Students Earn Distinguished Awards Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Huntington Station) recently honored 15 local students as Gold, Silver and Bronze recipients of the Suffolk County Legislature’s Distinguished Youth Award (DYA). Earning the awards after completion of an extensive year-long program, they were each recognized with medals and certificates in a special ceremony at the Suffolk County Legislature’s William H. Rogers Building in Hauppauge. A record number of students in Legislator Donnelly’s district completed the extensive DYA requirements in this second year of the program. A total of 31 Suffolk students earned awards, with nearly half of them, the largest representation ever, from Legislative District 17. The DYA program was created by the Legislative Resolution Number 4192017. The voluntary recognition program centers on four categories: Volunteer Service, Personal Development, Exploration and Physical Fitness and focuses on a holistic

approach to challenge the County’s youth to take initiative, become more civically engaged in their communities and begin a journey of personal growth. Students dedicate themselves to completing requirements in two, three or all four categories for Bronze, Silver or Gold recognition, respectively. Each category can require up to 100 or more hours of activity that must be logged and certified. In addition, students complete personal interviews in the Legislator’s office at the onset of the program and then at the completion. The program is open to all Suffolk County Youths between the ages of 13 and 18. Walt Whitman High School in the South Huntington School District had the most award recipients in the program with ten: Armany Alfaro (Gold), Nicolas Allain (Gold), Pamela Carey (Bronze), Samantha Carey (Bronze), Sindy Alvarez Garay (Gold), Ethan Halle (Gold), Oscar Armando Hernandez (Gold), Alyssa Katwala (Silver), Priya Katwala (Gold) and Katherine

Miata (Gold). Other local youths who earned DYAs were: Ashley Beck (Gold) and Oyin Olukoya (Gold) from North Babylon High School; Gianna Tantillo (Silver) from Half Hollow Hills High School East; Daniel Thompson (Gold) from Robert Frost Middle School in Deer Park; and, from St. John the Baptist High School in West Islip, Max Wenzel (Gold). “I commend all of these remarkable students for their commitment and enthusiasm,” said Legislator Donnelly. “They demonstrated initiative in embarking on the program and dedication in sticking with it to completion. Their final presentations were inspiringly detailed and very impressive.” Registration is currently underway for the 20192020 Distinguished Youth Awards Program. CLAM SHUCKING CONTEST - Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter attended the 25th Annual Clam Shucking Contest hosted by the West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition. The contest, held at Nicky’s on the Bay in Bay Shore, drew community members, elected officials and representatives from Good Samaritan Hospital to the annual event. The fundraiser included a Clam Shucking Contest, Chinese Auction and raffles, The Chapey Prize Wheel, activities for kids, as well as Radio Personalities “FINGERS & JP” from WBAB, who were accompanied by the “Beach Blender” Brian who DJ’d the event. All proceeds from the day went to breast and gynecological cancer care and research. “The Town of Islip congratulates the West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition on their 25th anniversary, and commends the organization’s tireless efforts to advocate for and support womens’ health,” said Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter. Also in attendance joining Supervisor Carpenter were representatives from Councilwoman Mary Kate Mullen, Councilman John C. Cochrane, Jr. and Councilman James P. O’Connor’s offices.

New Principal At Manetuck

Vanessa Williams was recently named the new principal of West Islip’s Manetuck Elementary School, replacing Dawn Morrison. Williams comes to West Islip from Aquebogue Elementary School, where she had served as assistant principal since 2017 and earlier worked as a literacy coach and a first and second grade classroom teacher. A 2014 honoree of the SCOPE Teacher Service Award, she previously taught second grade at PS 9 Ryer Elementary School in the Bronx and second grade summer school in

the Hempstead School District. The Selden resident earned her bachelor’s degree in political science at Winthrop University in South Carolina, a master’s degree in childhood education at Adelphi University, and a project leader dual certification from St. John’s University. “Thank you to all who have welcomed and embraced me as the new principal of Manetuck,” Williams said. “For those I have yet to meet, I look forward to us learning and growing together. The heart of West Islip

is evident in the spirit of collaboration and kindness. I am honored to be part of the West Islip team and entering my next phase of leadership at Manetuck. As principal, it is my intent to preserve the valued traditions of the school community while supporting districtwide initiatives, such as enhancing instruction with the use of Chromebooks and iPads. The Social Brain is a brand new 501(c)(3) non profit in the state of New York. They are on the brink of breaking through as one of the most unique and helpful organizations that serves those suffering from a brain injury. Their mission is to provide brain injury survivors the opportunity to build friendships through socialization and reduced isolation. This organization began in January 2019 when a group of individuals, families and professionals joined together to brainstorm ideas of how they can help brain injury survivors socialize and partake in various hobbies together. Many survivors spend much of their lives in and out of rehab and home feeling isolated, but The Social Brain formed to change that. After hosting various events for survivors such as a day at Sweetbriar Nature Center, a Bowling Event, a Library Day and an afternoon at Four Star Ranch, it was obvious that they were reaching a population in need. Just last month, The Social Brain was granted 501(c)(3) status in the state of New York and they have just started working out of a community center located at 202 Middle Country Road in Middle Island. The Social Brain operates solely on volunteers and their outreach comes not only from word of mouth, but from help through their recent partnerships with local hospitals, school districts, neurology

departments, Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead and St. Joseph’s College. Survivors from all over Long Island are welcome to get involved with The Social Brain. On average, each event they host has about 30-40 participates and there is no age restrictions. If you or someone you know is interested in learning more about or becoming involved with this organization, please contact them today.
