Childcare To Become More Affordable For Many Low And Moderate Income Families

Suffolk County residents got a boost in paying for childcare. Beginning August 1, 2022, as part of the 202223 New York State budget, families earning up to 300 percent of the federal poverty level will qualify for assistance. Previously, the income standard set by the State for childcare subsidies was 200 percent. Assistance will be administered locally by the Suffolk and Nassau counties departments of Social Services. “A strong childcare system helps buttress a strong economy,” said Adrian Fassett, C.E.O. of the Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk, Inc., a Patchogue-based not-forprofit that own and operates Way to Grow Child Care Learning Center in East Patchogue. “The reality is that working people can’t get to their jobs if they don’t have a quality, safe place to send their children. More workers are returning to an office setting following more than two years of working from home and we need to do all we can to ensure they have access to excellent childcare.” According to the Governor’s office, thousands of families will now be eligible for childcare subsidies as part of a $7 billion expansion of childcare funding in New York State. “I know firsthand how a lack of childcare can hurt

your career, your family and your future, as a working mother when I was forced to leave my job to care for my child,” Governor Hochul said. “These historic investments in New York State’s childcare system will allow us to forge a new path forward for parents, especially mothers. It is the right thing to do, the moral thing to do, and will supercharge our economic recovery and support working families. Childcare is an essential service, and in New York, we will continue to do everything in our power to make sure more working families have access to it.” Parents can be eligible if they are employed and earn no more than the 300 percent threshold, are enrolled in an education or training program, in mental

health or substance abuse treatment, or are in an emergency situation of short duration. For example, a family of four can earn up to $83,250 annually and still be eligible for subsidized childcare. Mr. Weber’s class recently learned about the effects of temperature and density on flight as they launched five student-created hot air balloons. Students in Mrs. Duthie’s Italian cooking class made their own meatballs from scratch. The students also made pasta, pizza and tiramisu while learning cooking techniques and safety in the kitchen. Technical assistance has also been provided to address sales and profit deficiencies, closure rates and other barriers to business growth while overseeing partnerships with foundations and universities to provide capacity building. Additionally, the initiative has helped many business owners acquire MWBE certification by providing assistance in acquiring necessary certification and bonding while also promoting partnerships between Town and minority consultants, contractors,

NAACP LI Regional Director Tracey Edwards. “The program aims to remove all obstacles, close the revenue gap, and create more paths of entrepreneurship through innovation and partnership. What the Babylon IDA has launched is an effective model of a community-driven strategy that should be used across New York State.” Contributing greatly to this development has been an ongoing series of educational events and training resources for business owners. This fall, the initiative will host a bootcamp series focusing on business development and social media marketing. There are also numerous B2B Minority, Women and Veteran networking event series being planned to help entrepreneurs make the business connections that can support and elevate their businesses. The Babylon IDA is hopeful and encouraged that two other IDA’s in the state have reached out to learn more about replicating this program in their region. “If we can make this program a statewide staple, its potential for not only helping improve the economy, but the lives of so many new and existing business owners is limitless,” said Matt McDonough, Special Counsel to the Babylon IDA. “We encourage our counterparts in IDAs throughout the state as well as the state legislature to make this issue a priority. In the two years since the Babylon Industrial Development Agency (IDA) launched its Economic Inclusion Initiative during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the effort has grown into a model of success for others to follow. The program, which is aimed at supporting and elevating Minority, Women and Veteran Business Enterprise entrepreneurs within the Town of Babylon, has helped dozens of dedicated entrepreneurs connect to financial, technical and legal assistance, with many starting new businesses or getting MWBE certified in the process. “The purpose of this effort was to focus on entrepreneurs within the Town that were primed for success but didn’t have all the tools or resources to do so,” said Tom Dolan, CEO of the Babylon IDA. “Helping to fill these common gaps, which are hurdles to success, was our main objective and with the results we have seen from this program’s infancy tell us we are onto something revolutionary. It is our hope that with some additional funding, we can

Babylon Soldier Ride Back In Action for First Time Since 2019

On Friday, July 15, 2022, the Town of Babylon welcomed the Wounded Warrior Project back to Town Hall for the 15th annual Babylon Soldier Ride. Hosted by Councilman and Veterans Advisory Chair DuWayne Gregory, this was the first time in two years that the town has been able to host a full community ride as was done prior to the pandemic. This year, the town helped raise over $100,000 for the Wounded Warrior Project with some of the proceeds going to Project9Line, an Islip-based nonprofit that serves veterans here in Suffolk County. About 30

wounded warriors from across the country, and over 1,000 members of our community participated in the 25-mile ride from Babylon Town Hall in Lindenhurst to Overlook Beach out on the barrier island. Among the riders was Supervisor Schaffer, Councilman Gregory, and many of our government partners from the county and state. “It is crucial for us to provide support for the brave men and women who have risked so much for our freedom,” said Councilman DuWayne Gregory. “The pandemic forced us to reduce the size and capacity

of this event over the last two years, but as you can see by the amount raised and the turnout of riders, the support for our nation’s veterans is as strong as it has ever been here in the Town of Babylon,” he added. The Babylon Town Board extends its sincere gratitude to all the members of the Babylon workforce who make the event possible. A special thank you goes to the law enforcement agencies that assist in this group effort, the Suffolk County Police Department; New York State Police; the Amityville Police Department; and all of our volunteer fire and rescue personnel.

