The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition for Long Island, Inc. (WIBCC) is a non-profit grassroots organization that was founded in 1992. They work to eradicate Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Their mission is to provide support services to women undergoing treatment and requiring postmastectomy care with their “Lead A Helping Hand” program, and to actively promote cancer and environmental awareness with education, advocacy and outreach throughout the community. To accomplish their mission, they focus on prevention, research, education, services, their Lend a Helping Hand program and awareness. WIBCC has remained open throughout the pandemic and are truly here to serve our community. This coalition serves all of Long Island, not just West Islip.

As like many other non-profit organizations, WIBCC holds various fundraising events throughout the year to gain awareness and collect funds in support of their mission. This September they are part of Stop & Shop’s Community Bag Program. WIBCC will receive a $1 donation every time a $2.50 reusable Community Bag is purchased at 400 Union Blvd in West Islip, unless otherwise directed by the customer through the Giving Tag attached to the bag. Additionally, they are participating in John’s Crazy Socks Giving Back Program, which started September 1st and will run through October 31st. John’s Crazy Socks is a fatherson social enterprise that was inspired by John Lee Cronin, a young man with Down Syndrome and his love of colorful and fun socks, or what he calls his “crazy socks”. John’s Crazy Socks has agreed to donate 10% of their net sales to WIBCC for every pair of socks purchased from their website, www. johnscrazysocks.com, when you enter the

charity code FG-WIBCC20.

Next month they will present Pink Flags of October, a month-long event to honor and remember those affected by Breast Cancer. Hundreds of pink flags will be placed at the entrance of Good Samaritan Hospital. You have the opportunity to purchase a ribbon in honor of or in memory of someone whose life has been affected by Breast Cancer. These ribbons will be tied to the flags and together the flags and ribbons will fly for the entire month of October. On Sunday, September 27 from 12-2PM at The Cancer Institute (111 Beach Drive in West Islip), there will be a ceremony to celebrate this month-long event, which will include health information, light refreshments and more. If you purchase a ribbon, you can attend the event and place the name of whom it is in honor of or in memory of right on the ribbon itself. If you cannot attend, it will be placed for you. If you would simply like to make a donation directly to this coalition, you can securely do so online at www.wibcc.org. With regard to home repairs, homeowners may be able to delay some projects until the weather permits or they find room in their budgets. But other areas, including the roof, may demand immediate action. Few homeowners give the roofs of their homes much thought until a problem arises. But learning to recognize potential indicators of roof trouble can help homeowners prevent potentially drastic situations down the road. • Light: Homeowners with attics in their homes can inspect the ceilings inside the attic for signs of holes or leaks. Light peering through the top of the house indicates a hole or leak, as does stains or streaks on the ceiling. • Worn shingles: Shingles should lie ﬂat against the roof, so any

that appear to be buckling or turning up are damaged and in need of repair. A single damaged shingle does not require a full roof replacement, but inspect all the shingles nonetheless. Another indicator of shingle problems can be found when cleaning downspouts or gutters. If the gutters and downspouts contain lots of shingle granules, the roof may soon need to be replaced. • Moss: Moss on a rooftop may give a home character, but that added character is costly. Shady areas of a roof can be susceptible to the growth of moss and fungi because moisture can be trapped in such areas. If possible, remove moss or fungi from a roof with a stiff brush or hire a professional to do the job instead. Moss may come back even after brushing it off, so homeowners should

keep an eye on areas of their roofs that get little sunlight. In addition, trapped moisture can be very harmful to a roof, so it may be wise to exercise caution and have roofs with mold or fungi growths inspected. • Age: Another indicator of roof trouble may be the age of the roof. Even if there are no visible signs of damage, homeowners whose roofs have some years under their belt may want to consider replacing them. Asphalt shingle roofs typically have life expectancies of 20 to 25 years, while roofs installed over existing layers of shingles may need to be replaced after 20 years. Recognizing minor roof damage before it escalates into a larger problem can save homeowners substantial amounts of money.

45th Annual West Islip Country Fair Cancelled

Annual Country Fair in West Islip is another victim of COVID 19! Committee, the celebration was planned by a group of 12 community residents, business people and school staff who wanted to acknowledge our nation’s 200th birthday by uniting our schools, religious groups, local organizations and our neighborhoods. A whole weekend of events was presented including a parade through town, a pageant of 13 schools representing the original 13 colonies, and an old fashioned Country Fair.

The Annual Fair takes place on one day only but because there are no admission fees for attendees and there are several entrances to the school grounds adjacent to the Public Library, it is impossible to limit the crowds that attend. The crowds (numbering in the thousands) come from Long Island, New York City and outside New York State. The vendors and attendees have been attracted to this popular event which features 300 craft vendors, live musical entertainment on stage, a diverse food court, pony rides, petting zoo, numerous games and attractions for children of all ages, as well as exhibits by local community organizations. Every year all remaining funds are donated to local organizations: scholarships to high school seniors, Robotics, Boy Scout Troups, food pantries, American Legion, Festival of Lights, West Islip Library, West Islip Symphony Orchestra, ETM Memorial Fund, Little League Baseball Club, West Islip Soccer, and emergency situations requiring financial support.

Library Budget Approved

2020-2021 Annual Library Budget Approved. Louise Sokolowski Re-elected as Library Trustee West Islip residents approved the 2020-2021 Library Budget in a vote held at the Library on Tuesday, September 15. The $4,4,063,043 operating budget was approved by a vote of 192 yes to 27 no. Louise Sokolowski was reelected to a five-year term as Library Trustee with 197

votes. “Everyone at the West Islip Public Library wishes to express their appreciation to all who participated in the budget vote process, especially considering the obstacles presented by current Coronavirus pandemic” said Director Andrew

2020-2021 Annual Library Budget Approved. Louise Sokolowski re-elected as Library Trustee

West Islip residents approved the 2020-2021 Library Budget in a vote held at the Library on Tuesday, September 15. The $4,4,063,043 operating budget was approved by a vote of 192 yes to 27 no. Louise Sokolowski was re-elected to a five-year term as Library Trustee with 197 votes. “Everyone at the West Islip Public Library wishes to express their appreciation to all who participated in the budget vote process, especially considering the obstacles presented by current Coronavirus pandemic” said Director Andrew Hamm. “The Board of Trustees and the library staff look forward to working together with the community to overcome the difficulties that the pandemic has brought and expand on our role as a center of civic life in the West Islip community.”
