The county has made about 8.5 acres of land available for them, which their railroad operates on. In fulﬁllment of the public trust use of park land, Long Island Live Steamers hosts visitor rides on our Public Run Days typically scheduled for the second and last Sundays of each month from the middle of May through the end of October. The hours of operation during a public run day are 10:30AM-3PM. There is no charge for rides on Run Days, however they accept donations of any size. Their operation is solely funded by donations.

Located in Southaven County Park in Brookhaven (between exits 57 & 58 off Route 27 or exit 67 off the LIE) is the home of Long Island Live Steamers, a 501(c)3 nonproﬁt organization. Keep Islip Clean Main Street Cleanup

A warm and sunny weekend was the perfect backdrop for an Islip Main Street Cleanup sponsored by Keep Islip Clean. The ambitious cleaning along Main Street and the surrounding areas drew over 60 volunteers, who collected supplies and were given cleanup locations to tackle. The project was an initiative of veteran KIC volunteer and Islip resident Rebecca Rowsell, who has participated in numerous cleanups prior to leading her first endeavor as a KIC

Team Captain. “It was inspiring to see not only the large number of volunteers, but the different groups drawn to the project,” said KIC Executive Director Nancy Cochran. “We had scouting troops, Bank of America employees, KIC Junior Commissioners and community residents,” she added. Prior to the cleanup, volunteers met with Suffolk County Legislator Tom Cilmi, Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter

and Islip Town Councilman James O’Connor, who all encouraged and thanked the group. Also on hand were KIC Chairman Emeritus Kay Erwood, Chairman Tiffany DiBenedetto and Islip/Special Project Commissioner Gene Murphy, representing KIC leaders in Islip. The cleanup netted about 15 bags of trash, but left behind a sense of community and satisfaction for the scores of participants.

The food supply at food banks historically drops off in summertime. Coupled with the pandemic and its after-effects, replenishing the diminishing food supply at this time is even more urgent. Enter Power to Feed Long Island – a partnership between Island Harvest Food Bank and PSEG Long Island to rally the Long Island community to donate food to support neighbors facing food insecurity. Continuing through the end of September, there will be largescale collection drives at several local supermarkets, with a goal of restocking warehouse shelves with the equivalent of 21,000 nutritious meals (for 2021). At all locations, there will be a contactless drive-thru area, as well as collection bins, set up

Suffolk County Legislature Requests First Fire Island Sewage Solutions Study Legislator Steven J. Flotteron along with Citizens Campaign for the Environment Executive Director Adrienne Esposito lead the initiative for federal, state, and local leaders and stakeholder organizations working collaboratively for three years to assess the wastewater management needs of Fire Island. Today, members of the Coalition for Fire Island Wastewater Solutions gathered at the Bay Shore Marina to announce a resolution for a grant to

the Citizens Campaign for the Environment to fund the first ever Fire Island Wastewater Solutions Planning & Engineering Study. This plan will be a crucial first step towards solving the unique challenges facing Fire Island’s wastewater management needs. Fire Island has only one small sewage treatment plant in the Village of Ocean Beach, therefore most residents and numerous tourists rely on antiquated septic and cesspool systems.

These aging systems contribute to water quality impairments, harmful algal blooms, and loss of fisheries in the surrounding waterways, including Great South Bay and Shinnecock Bay. “Now we can take the first step towards understanding the extent of the Fire Island nitrogen pollution problem and finding solutions that protect our waterways, fisheries, community, and our tourism industry,” said Legislator Flotteron.

The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad

cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the
