Not So Fast By: Jamie Lynn Ryan The autumn season is upon us. Well, at least in terms of retail, it is. As far as I’m concerned, there is still nearly one entire month of potential beach weather before us. No matter how many pairs of cute boots I see in stores, or autumn-scented candles and pumpkin-flavored everything, I remain in denial. Not yet. Maybe in a week or two…or three. What’s the big rush? For a region that happens to be blessed with all four seasons, we sure don’t take too much time to appreciate them.

We rush everything, much like our days, our weeks, our lives…and for what? To start complaining about the chilly weather and the inevitable snowstorms looming? As long as I can get away with wearing flip-flops, and running outside with no jacket on, you can bet I will. Longer days mean more time to do things too, instead of rushing home from work to hibernate on the couch in front of the TV. Although, I must say, I am looking forward to my shows returning for the Fall season. That said, the one regret I have about summer

“ending” is that all the catching up I was planning to do on various series and books, well, it just didn’t happen for one reason or another. Oh well. That’s what rainy days are for, I suppose. That and – dare I say it – any upcoming snow days?? In the meantime, try to enjoy this “last” week of summer – and maybe even the next few weekends as well. REBUILDING EFFORTS HONORED - Treasurer Carpenter was pleased to honor business’ and community organizations that helped with the rebuilding of the playground at the West Islip Marina which was destroyed by Superstorm Sandy. The West Islip Fire Department was one of over twenty different business’ or groups that donated time, money, and efforts to help with this project. Most of the funding for the rebuilding of the West Islip Marina Playground came from the “Where Angels Play” Suffolk County foundation, a foundation set up in memory of the Sandy Hook Elementary Victims. In order to honor the 26 victims of Sandy Hook Elementary School the goal is to build Legislator Tom Barraga recently visited one of 26 playgrounds. On August 3rd, in Central Park, the New York City Triathlon saw New York’s finest athletes swim, run and cycle to glory through New York City. This year, the roster included four of our city’s most dedicated athletes who made up Team LICADD. Together they raised over $11,000.00 for the council’s lifesaving work here on Long Island. Ed Kerner, Lee Goddard, Jeffrey Crane and Mary Alice O’Connor, in her first ever NYC Triathlon, participated in this year’s event for LICADD and brought spirit and heart into this annual New York tradition for Team LICADD. The participants dove into the Hudson River at 5 a.m. and brought in record times for this leg of the

event. The 1500 kilometer swim in the Hudson brought in times of 18 and 19 minutes for the team, they then jumped onto their bicycles and cycled 40 kilometers down the West Side Highway. The last part of this event was a 10K run in Central Park, again with stellar times. “This is my second New York City Triathlon this year, it meant even more to me to do this event. We all see and feel the crisis here in every part of New York. By competing in the NYC Triathlon I am able to “Pay It Forward,” said Ed Kerner. “When my wife and I moved back into the city a few years ago, I got involved with this event and I look forward to doing it again next year for Team LICADD. To me, nothing

is more important than the work this organization does on Long Island and I was proud to be involved.” For over 58 years, LICADD has successfully delivered evidence-based programs designed to prevent and treat substance abuse and addiction. LICADD offers crisis intervention, screenings, brief interventions, referrals to treatment and several family education workshops to help Long Islanders struggling with the effects of addiction. Through our Open Arms, EAP Program, LICADD has provided targeted solution-focused support to companies all along the East Coast, serving over 60,000 employees and their families.

Islip Animal Shelter and Adopt-a-Pet Center recently received a generous donation of Kong brand dog toys from Live. Love.Bark, the shelter’s non-profit volunteer group. The donation included more than 30 different toys ranging in size and style,

On Thursday August 14th, Legislature John Kennedy attended the Holiday Inn Check Presentation for Stony Brook Children’s Hospital. $20,000 was donated to the hospital’s building fund. The new Stony Brook Children’s Hospital will be completed in 2016; it will be housed in a new

10-level Hospital Pavilion adjacent to Stony Brook University Hospital The expansion will feature a pediatric intensive care unit, adolescent unit, procedure suite, hematology/oncology unit, medical/surgical units and modern patient and family amenities; new adult critical care and cardiac

care units; an expanded imaging department; and increased support space throughout. The Hospital has a building fund goal of $25,000,000; so far, a total of $9,980,670 has been donated to the building fund.

EDUCATING THE COMMUNITY - On Saturday, August 16th, Good Samaritan Hospital showcased its pediatric services with a Children’s Health Fair at Westfield South Shore Mall in Bay Shore. Stuttering is a frustrating and embarrassing problem for millions of people, but it can be especially tough on elementary school-age children. Help is available for parents, teachers, and speech-language pathologists at most public libraries in the form of a DVD designed to help school-age children who stutter. Some libraries have an older video version. “It’s meant to give speech-language pathologists the tools they need to deal with stuttering in this age group, but it also offers good ideas for parents and teachers,” said Professor Peter Ramig of the University of Colorado at Boulder. Ramig is one of five nationally recognized experts appearing in the DVD produced by the nonprofit Stuttering Foundation. The DVD features students from first through

sixth grade, some of whom talk about their experiences with stuttering. They talk openly about the teasing they face from classmates and how their stuttering sometimes makes them feel about themselves. “We focus on demonstrating a variety of therapy strategies that are appropriate in working with children who stutter,” adds Ramig. He appears in the DVD along with speechlanguage pathologists Barry Guitar, Ph.D., of the University of Vermont, Hugo H. Gregory, Ph.D., and June Campbell, M.A., of Northwestern University, and Patricia Zebrowski, P.D., of the University of Iowa. These five experts answer questions about stuttering, refute myths and misconceptions, and present examples of therapy sessions showing how stuttering can be reduced.

More than three million Americans stutter, yet stuttering remains misunderstood by most people,” said Jane Fraser, president of the Stuttering Foundation. “Myths such as believing people who stutter are less intelligent or suffer from psychological problems still persist despite research refuting these erroneous beliefs.” The 38-minute DVD, entitled Therapy in Action: The School-age Child Who Stutters, produced by the 67-year-old nonprofit Stuttering Foundation is available free of charge to public libraries nationwide.
