In addition to an evening of camaraderie and enjoying the delicious food at Captain Bill’s, the Society installed its new officers and trustees. The Long Island Game Farm recently received a hammock made out of a used fire hose that was created by a retired firefighter for the Game Farm’s gibbons. The gibbons, who are sisters, immediately started enjoying their new
hammock once it was installed in their cage. Tom Lambui, a retired fireman and husband of Stacy Lambui, who works in the Game Farm’s Customer Service Department, acquired an old fire hose from Anthony J. Morabito, Service

This Labor Day weekend the American Airpower Museum at Republic Airport will launch an unprecedented formation flight of historic B-25 Mitchell bombers and WWII escort fighters for a tribute flight near the World Trade Center and Statue of Liberty to salute our armed forces serving in the War on Terror.
Throughout the upcoming holiday weekend, Friday, August 30th through Monday September 2nd, between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., these aircraft will also be on public display at the museum’s Farmingdale facility along with a squadron of other World War II planes, vintage cars and period armor as it hosts
its annual Wings, Wheels and Tracks celebration. Flight experiences will also be available in a B-25. Labor Day weekend adult admission at the museum is $15, Senior/ Veteran (with ID) is $10, children between 4 and 12 are $4 and children three and under are free.

Birthdays. Some people love them, others despise that annual reminder that, like it or not, time is flying by – with or without you. Personally, I’ve always been a fan – not on the my-birthday-should-be-anational-holiday scale, but definitely as an occasion that I’ve looked forward to each year. Summer Prep Work Pays Dividends
As summer comes to a close, many teens find it easy to get caught up in the stress and monotony associated with school. Some find it even easier to give up on the coursework assigned during the summer break. Reading all of the books and doing all of the mathematics packets may seem like the least desirable option during these warm months, but it is undoubtably the most crucial. Summer homework does not bring many students joy. Summer homework does, however have an enormous impact on your grades. Missing this first assignment can be detrimental to your first
quarter average. In an era where college admissions are at an all time high in selectivity, those few points can make or break a person. Something as small as forgetting to turn in that book report freshman year can, in time, prevent you from attaining your dreams. With this in mind, it is an absolute necessity to complete your work! Even if school hasn’t yet started, the choices you make can affect your standing in September. In my school, your summer work accounts for about 20% of your first quarter grade! That means, if you were to get a zero on that work, you could get a maximum of only eighty.
Study hard now, so you won’t have to the night before school starts. Doing a little bit of work each night will undoubtably make your last few days of summer more enjoyable. Even though reading a book or doing some math problems may seem like a terrible time, every moment you spend will be repaid when you get into the college of your dreams. Putting in the extra effort now will result in a positive outcome in the future. On the other hand, slacking during your summers will only haunt you. Take the first step towards a superior grade - do your summer homework!

The students and staff at Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) Masera Learning Center in West Islip received a personal thank you visit from representatives at Teachers Federal Credit Union (TFCU) on Wednesday, July 24th, for their outstanding efforts during the company’s Long Island-wide food drive. The Masera student body collected 207 jars of peanut butter and jelly and donated them to the Bay Shore branch during the month of June, which TFCU designated as Peanut Butter and Jelly Month. (The Bay Shore branch collected a total of 220 jars, the majority of which came from Masera.)

In addition to the onsite visit, TFCU presented each student with a small stuffed animal. Masera’s remarkable commitment to community service allowed the Bay Shore branch to
amass more jars than any other location in TFCU’s 24-branch organization. This food drive benefited local food pantries in the communities in which each branch serves. TFCU scheduled the drive to
coincide with the end of the school year to provide children who rely on school lunch programs with meals during the summer. The Bay Shore branch donated the food to the Peanut Butter and Jelly Gang, a pantry located in the basement of St. Anne’s Roman Catholic Church in Brentwood. Said Nicole Drinkwater, principal at Masera Learning Center, “This was a great experience for our students and the participation of their families and our staff was tremendous. We collected a mountain of jars for the drive and piled them high on adjoining tables for the students to have a visual understanding of what they achieved. I’m so proud of our school’s contributions and we’re grateful that TFCU took the time to personally acknowledge our students.”

for the 10U-A Division Championship. The Black Diamonds came out with 2 in the first to take a 2-0 lead. In the top of the 4th inning, the Farmingdale Vikings scored 2 runs to tie the game at 2-2 and put the pressure on the Black Diamonds. In the bottom of the 5th inning, the Black Diamonds got exactly what they needed; a string of three straight hits that started a rally brought the game to 5-2. In the 6th, with great pitching and some nice plays in the field, the Black Diamonds prevailed and won the game, 5-2. The Black Diamonds have WON three straight tournaments. After the game, the WI Black Diamonds donated an additional $250 to the Franco family, whose son played in the tournament. Currently, the Franco family’s mom is battling brain cancer. On August 24th, the Black Diamonds are hosting a Fund Raiser

Avoiding the dreaded “freshman 15” weight gain is a challenge to some young students when faced for the first time with a daily array of healthy and not-so-healthy food choices.
