Unfortunately, this all too common problem is even more serious when litter ends up in the Great South Bay, wetlands, streams and other areas of Islip’s local marine environment. One way concerned citizens can help is to form a group, choose a waterway

and participate in the upcoming International Coastal Cleanup. Every year, Keep Islip Clean volunteers join people from around the world to pick up and also collect data on the litter and debris found by waterways. This project is a rare opportunity to remove sources of marine contamination and assist the Ocean Conservancy, which analyzes the data in

Nominations Requested Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter announced today the Town of Islip is currently accepting awards nominations for its first annual Celebration of Italian American Heritage. The Town will celebrate Italian American Heritage 2015 by honoring individuals who have made significant contributions to the Islip community through their professional or volunteer activities. To nominate a
community member please complete and submit a nomination form no later than Monday, September, 14th, 2015. You may obtain a nomination form by visiting the Town of Islip’s website at www. islipny.gov. Shelter’s Choice Fundraiser
The Islip Animal Shelter and Adopt-a-Pet Center hosted their annual Shelter’s Choice Awards fundraiser, sponsored by Live.Love.Bark Dog Rescue, where the adoptable dogs of the shelter walked the doggie red carpet and receive awards in various categories, such as “Sloppiest Kisser,” “Best cuddler” and “Fan Favorite.” This event offered free adoptions to approved applicants, $25 micro-chipping, vendors, food for purchase, a DJ, photobooth, merchandise and raffles. The shelter staff was able to microchip ten dogs, raising $250 for the shelter animals. An additional $1050 was raised in donations by Live.Love. Bark. Three applications for dog adoptions were filed and are currently pending. One dog was reunited with its owners and taken back home. The one bird that the shelter had for adoption was
adopted and went home to its new forever family. “This is a fun event that our shelter hosts that really helps the public see what these adoptable dogs are like outside of the cage. Many individuals, from all over the country, watch these animals on the shelter’s Facebook and social media pages and now they get the chance to meet them all in person, and see how great they truly are,” said Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter. Thirteen dogs, most of whom have been waiting six months or longer for their forever homes, walked the red carpet on Saturday, including Jackson, a Lab/Pit Bull mix, who received the 2015 Shelter Dog of the Year award. Jackson has been at the shelter just shy of one full year. He is referred to as the “shelter superstar” because of his ability to get along with everyone he meets – dogs, cats, and kids included. This award,

ELEMENTARY GRAD - Olivia Brooks, daughter of Douglas and Andrea Brooks of West Islip, graduated from Paul J. Bellew Elementary School. Olivia was recognized for her outstanding achievements in music as a violinist, by her school and NYSSMA. She is the sister of Nathaniel and Ava. By the time you read this, I will have celebrated my 33rd birthday, as momentous an occasion as any, if you ask me. Because, really, every year is a milestone in its own right, a small commemoration of our respective lives as they stand at a given moment in time. Sure, nice round numbers generate parties and extensive recognition; but who’s to say that one year is more significant than the last, or the ones yet to come? As I write this, I am still two days away from officially marking the transition from 32 to 33, but in some ways, I feel like it’s already come and gone. Have you ever noticed that, when someone
asks your age, there is usually a subtle point in time when you’ve mentally moved on? Slightly over the halfway point, “I just turned 32” becomes “I’ll be 33,” and the years somehow meld together as one giant expanse of time. What’s the rush? In my case, anytime my age has occasion to be mentioned, it is usually met with incredulous looks and exclamations of, No way! You’re lying… You can’t be older than 25, maybe. Well, that would be nice and all, but no – I’ve been a member of the 30+ club for a few years now, and I’m still not quite certain what makes that fact so unbelievable to outsiders. Of course, so I’m told,
there will come a day – not too far down the line – where I will learn to greatly appreciate this misconception, and savor the countless times I am asked for I.D. (for scratchoff tickets and Rated-R movies, no less), but not today. Today, I am proud to be (almost) 33, and willing to embrace all that comes with this next year, this next milestone. If we’ve learned anything, it’s that we cannot unwind the clock. Time passes, people come and go, and each day is truly a gift. Neither dwelling on the past nor wishing for the future will change the present. And what a “present” it is. Happy “Day” to all, every day. See you on the flip side.

Alumni Reunion Gather your friends, family and classmates as registration has begun for the second annual SJB Alumni Reunion and Homecoming weekend which is set for October 3rd and 4th. As our alumni group grows close to 17,000 strong, faces may change and campus may look a little different, but the Cougar spirit remains the same! Principal Nan Doherty stated, “We are always thrilled to welcome back our Alumni and look forward to have our current student, families and alumni all together for this weekend.” This two day funfilled celebration will feature social and athletic activities for all alumni with a special invitation to
the Classes of 1970, 1975, 1980, 1985, 1990, 1995, 2000, 2005 and 2010, who will be celebrating their milestone reunions! The Alumni Weekend Reunion & Homecoming Schedule is as follows (all events to take place on Campus) Milestone Reunion Reception for the Classes of: 1970, 1975, 1980, 1985, 1990, 1995, 2000, 2005 & 2010 Saturday, October 3rd from 7 to 11 p.m. Cougar Café (cafeteria) Includes open bar, buffet dinner, passed hors d’oeuvres, DJ, school tours. $45 per person; $85 per couple *** Homecoming All Alumni, Families and Friends