This organization thrives because of its volunteers, who do the heavy lifting of taking care of the emotional and tangible needs of families who depend on their hospitality while their child receives life-saving medical treatment. Ruth Signorelli of Sayville, NY has volunteered with RMHC at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital for the last two-plus years, pushing the colorful “Hospitality à la Carte” cart, delivering much-needed toiletries, snacks, games, books and toys to parents and children in their hospital room. Always arriving at “just the right time”, the volunteers and treats on the cart give an added boost of joy to the day!

This means checking the shingles to see if any are loose or if any are blown off. If you do see that your roof needs work you must get this fixed as soon as possible. The next aspect of your home you should check is your gutters. Make sure they are cleaned, and water is able to fill up and be diverted away from your house. Make sure that the downspouts to your gutters are pointed away from the foundation of your home and are clear for water to flow through easily. If gutters are not able to keep a constant flow of water away from your home the facia that the gutters are attached to will rot and your gutters may fall off due to the excessive water that is filling them and the weakened fascia that is caused by the excessive water damage. Finally, make sure that all of your windows and doors are able to lock & are air-tight so no water is able to infiltrate through these openings. You may also want to check your window wells if you have them. Make sure that the soil is loose and able to absorb water so no flooding can occur. Shinnecock Bay Recognized As A New Global “Hope Spot” Shinnecock Bay on the south shore of Long Island, New York, is being named a new “Hope Spot” by Mission Blue, an international organization that supports the protection of oceans worldwide. This distinction is the result of a decade of restorative and scientific work co-led by Ellen Pikitch, Ph.D., Christopher Gobler, Ph.D. and Bradley Peterson, Ph.D. in the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (SoMAS) at Stony Brook University. Hope Spots are iconic ocean regions that stand out as some of the most pristine on the globe. This places Shinnecock Bay in a league with internationally-recognized locations such as The Galapagos Islands, the Sargasso Sea, and the Ross Sea in Antarctica. The bay is the first Hope Spot in New York State, the only one near a major metropolitan region, and one of only three others on the Eastern Seaboard of the U.S. Dr. Sylvia Earle, founder of Mission Blue, says, “What a concept, in the shadow of one of the most densely populated parts of the planet – New York City! While New York conjures up visions of skyscrapers and crowded streets, it is a great ocean state with

a significant coastline, a rich maritime heritage and growing opportunities to view ocean wildlife from the shores and in the water.” At a recent event in New York City, Mission Blue and its founder, the internationally renowned marine biologist Sylvia Earle, officially named Shinnecock Bay as a Hope Spot. Pikitch, on behalf of the Institute for Ocean Conservation Science, nominated the bay for this global recognition and Ted Janulis, on behalf of The Explorers Club, served as second nominator. The official naming took place at The Explorers Club and acknowledged the work of Pikitch and her colleagues at Stony Brook University’s SoMAS, where a team of scientists, educators and students worked together to revive the health, biodiversity, and aquaculture potential of Shinnecock Bay. “The Hope Spot distinction for this unique bay on Long Island is the result of meticulous work and proof that the Shinnecock Bay Restoration Program has succeeded in bringing the bay back to the healthier state it was in many decades ago,” says Pikitch, the Endowed Professor of Ocean Conservation

NEW GLOBAL “HOPE SPOT” - Shinnecock Bay on Long Island’s south shore has been named a global Hope Spot after successful restoration efforts over the past decade and its healthy and diverse natural conditions and wildlife. Science at Stony Brook University and SoMAS, and Director of the Institute for Ocean Conservation Science. “Shinnecock Bay is arguably the healthiest bay in New York State, and our work demonstrates that people can reverse the damage done through nature based, scientifically guided restoration,” she continued. “We hope and expect that designation of Shinnecock Bay as a Hope Spot will inspire others to take action to restore other

places to their original beauty, biodiversity, and health.” Shinnecock Bay is a highly productive estuary that is approximately 122 kilometers from New York City. The bay is a hidden gem of biodiversity that covers an area of 40 square kilometers and consists of 9,000 acres of open water, salt marshes, intertidal flats, and seagrass beds. These habitats serve as important nursery, feeding, and breeding grounds for many species.

