Lend A Helping Hand: The non-surgical modalities of treatment for breast cancer chemotherapy and radiation leave the patient in the need of a “Helping Hand”. Awareness: Breast Cancer is survivable.

Awareness of the treatments available is key to beating it.

As like many other nonprofit organizations, the WIBCC holds various fundraising events throughout the year to gain awareness and collect funds in support of their mission. This September they are part of Stop & Shop’s Community Bag Program. WIBCC will receive a $1 donation every time a $2.50 reusable Community Bag is purchased at 400 Union Blvd in West Islip, unless otherwise directed by the customer through the Giving Tag attached to the bag. Additionally, they are participating in John’s Crazy Socks Giving Back Program, which started September 1st and will run through October 31st. John’s Crazy Socks is a father-son social enterprise that was inspired by John Lee Cronin, a young man with Down Syndrome and his love of colorful and fun socks, or what he calls his “crazy socks”. John’s Crazy Socks has agreed to donate 10% of their net sales to WIBCC for every pair of socks purchased from their website, www.johnscrazysocks.com, when you enter the charity code FG-WIBCC20. The Charity of The Month for September is:

The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition for Long Island, Inc. (WIBCC) is a non-profit grassroots organization that was founded in 1992. They work to eradicate Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Their mission is to provide support services to women undergoing treatment and requiring postmastectomy care with their “Lead A Helping Hand” program, and to actively promote cancer and environmental awareness with education, advocacy and outreach throughout the community. The annual Over 50 Fair, in its 11th year, will be a virtual charity conference benefitting The INN (Interfaith Nutrition Network). Usually the Over 50 Fair takes place at an area hotel and has attendance of 500-700 who enjoy its 30 exceptional classes, singles lounge, senior beauty queens, and more. Because of COVID-19, this year’s event can be enjoyed by computer or phone on September 12 and 13 from 12-4 each day. 10 local speakers, some of whom are experts in their field, will be sharing information about a variety of topics of interest to Baby Boomers and seniors, including long term care insurance, a comedy show, Microsoft training, reverse mortgages, and cleaning without chemicals. The Over 50 Fair is the brainchild of East Hills resident Barbara Kaplan, who also coordinates the hugely successful All Kids Fair each year. She said that the Over 50 Fair is always “Overflowing with Opportunities for Age 50+,” although this year is a bit scaled down due to being virtual. Seniors may have limited mobility or opportunities to get out of the house. Receiving mail is one way to connect with the outside world. Regularly send letters to a grandparent or other senior, sharing tales of daily life and key moments that will bring them joy. Chances are they’ll return the favor with a letter of their own. Explore technology

together. Younger generations can introduce seniors to available technology that can bring them closer. This may include digital assistants that enable them to share videos, tablets to send email or access social media, mobile phones for calling and texting, and anything else families can customize to their needs. Shop and run errands. Help aging loved ones perform the tasks that they may not be able to tackle on their own. This can include picking up groceries or prescriptions.

Did you know? Many people plan to retire by a certain age, but few may actually still be working at their targeted retirement age. In the United States, the age at which working Americans expect to retire has risen to 66. But a Gallup poll showed that most don’t stay on the job that long, instead retiring

when they’re about 60 or 61. In addition, according to a 2018 Employee Benefit Research Institute survey, 48 percent of workers wanted to retire after age 65, but only 19 percent of retirees stayed on the job that long. The reasons vary, but one positive outcome is

having enough money to live comfortably during retirement. Still, early retirement largely involves unexpected scenarios. These may include poor health, having to care for an aging parent, downsizing, new skills required for the job, or other work-related reasons.

September 11, 2001, was a tragic day in American history. On that day, nearly 3,000 innocent lives were lost due to the terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington, D.C. as well as in rural Pennsylvania, where another plane en route for more destruction crashlanded. The indelible images of the World Trade Center collapsing in flames with crowds running for safety, as well as the ensuing visions of heroes and citizens working together, have created a lasting impression. While buildings have been repaired and new sites erected in the wake of the attacks, there are many ways to continue to honor the fallen. Patriot Day, which takes place each year on September 11 to honor those who lost their lives in the 9-11 attacks,

is one such example. The following are a handful of ways that people can honor 9-11 victims and their families. • Celebrate local heroes by visiting or making donations of food or supplies to local firehouses and police stations. • Commemorate the events of 9-11 by observing moments of silence at key times throughout the day: 8:46 a.m, 9:03 a.m., 9:37 a.m., 9:59 a.m., 10:03 a.m., and 10:28 a.m. • Engage in service projects that can help your community, including its underserved individuals, like veterans. National Day of Service, which is the same day as Patriot Day, asks people to do at least one good deed in honor of those who died on 9-11. • Make a trip to New York City and visit the National September 11 Memorial & Museum.

