Library Funding Assemblywoman Christine Pellegrino announced that the North Babylon and West Islip public libraries will receive $90,000 in state aid. “Public libraries are crucial resources for our communities,” said Assemblywoman Pellegrino, who taught reading in Baldwin public schools for over 18 years. “They not only provide access to books, online resources and vital services like classes and job search assistance, but they
also help shape our lives. Libraries foster a love of reading and learning at a young age, and continue to be a resource throughout our lives. This significant boost in funding will help these community hubs thrive for years to come.” The funding provides $15,000 for North Babylon Public Library to create additional parking spaces and $75,000 for West Islip Public Library to add a new instructional room and
reading space. “These new areas improve upon the library’s ability to provide space for activities and community programs, as well as creating a comfortable environment for independent reading and study, two goals that have become increasingly important in our service plan,” West Islip Public Library director Andrew Hamm said. “These improvements further the ability of community members to utilize their local library more effectively.”

Scanlon’s Traveling Salon is run by Eileen Scanlon, a fellow New Yorker and Licensed Cosmetologist, whose mission is to cultivate a community based on kindness, respect and equality. With its catchy slogan, Where Style Comes to You, Scanlon’s Traveling Salon serves an abundance of people across Long Island. As a licensed hair professional, Eileen has a following of paying customers, but her real passion lies with helping those who are not able to afford a haircut or hair process. Some of the communities that Eileen serves are: seniors at home, the home confined, hospice, sober houses and those who are differently abled. She always travels to her customers so they can enjoy her services in the comfort of their home or living space, and she incorporates her love of social justice and advocacy into her business practice by using only vegan products. Another unique niche that her traveling salon taps into is serving those who may have specific allergies or reactions to different products used in salons. By traveling to her clients, Eileen can ensure that they will only be surrounded by products they feel comfortable with. If you wish to get involved with Scanlon’s Traveling Salon, you can! Recycling Efforts was being recycled and emptied it into the school paper recycling container. For the year, the Oquenock students recycled half a ton of paper. In addition to recycling paper, Oquenock also participated in the annual New York Recycles poster contest held by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, and the students recycled their empty cans and bottles. The school PTA’s Green Team collected and recycled over 3,500 cans and bottles, earning $175 for use in furthering the school’s recycling efforts. Through their participation in recycling, Oquenock’s students are being educated on the value of caring for their community and the environment, teaching them to be responsible citizens.

West Islip’s Oquenock Elementary School displayed a commitment to the environment throughout the school year, kicking off with an assembly featuring Town of Islip recycling educator Danielle Wynn, who discussed the importance of waste reduction and recycling with the students, followed by the implementation of a schoolwide paper recycling program led by the students. In every classroom, the children learned to separate their paper waste to be recycled, with custodian Brian Malone ensuring that the program ran smoothly. When the classroom paper recycling bins became full, the students were responsible for bringing their bins to a central dumping location in the school to empty them out. Malone then weighed the paper to record how much

Birthdays are beginnings. This is a sentiment I have always held particularly close to my heart, if for no other reason than it allows for the momentary illusion of a fresh start, at least for one day. What evolves beyond that point in time is anyone’s guess of course; but the symbolic turning of the page is one that resonates quite deeply for me. This year’s birthday falls within an interval of time that is especially significant, the start of a completely new chapter in my life. After 13 years as editor of South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers and Seasons Magazine, I will be leaving my position to pursue a new adventure at the close of the month, taking my love of writing to the next level and exploring the vast opportunities that await just around the bend. Change is never easy, least of all for someone with my affinity for routine and structure; but, as with all things, sometimes fate takes a hand and points you in a direction you never thought possible. Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter congratulated Town Clerk Olga Murray, and Deputy Town Clerk Patricia Curci on the office’s recent recognition from the Department of State. The Islip Town Clerks’ office, specifically Patricia Curci, Deputy Town Clerk, was awarded an Outstanding Acceptance Facility Oversight Review for maintaining compliance with all regulations as required by the Passport Agent’s Reference Guide. The Islip Town Clerk’s office facilitated over 3,000 passports in 2017, up 33% from 2016. The office processed exactly 3,246 passports in 2017, and is on track to see a 30% increase in 2018 as well. “Our staff has been working tirelessly on the increased customer service needs due to the rising passport demands,” said Town Clerk Olga Murray. “The success of the program is due to the leadership of Deputy Town Clerk, Patricia Curci,” added the Town Clerk. The Department of State report noted that the Islip Town Clerk’s staff “… displayed a sincere and earnest dedication to the passport program...” “I’m grateful for this award,” said Deputy Town Clerk Patricia Curci. We have a dedicated staff, many of whom are bilingual, and we take great pride in the level of customer service our office provides,” she added. “The Town’s passport facility recently began offering evening hours to accommodate the working population,” said Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter. The Town Clerk, Deputy and their staff are truly deserving of this special recognition,” she said.