Additionally, the Shinnecock Bay area and surrounding lands has a long history to the Shinnecock Nation, whose reservation is located on the far eastern part of the bay. Leaders of the Shinnecock Nation have endorsed the designation of Shinnecock Bay as a Hope Spot. The creation of “hard clam sanctuaries” in western Shinnecock Bay is a pivotal part of the restoration effort of the SoMAS Stony Brook

University team. As a result of this work the dangerous brown and red tides that had been occurring annually have not been observed for several years. Landings of hard clams outside the sanctuaries have increased dramatically and are at a level not seen since the mid-1980’s. And, numbers of fish in the bay, most notably forage fishes such as bay anchovy and menhaden, have escalated.

Identity Theft Prevention Tips (NAPSI)-A recent online survey by Toluna/Greenfield Online, Inc. found that while most consumers try to protect their identity, many admitted to risky behavior that could put them at risk for ID theft. To help educate and protect consumers, world-renowned fraud prevention expert Frank Abagnale offers these tips: • Shop smart: Limit the credit cards you carry. •Keep receipts and check your statements: Examine every charge on your statement before paying. Your receipts provide a great cross-reference check and guard against suspicious activity. You have 30 days from the date of your statement to notify your financial institution of any discrepancies; otherwise, you can be liable for any purchases. • Protect your computer when online shopping: Make sure your security patch and anti-virus software are updated regularly. Consider technology to protect against potential viruses. • Watch where you shop online: Look for the lock icon on the site’s browser status bar, a sign that that site is safe. If you have never heard of a website before, see if it has security precautions in place and isn’t a fake site set up by identity thieves. •Don’t write checks: Give cash or gift cards. The information on a check— name, signature, address—can be used to steal identity. •Strengthen passwords: Use passwords with at least eight characters, including a combination of letters, numbers and symbols that are easy for you to remember but difficult for predators to guess. • Watch your wallet: Be careful at parties, restaurants, fitness clubs, shopping carts and your car. • Don’t take the bait on phishing scams: Also, beware of shoulder surfing (when a thief looks over your shoulder while you’re at an ATM, either directly or via a camera). • Stop mail and newspaper delivery when you’ll be away from home. • Consider an identity theft protection service: One low-cost solution monitors the online criminal underground where identities are bought and sold and instantly alerts you if your Social Security number or up to 10 credit card or debit card numbers are posted by thieves. The service also scans online directories and search engines, prime sources for spammers and thieves, letting you know where your information is available, and provides advice on how to remove it.

“Lucky” 13th Annual Over 50 Fair Returns To Its Original Location The Over 50 Fair is excited to be back at its original location, the beautiful Melville Marriott, after being at two other venues for the last several years. This year’s event, its “lucky” 13th annual, on Sunday, September 18 from 10 AM -4:30 PM, will offer Baby Boomers, seniors and more opportunities to meet with exhibitors and attend classes geared toward them. The Over 50 Fair annually entertains and educates hundreds of Long Islanders. Each year, several dozen businesses and non-profits promote local products and services, including health and wellness, education, travel, and financial services, plus some less expected, such as a hypnotist and psychics. Some of this year’s 20+ classes include “How to Improve Your Dating and Sex Life After 50” by Maureen Tara Nelson,

“Reiki” with Janis Abrams of Gentle Soul Discoveries, and “Organizing Your Entire Home” by Tina O’Keeffe of Stow and Behold. Additional classes will include Igniting Business After 50, a comedy show, and Immune System Boosting. This event has built a loyal following due to its consistent presentation of various classes, products, and services they find appealing. Feedback from the attendees and exhibitors after the 2021 event was very positive. Steven Duncan of New Hyde Park, a four time Over 50 Fair attendee, said that “[my] wife and I had a wonderful time visiting the vendors and attending classes.” Attendee Bill S. of Hicksville, a three time attendee, shared that it was a “very nice fair” and that the vendors did a “very good job.” He was pleased that the Over 50 Fair was “live, as it should be, not

virtually.” In the Singles Lounge sponsored by MTN Matchmaking, singles will once again have the opportunity to relax, mingle, and perhaps meet their “special someone.” A new addition is a free photo booth, compliments of Event Pros. Over 50 Fair is the brainchild of East Hills resident Barbara Kaplan,

who also coordinates the hugely successful All Kids Fair each April. She said that the Over 50 Fair is “Overflowing with Opportunities for Age 50+.” “Our attendees enjoy the opportunity to meet with many experts in their fields all in one place,” she said. Many local beauty queens from the Ms. New York Senior America pageant attend every year, including
