United Cerebral Palsy Association of Greater Suffolk, Inc. (UCP of Suffolk) is pleased to announce that Great South Bay YMCA has been chosen as the First Runner-up for the 2013 Works For Me Recognition Award in the category of not-for–profit Employer of the Year by the New York State Office for People With Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD). The award is presented annually to select employers throughout New York State which have demonstrated a great commitment to workforce diversity through the hiring of talented employees with developmental disabilities. They will be recognized during a ceremony to be held in Albany this October. The Great South Bay YMCA was chosen based upon a nomination submitted by UCP of

Suffolk which recognized the YMCA’s leadership and commitment to employing individuals with disabilities. Jason Levenbaum was referred to the YMCA through UCP of Suffolk’s The Employment Connection, which provides Supported Employment Services. Supported Employment offers employment related services, such as career assessment and counseling, work preparation, employment training, and job placement, so a person with a disability can become employed and independent. According to Jerry Limone, Supported Employment Supervisor, “The Great South Bay YMCA has been an extremely supportive environment for Jason. It has allowed Jason to become very comfortable in his job and approach it with great confidence.

Jason is a well liked and respected employee of the YMCA and is frequently invited to attend social outings with his co-workers and supervisors. When Jason requested more hours, the Executive Director of the YMCA, Bob Pettersen, created a timekeeper position in the athletic department for him so he could work evenings. The YMCA also developed a motivational speaking opportunity for Jason. When Worlds Collide By: Jamie Lynn Ryan With the fall season tends to come an avalanche of entertainment. You have the intersection of football and baseball, new television season premieres and lots of movie and music releases to contend with, making your recreational choices far more interesting for the first time in months. What to watch, what to do…so many decisions, but for a change, the fun, trivial kind. This collision of all things entertainment never really hit me before until I happened to be attending a New York Mets game on the

very same night as the U.S. Open was taking place next door. As both events let out at seemingly the exact same instant, the rush of people streaming into one another (literally) was quite an experience, with those from Citi Field heading to the train platform and those from the Tennis Center making their way to the subways down below. It was an interesting contrast – quite the range of diversity on that boardwalk in that moment… people from all walks of life mingling after a night of taking in some of the finest local athletes (well, at the Tennis Center

anyway!). So typically…I guess New Yorkish is the best way to describe the scene. Add to that the ushering in of the autumn season, everyone being back to school, shaking off the last remnants of summer…it brought a unique sense of excitement to the air. Transitions are never easy, whether in weather or in life, but – in both instances – they simply must be dealt with. Like with most things beyond our control, they are better off embraced than shunned. So welcome autumn with open arms – it’s coming whether you like it or not.

The Long Island Game Farm Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo has announced that its inaugural Fall Festival will take place on weekends starting September 28th and running through October 27th. While many Long Island outdoor locations close down in the fall and do not reopen until spring or summer, the Game Farm will stay open on Saturdays and Sundays in early autumn, even after the regular season ends on Columbus Day, October 11th. There will be pumpkins, a farm stand, hay maze, pony rides, craft vendors and much more, along with the usual exhibits that the Game Farm provides during the spring and summer seasons. Hours are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with prices to be announced in the near future. The Game Farm is also looking for vendors for the Fall Festival.
