I don’t see anything? Luckily for them, the afternoon promised more stellar sights to behold. As the sun began peeking out once again, a commotion erupted up on the sand behind us, as a small crowd gathered around what at first glance appeared to be a stray dog. Upon further inspection, it proved to be a small furry fox, munching on a bagel, as he calmly eyed the growing swarm of beachgoers. He then trotted down the beach, bouncing from one blanket to the next, pausing under one woman’s umbrella as she sat engrossed in a book. Eventually, someone summoned a lifeguard, who determined that this particular fox was most likely a few years old and, though seemed friendly, was probably best left alone in pursuit of his dinner. As the crowd gradually dispersed, the sound of applause was heard down by the water. We turned to see everyone facing west, lifeguards included,
eyes fixated on something in the ocean. What now, is someone drowning? one lady was heard muttering. Well, I doubt the lifeguards would be standing applauding if that was the case, her husband retorted. As we made our way down to the shoreline, we saw a giant spray of water shoot up from the horizon, followed by a humpback whale flipping through the air and disappearing below the surf. Again, the crowd cheered. And again, the whale leapt into the air, as if taking a bow. I grabbed my phone and attempted to capture the sight, only to find myself filming several minutes of motionless water. But then, at last, he emerged once more. Out for yet another encore. As we headed back to our beach blanket, we passed the little boy as he breathlessly encapsulated the day’s happenings. I have to say, I half expected a zebra to come barreling over the sand dunes. It was that kind of afternoon.

An eclipse, a fox and a whale … what’s next? A zebra? These were the words overheard at Robert Moses Field 5 on the afternoon of Monday, August 21st, spoken by a little boy as he incredulously recounted the events of the day. Nearly 30 years his senior, I have to say I shared the sentiment. What started as a somewhat spontaneous vacation day to spend relaxing on the beach, perhaps catching a glimpse of the highly publicized 70% of a solar eclipse, turned into a relative bucket list of random natural sightings the likes of which couldn’t have been better orchestrated if one tried. After stealing a look at the crescent of golden light as the sky subtlety darkened around us, we decided it was only slightly as impressive as promised. The reactions from those on the surrounding beach blankets ranged from, Oh wow, that was incredible! to Wait, which end is it eclipsing from?

It was lightly raining But I went outside Ordered sad thoughts to hide. 100th ANNIVERSARY - Legislator Tom Cilmi presented a proclamation to Chief Joseph Rosadio of the Islip Terrace Fire Department to commemorate the Department’s 100th Anniversary. A parade of fire and EMS volunteers and vehicles from throughout the Town of Islip preceded a celebration at the firehouse which included children’s bouncy rides, food and live music.

Wondered, why to some “weeds” we say I liked what I did pick and see Took it inside in secret glee. Into my most expensive vase The varied array I did stick Yes, I much liked my odd pick. Creativity, just like in poetry Gives one an inner reward Ignites a positive feeling of sort.

Nassau BOCES is inviting all career-minded adults to attend its Open House on Wednesday, September 6th, from 7 to 9 p.m. From job training in entry-level positions, to coursework designed to advance current skills, this comprehensive program has something for everyone. Tour the Joseph M. Barry Career and Technical Education Center at 1196 Prospect Avenue in Westbury, meet the Adult Education faculty and view the state-of-the art facility. Adult Counselors will be on hand to discuss programs and offer career advice. No reservations are necessary and all are welcome, from individuals to families. Courses are available in a variety of fields including auto repair, culinary arts, healthcare, manufacturing, electrical trades, barbering, business, child development, construction, digital design, sewing and much

Once you have chosen a course you may register onsite. “Thanks to the Nassau BOCES Adult Education Program, I have learned medical coding and billing, and I’m applying these skills at a cardiologist’s office in Queens,” said Adult CTE graduate Anita Steiger. “With the training I received through the Nassau BOCES Welding Qualification course, I was able to start my own business,” successful graduate Christopher Devito has attested. “I am currently bidding for state contracts in demolition, fabrication and construction.” “We are very excited about the growth of our program,” said Michele Cohen, Assistant Principal of Adult Education. “We continue to introduce new courses while improving and enhancing current ones. Looking to “RID” County Parks of illegal dumping, Suffolk officials today announced the launch of its newly created “Parks Watch” program that will provide greater citizen involvement in the protection of county owned public lands. Modeled after the highly effective national Community Watch program, “Parks Watch” asks parks users and adjacent property owners to be partners in ridding our parks of debris by notifying police and Suffolk County Parks Department personnel. Tips of suspicious activity can now be called into the program’s dedicated RID hotline at 631.854.1423 or emailed to RID@ suffolkcountyny.gov. In advance of today’s announcement, the Suffolk County Parks Department has begun posting signs about the program and ways in which visitors can provide tips to authorities. Beyond new signs, the Parks Department will also begin a social media and public awareness campaign to highlight the importance of this new program and of protecting our public lands from illegal and potentially toxic debris. “We are pleased to be able to add another layer of protection for our parks,” Parks Commissioner Philip Berdolt said. “With

