The Charity of the Month for September is: The Twilight Wish Foundation www.twilightwish.org
The Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations. Since the foundation’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued. This organization truly makes a difference in the lives of seniors nationwide. Often the elderly gets overlooked or they simply can’t seem to achieve their goals on their own. This is where Twilight Wish steps in. Judy was a local wish recipient from Kings Park. Her wish was to visit her mother in Rochester and take her to her favorite restaurant. Judy received round-trip plane tickets, a hotel stay, a car rental and a gift certificate to her mother’s favorite restaurant from this foundation! The process of applying to be a wish recipient is fairly simple. You can visit their website at www. twilightwish.org and click on the “Wishes” tab followed by “Request A Twilight Wish”. From here you can start the process. Applications can be submitted for yourself or on behalf of someone else. The foundation has a committee that meets on a monthly basis to review new applications and they determine the eligibility of the applicants and wish requests. If approved, the foundation will grant the wish as funding and resources become available (if they are not already available).

You can make an “Impact Investment” in your community by being a Twilight Wish Sponsor. Morrison Named New Assistant Superintendent The West Islip School District has named Dawn Morrison as the new assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction. She most recently served as principal of West Islip’s Manetuck Elementary School. Morrison previously worked as principal of the district’s Oquenock Elementary School and assistant principal at the district’s Beach Street Middle School. She began her career in education in 2000 as a seventh grade English teacher at Beach Street. Morrison, an Oak Beach resident, earned her bachelor’s degree in English from Salve Regina

Science Skills Get SPARKed West Islip High School science research students Evan Lam and Brett Powell participated in the Student Partnerships for Advanced Research and Knowledge program at Brookhaven National Laboratory this summer. The SPARK program enables students and teachers to collaborate
with scientists at BNL facilities such as the National Synchrotron Light Source II to conduct research using world-class tools that are otherwise unavailable for student use. The two West Islip students, both juniors, contributed to the analysis
and communication of data collected by students in the SPARK program at the NSLS-II. Using the skills and knowledge they gained during their participation, Lam and Powell are now working on a proposal for their own research.