• If you display a flag at your home or business, be sure to place it at half staff from sunrise to sunset to mourn the lives lost. • Share stories of the heroism and bravery of first responders with young children who may not have been alive in 2001. • Unite the country by promoting acceptance of and kindness to all people, regardless of religious or political beliefs. • Visit memorials honoring the fallen in various communities in and around your home. This Patriot Day, there are many ways individuals can honor those who lost their lives on 9-11. Editor’s Note: The Patriot Day celebrated on September 11 is a separate holiday from Patriot’s Day, which is observed on the third Monday in April in Massachusetts.

West Islip Public Library Budget Vote To Be Held On Tuesday September 15 The West Islip Public Library Board of Trustees has proposed an operating budget of $4,063,043 for 2020-2021 which will be voted on by residents on Tuesday, September 15, from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. in the Library. This vote was rescheduled from April 14 due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Approval of the budget will result in a tax appropriation of $4,036,414, which is a decrease of -8.48%. This reduction is due to the library having repaid most of the debt service remaining for the Library Improvement Bond, which had been collected since the bond was approved in 2000. Details of the budget can be found in the September-October issue the library newsletter, The Source, which will be mailed to the community at the end of August The proposed library budget recognizes both importance of maintaining the library as a valuable resource for the community in these challenging times while acknowledging the struggles facing local taxpayers. Although the

budget calls for small increases in funding for library materials, particularly e-Books, and adult, teen, and children’s programs and activities, these are more than offset by the imminent retirement of the debt service. It is estimated that the proposed library budget and reduced debt service will result in a substantially lower tax appropriation that will reduce the average homeowner’s annual library tax by -$37.53. “The Library Board realizes that any budget increase is of concern to taxpayers” said Library Director Andrew Hamm, “so they are pleased that community members will see a reduction in overall library tax while continuing to support a vibrant and robust library”. Also on the ballot on September 15 is one fiveyear position for Library Trustee. Incumbent Board President Louise Sokolowski is running unopposed. All residents are encouraged to vote on Tuesday, September 15. Voting will be by paper ballot in Library Meeting

Room A from 10am to 9pm. Social Distancing and Masks are required to enter the library. For those who are eligible to vote in school/library elections but are not registered, a Registration Day will be held at the library on Tuesday September 8, from 4-8pm. New York Blood Center is calling on the community to make appointments to visit donor centers as COVID-19 has fundamentally changed the process of donating blood. Before COVID-19, mobile blood drives hosted by high schools, colleges, businesses and other organizations made up about 75% of the region’s incoming blood supply, but the number of blood drives has dropped by twothirds this year due to the pandemic. The upcoming school year presents new and unprecedented challenges. Blood donations are typically lower during the summer and the return to school usually helps make up the difference and stabilize the blood supply. In the past, school and college drives have resulted in 75,000 blood donations during each school year. “The pandemic is forcing us to rethink the entire landscape, which means encouraging donors to take the extra step of

making an appointment and traveling to a donor center. The loss of young donors is a particular challenge because our future blood supply is dependent on these firsttime donors becoming lifetime donors,” said Andrea H. Cefarelli, Senior Executive Director of Recruitment & Marketing for New York Blood Center. “We’ve always relied on the fall to provide a boost in blood donations from high school and college students hosting drives and this year we know this relief will not be coming.” NYBC began hosting a limited number of drives again this summer, however they are far from the number of drives per month needed to support area hospitals. NYBC is encouraging eligible donors of all ages to adapt to this new normal by making appointments to visit a one of its 19 donors centers, which have expanded capacity and hours of operation in order safely accommodate more

donors. A Summer Of Science At BNL For Four West Islip High Schoolers

Four West Islip High School research program students conducted research virtually this summer in collaboration with scientists at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Olivia Vice was part of the High School Summer Research Program, working on a project titled “Benchmarking Rear Door

Heat Exchangers for BNL’s Data Center.” Three students participated in BNL’s Student Partnerships for Advanced Research and Knowledge Spectroscopy summer program: Evan Lam with “Preliminary Evidence for Presence of Varnished Rocks on Eastern Long Island,” Gianna Pillitteri with “The

Mineralogy of Oyster Shells from the 1600’s through Present Time” and Brett Powell with “Sediments Present in Man-Made SWR Pond.” All four students committed six weeks of their summer to these programs and presented their culminating posters at a virtual poster session on Aug. 14.

Mulched leaves also served to control future weed growth by covering up bare spots between turf plants. Such spots typically provided openings for weed seeds to germinate and ultimately infect lawns. In fact, researchers found that

mulching leaves for just three years could produce a nearly 100 percent decrease in dandelion and crabgrass growth. Homeowners with mulching mowers that also have bags can even help their gardens by alternating using the mower with and without the bag on once leaves begin to fall. When mowing with the bag on, mulched leaves can then be used as mulch in landscape beds and vegetable gardens.
