The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition for Long Island, Inc. (WIBCC) is a non-profit grassroots organization that was founded in 1992. They work to eradicate Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Their mission is to provide support services to women undergoing treatment and requiring post-mastectomy care with their “Lead A Helping Hand” program, and to actively promote cancer and environmental awareness with education, advocacy and outreach throughout the community.

To accomplish their mission, they focus on pressing these goals: Prevention: Support, encouragement and education about a healthy lifestyle. Research: To promote legislation to increase funding for environmental research and provide funding for specific breast cancer projects. Education: Providing up-to-date information through their website, newsletter, information packets and education seminars. They offer adult and student awareness programs designed to help participants increase their awareness of Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Services: To offer breast and gynecological cancer patients services paid for and facilitated by WIBCC via the “Lend A Helping Hand” program. Lend A Helping Hand: The non-surgical modalities of treatment for breast cancer chemotherapy and radiation leave the patient in the need of a “Helping Hand”. Awareness: Breast Cancer is survivable. Awareness of the treatments available is key to beating it.

As like many other non-profit organizations, the WIBCC holds various fundraising events throughout the year to gain awareness and collect funds in support of their mission. This September they are part of Stop & Shop’s Community Bag Program. WIBCC will receive a $1 donation every time a $2.50 reusable Community Bag is purchased at 400 Union Blvd in West Islip, unless otherwise directed by the customer through the Giving Tag attached to the bag. Additionally, they are participating in John’s Crazy Socks Giving Back Program, which started September 1st and will run through October 31st. John’s Crazy Socks is a father-son social enterprise that was inspired by John Lee Cronin, a young man with Down Syndrome and his love of colorful and fun socks, or what he calls his “crazy socks”. Keep Devices In Top Shape And Running Well The need for reliable technology has never been more apparent. When the world hit the proverbial pause button in the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak, technology was crucial to keeping people connected to the world around them, helping people maintain some semblance of normalcy as it pertained to work and education. Students and families who have invested in various electronics to help keep their household running should understand that maintenance is required to keep these devices running effectively. These tips can help keep gadgets in tip-top shape. • Protect devices from extreme temperatures. Electronic devices are

designed to operate under an array of conditions, but pushing those conditions can result in damage. Most devices are fine between temperatures of 32 F and 90 F. But don’t leave electronics in the car, in a sunny window or outdoors. devices • Clean regularly. Refer to the user’s manual for the proper ways to clean the devices you rely on each day. Some may require a specific cleaner or a particular fabric to help ensure the device isn’t scratched or damaged. Spray cleaners on a cloth and then wipe off devices, rather than spraying cleaners directly on electronics. Try a can of compressed air to remove dust from crevices or vents.

• Invest in a surge protector. While surge protector power strips multiply the number of available outlets, they also serve a more important purpose. These devices will cut off power to plugged-in electronics if there is a power surge, helping to prevent damage. • Don’t overcharge. It’s essential to have gadgets charged and ready to go, but overcharging can reduce battery life. Do not leave devices charging overnight. Battery University ™, a free educational website offering battery information, says that nickel- and lithiumbased batteries should be stored with a 40 percent state-of-charge. This level minimizes age-related capacity loss and keeps the battery in good condition. • Use protective cases. Cases can prevent damage if devices are dropped and also may safeguard against scratched screens. Cases and covers also minimize dust and dirt on devices. • Keep software upto-date. Security issues may arise when software is not updated, and programs may not run effectively or be compatible with others. Along the same vein, routinely clean out unused files to free up space, and clear cookies and browser histories to maintain speed and efficiency. Routine maintenance can keep electronics working properly when they’re needed the most.

West Islip Public Library Budget Vote To Be Held On Tuesday September 15 In the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak, many schools hastily transitioned from traditional in-person learning to remote learning. This transition posed new and unique challenges to educators as well as students and their parents. One of the biggest challenges posed by remote learning was keeping students connected to their teachers and their classmates, not all of whom had readily available access to devices that could facilitate such connections. In recognition of that challenge, school systems worked to procure devices for students only to be confronted by another challenge: low bandwidth. According to Microsoft, bandwidth refers to the amount of data that can be transferred over an internet connection per second. Low bandwidth can compromise students’ ability to stay connected to their virtual classrooms. In an effort to help

students overcome that challenge, Microsoft offers the following tips on how educators, students and parents can manage low bandwidth during remote learning sessions. • Reduce reliance on video during class sessions. Turning video cameras off during live class sessions can help to overcome the challenges posed by low bandwidth, as live video is a key contributor to excessive use of bandwidth. If video must be used, encourage students to turn off their cameras when they are not speaking. • Use pre-recorded content. Pre-recording content enables students to stream video over the internet, saving those with low bandwidth the hassle of downloading large video files to their computers. Microsoft recommends educators who prerecord content for their students to stream to instruct those students to use class time to complete assignments.