Tips for Teen Drivers
to focus on safe driving tips. Take a safe-driving course. Any licensed driver can benefit from a safedriving course. Check with the department of motor vehicles to find an approved list of driving courses available. In addition to providing valuable safety tips, enrollment in these courses may entitle people to discounts on auto insurance. Stay off of the phone. Texting and making phone calls reduces alertness on the road. That loss of focus, even if only for a few seconds, can result in drivers driving the equivalent of an entire football field without having their eyes on the road. Avoid mobile devices while driving. Pull over to make a call if there is an emergency; otherwise, leave the phone out of reach in a backseat. Use the headlights. Many cars now feature daytime running lights. For those that don’t, engage the headlights when driving. Using headlights increases
visibility and helps other drivers see approaching vehicles, even during the daytime. Leave plenty of time. Rushing around to make it to class or other appointments can lead to speeding and other dangerous driving habits. By leaving extra time, drivers will not feel stressed or rushed. Limit distractions behind the wheel. Novice drivers may become easily distracted by the radio or even other passengers. Until they gain ample experience, teen drivers should keep passengers and noises to a minimum. Stick to easy parking for now. New drivers can opt to park in spaces that have plenty of room or allow for pulling out (rather than backing out). This can improve visibility and reduce the risk of hitting other vehicles. Driving is exciting for newly licensed teens. but parents must emphasize the importance of defensive driving to their young drivers.
Reducing Risks of Sickness
School-aged kids who catch colds or the flu from their classmates can quickly spread those colds to their family members, who then might spread the colds further when they go to work. Preventing the spread of colds and flu at school is a team effort that requires the assistance of not just parents, but also teachers and students. Still, parents might be the first line of defense when it comes to preventing the spread of colds and the flu at school. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 38 million school days are lost to the flu each year. Those lost days can affect students who miss lesson plans, but also affect parents, who often must take days off from work to tend to their sick children. While there’s no way for parents to guarantee their children won’t catch a cold or the flu this school year, they can
take various preventive measures to increase kids’ chances of staying healthy and achieving perfect attendance. Make sure kids are immunized and that their immunizations are current. Vaccinations bolster kids’ immune systems. That’s important, as kids’ immune systems are naturally less mature than adults’, making them more vulnerable to germs and viruses. The CDC recommends that adults and children receive their flu vaccinations in October while noting that such vaccinations can be administered as late as January and still prove effective. The CDC also recommends that adults and children receive flu vaccinations each year. Additional vaccinations may not need to be administered as often, but parents should still ensure kids’ are up-to-date with their shots. Make sure kids regularly
wash their hands. Kids often catch colds by rubbing their hands that have been exposed to cold virus germs on their noses or eyes. To prevent that, parents can teach kids to wash to their hands thoroughly, including scrubbing the backs of their hands, between their fingers and around their fingernails. Kids should know to wash their hands regularly, but especially after they use the bathroom and before they eat, drink or touch their mouths, noses or eyes. Keep kids home when they are sick. Parents don’t want their children to miss school, but kids who are suffering from colds or flu should be kept home. This prevents the spread of colds and flu to classmates and teachers, and time to rest at home may help youngsters recover more quickly. Teach kids to avoid common germ spots. Germs can be lurking anywhere, but some spots seem to make more welcome homes for germs than others. Studies have shown that kids were most likely to encounter germs in schools on water fountain spigots and on plastic cafeteria trays. Teach kids to never put their mouths on fountains and to avoid eating any food that might fall onto their trays in the cafeteria. School-aged children are susceptible to colds and flu when spending time in the classroom. But parents can reduce their youngsters’ cold and flu risk in various ways.

Teenagers typically take to the open road without adults riding shotgun between the ages of 16 and 18, depending on where kids live. Although this can be an exciting time for them, it’s also a time that can change the family dynamic. Parents may have mixed feelings about their children getting their drivers’ licenses. Although many parents recognize the convenience of having another licensed driver in the house, it’s understandable if moms and dads are weary about inexperienced children behind the wheel. Such fears are not unfounded, as vehicular fatalities remain the leading cause of death for many teenagers. In the United States, teens are three times more likely to crash per mile driven than adults, according to data from Allstate. To help reduce the propensity for crashes, injury and death, families can work together

Teachers provide many things to their students. In addition to an education, support and guidance, many teachers also feel compelled to enhance their classrooms with supplies they’ve purchased out-of-pocket. According to a poll of 1,500 teachers conducted by the educational resource Edutopia, 93 percent of teachers feel obligated or somewhat obligated to buy school supplies for their classrooms with their own money. The Education Market Association says that virtually all teachers wind up paying out of pocket for supplies. The amounts spent annually can be upwards of $1,000 per teacher. In addition, not all of the teachers funding supplies work in low-income districts. A report published in early 2016 by the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities found that many states now provide less financial support per student than they did before the recession took hold roughly nine years ago. Districts forced to work under tight budgets are increasingly outsourcing the costs of supplies to parents. When parents fail to provide supplies, teachers are bearing the brunt of the costs to avoid seeing their students go without necessary resources.
