams coordinated a car wash to raise money for the Tunnel to Towers Foundation. The car wash raised $500, which was donated in memory of West Islip resident and NYPD officer Sgt. Terrence O’Hara. Sgt. O’Hara passed away in 2017 from cancer that developed as a result of participating in rescue and recovery efforts at the World Trade Center site following the 9/11 attacks. WEATHER DOESN’T DAMPEN FIRST DAY SPIRITS - Despite the wet weather conditions, students throughout the West Islip School District were all smiles as they entered their respective buildings for the start of the 2021-2022 schools year on Sept. 1. This year, the pre-kindergarten students are be part of a full-day program and are looking forward to their first experiences in the district. Kindergarten and first graders were accompanied off their buses and met by staff and explored their new teachers and classrooms. Sixth and ninth grade students were also welcomed into their new buildings and had the chance to get acquainted with their teachers and classmates. Keep Islip Clean International Coastal Cleanup The International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) kicked off in midSeptember and Keep Islip Clean is ready to support and supply volunteers in this unique environmental project. As the name suggests, the ICC is a global initiative designed to collect information on the trash removed during waterway cleanups. It is an initiative
of the Ocean Conservancy in Washington, which uses the data to track international marine pollution trends. An ICC cleanup requires attention to the details of trash found near beaches, streams and wetlands, but it is not a difficult task. Keep Islip Clean will provide instructions for data collection along with all necessary supplies.
