The Charity of the Month for September is: The Twilight Wish Foundation www.twilightwish.org
The Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight W i s h celebrations. Senior citizens are the fastest growing population in the world. The number of Americans who are 65 and older is projected to more than double to over 98 million by 2060. In the United States today, 1 in 3 seniors older than 65 live alone and the number of seniors living alone only increases with age. Many of these seniors experience social isolation, which can lead to undesirable conditions. Granting a Twilight Wish can help change that! You can qualify for a Twilight Wish if you are at least 65 years old, are a legal U.S. citizen, demonstrate financial need, provide a history of giving back to others and possess the cognitive, emotional and physical ability to experience the wish. Since the organization’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued. Sometimes a wish fulfills an immediate need, and sometimes it is a last wish or lifetime dream. Large or small, all wishes provide a meaningful “thank you” to the senior for a lifetime of service to others. Every wish they grant helps build a culture that values
and respects our senior population. Twilight Wish recipients report that having their wish granted impacted their life for the better. Their mental and physical health often improved, positively changing their outlook on life! The wishes that this organization grants truly changes the way that our society views aging, as it witnesses seniors living life to the fullest. By sharing their recipients’ stories, they inspire both older and younger generations and help bring about a cultural shift in how aging is perceived in our society. To date, the Twilight Wish Foundation has granted over 3,000 wishes throughout our country, ranging from simple needs wishes, such as shaving razors for nursing home veterans, to living life to the fullest wishes, such as going cross country in a tractor trailer truck. This Foundation has expanded throughout America and they currently have 17 chapters. The majority of their chapter directors and chapter volunteers have full-time jobs, but volunteer their time because they believe so much in the impact Twilight Wish has on our senior population. They are presently looking to expand their outreach to seniors by making our business and community leaders/charitable organizations aware of who they are. There are many ways that you can get involved with this great organization. Stay tuned for next week’s article to learn some of the ways how. During the LIMF event, each performing ensemble had the opportunity to be rated by a panel of expert adjudicators. Each adjudicator provided a set of constructive comments, a clinic working on their performance music and
a group rating. The day concluded with a visit to the Splish Splash water park in Calverton. “This event was a musical and educational experience for all of the students who participated,” said Lynnette Fawess, the middle school orchestra director. “We are all extremely proud of the students’ hard work.”

Estelle has certainly kept busy the last century, serving in World War II and returning to her native West Islip as one of the first nurses hired at Southside Hospital, later finishing her career at Good Samaritan Hospital in her hometown. Motivated Minds West Islip students from kindergarten through fourth grade kept their minds active during Summer Investigations, the district’s annual program designed to support math and literacy skills. Weekly themes integrate the curriculum to motivate students, who regularly visit the STEM lab and library for hands-on experiences and research. Students are invited from
across the district to attend the program, held this summer at Paul J. Bellew Elementary School. In “Passport around the World,” students researched countries such as Mexico, India, Nigeria, Brazil and China, including use of Google Earth; while in the lab, they created rockets and learned how airplanes fly. A visit from a West Islip Public Library representative included
making Mexican masks and a reading of Mem Fox’s book about acceptance and diversity, “Whoever You Are.” “The students made wonderful progress each and every day, and we are all very proud of their efforts and positive attitudes,” said Bellew Principal Rhonda Pratt, who serves as summer coordinator for the program.