Educators can help students avoid that issue by not requiring them to submit videos as part of their assignments. • Encourage students to sync files to their devices. Each device is different and each manufacturer has its own instructions on how to sync files to devices. But Microsoft notes that syncing files to a device allows students to read them offline, which is ideal for students with limited internet connectivity. Low bandwidth poses a challenge for remote learners. Thankfully, there are ways to overcome low bandwidth so students can keep learning.

The West Islip Public Library Board of Trustees has proposed an operating budget of $4,063,043 for 2020-2021 which will be voted on by residents on Tuesday, September 15, from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. in the Library. This vote was rescheduled from April 14 due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Approval of the budget will result in a tax appropriation of $4,036,414, which is a decrease of -8.48%. This reduction is due to the library having repaid most of the debt service remaining for the Library Improvement Bond, which had been collected since the bond was approved in 2000. Details of the budget can be found in the September-October issue the library newsletter, The Source, which will be mailed to the community at the end of August The proposed library budget recognizes both importance of maintaining the library as a valuable resource for the community in these challenging times while acknowledging the struggles facing local taxpayers. Although the

budget calls for small increases in funding for library materials, particularly e-Books, and adult, teen, and children’s programs and activities, these are more than offset by the imminent retirement of the debt service. It is estimated that the proposed library budget and reduced debt service will result in a substantially lower tax appropriation that will reduce the average homeowner’s annual library tax by -$37.53. “The Library Board realizes that any budget increase is of concern to taxpayers” said Library Director Andrew Hamm, “so they are pleased that community members will see a reduction in overall library tax while continuing to support a vibrant and robust library”. Also on the ballot on September 15 is one fiveyear position for Library Trustee. Incumbent Board President Louise Sokolowski is running unopposed. All residents are encouraged to vote on Tuesday, September 15. Voting will be by paper ballot in Library Meeting

These 30 people left their homes, their families, and their friends. As ICU nurses, they all possess a very specialized set of skills. Obituary Donald A. Marsden, a resident of Hempstead, LI., (formerly of Amityville) died August 20, 2020 at Winthrop University Hospital, Mineola, LI. He was 77 years old. Mr. Marsden was born in Amityville on August 28, 1942 to C. Arthur and Dorothy (Gookin) Marsden. Don was a product of Amityville schools where he graduated valedictorian of the class of 1960. Music was his career; he served as organist for St. Mark’s

United Methodist Church in addition to his other interests. According to Rev. Dr. Dick Johns former pastor of St. Mark’s Don sounded good recently but sad about having to give up his position as Music Director due to his failing eyesight. According to Pastor Dick he had the most amazing ability with the organ; a great sense of humor; he loved his pet Whippet, his Indonesian puppets; his old Mercedes, his house and the old church he and his wife

NORTHWELL ICU NURSES VOLUNTEER - In an effort to support fellow health care workers battling coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), 30 Northwell Health nurses answered the call to deploy to Utah to support Intermountain Healthcare.

Mary were remodeling for a summer home when Mary passed. He was a wonderful person and a great friend and will be missed. Don was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved wife Mary. A Memorial service was held at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, officiated by The Reverend Randolph Jon Geminder. Cremation was private. Arrangements were under the direction of Powell Funeral Home, Inc. Amityville, New York.

Babylon Village Art Walk The Babylon Village Arts Council (BVAC) will sponsor its first Babylon Village Art Walk on Saturday,September 19, 2020 from 11-3. In collaboration with the Babylon Village Chamber of Commerce the Art Walk will celebrate the arts within the Village. This free community event will take participants on a stroll through picturesque Babylon Village with a map of the highlighted stops on the Art Walk, promoting both the artist and business. A ‘Where’s Warhol’ style family scavenger hunt will be a children’s component in which a dozen Andy Warhol characters will be hidden

in windows at locations throughout the village. Permanent art fixtures such as Jack Jack’s J2X Abstract Art Gallery,Village Art and Frame as well as the Bayman statue by artist and sculptor Jose I. Fernandez will be featured on the walk. BVAC will set up a welcome station at Ooh la la Boutiques where maps can be picked up and there will be giveaways for children who find all of the hidden Warhol’s. BVAC strives to create innovative programs for the community and artists of all ages. This event has been in the planning phase for over a year and members are excited to see

it come to life this fall. This is a self-paced event. Registration is not required. The rain date will be the Saturday, September 26. All social distancing guidelines will be followed as artists will be spaced out throughout the village. Masks must be worn by all who take part.
