Fusion Yogurt And Bowls Fusion Yogurt and Bowls, formerly Swirls and Twirls of West Islip, is located at 494 Union Boulevard in West Islip and is co-owned by Al Matzelle and Stuart Millman. The owners say they were drawn to this business because ice cream and frozen yogurt make people happy. Kids come into their store happy in anticipation of a delicious frozen treat and they leave just as happy, but with traces of the treat on their face. It is truly a win-win business. The store is self-serve style, where the customer is always in control of what they want and how much they want to pay simply by how much they put into their cup. The store serves an expanding menu of
items from ice cream and frozen yogurt to sundaes, cakes, pies, milkshakes, smoothies, acai and pitaya bowls, waffles, crepes, french toast, mac and cheese, brownies and a 10” pretzel, plus they have over 50 toppings to choose from every single day! The Charity of the Month for August is: The Social Brain www.facebook.com/socialbrainny
The Social Brain is a brand new 501(c)(3) non profit in the state of New York. They are on the brink of breaking through as one of the most unique and helpful organizations that serves those suffering from a brain injury. Their mission is to provide brain injury survivors the opportunity to build friendships through socialization and reduced isolation. This organization began in January 2019 when a group of individuals, families and professionals joined together to brainstorm ideas of how they can help brain injury survivors socialize and partake in various hobbies together. Many survivors spend much of their lives in and out of rehab and home feeling isolated, but The Social Brain formed to change that. After hosting various events for survivors such as a day at Sweetbriar Nature Center, a Bowling Event, a Library Day and an afternoon at Four Star Ranch, it was obvious that they were reaching a population in need. Just last month, The Social Brain was granted 501(c)(3) status in the state of New York and they have just started working out of a community center located at 202 Middle Country Road in Middle Island. The Social Brain operates solely on volunteers and their outreach comes not only from word of mouth, but from help through their recent partnerships with local hospitals, school districts, neurology departments, Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead and St. Joseph’s College. Survivors from all over Long Island are welcome to get involved with The Social Brain. On average, each event they host has about 30-40 participates and there is no age restrictions. Recently a 4-week session hosted by The Social Brain and Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead started to help survivors learn social skills, build friendships, find cues from others and interact with peers. The first session was on August 6th and the following 3 sessions will be on August 13th, 20th and 27th. Age groups are broken down from ages 5-7, 8-12, teens and adults. information. On August 16th at 6:30PM, The Social Brain is hosting a “Basket Night Fundraiser” at the Sound Beach Property Owners Association. This will be fun night with 250 plus baskets and prizes being raffled off; top raffles include brand new bicycles from Walmart and an overnight stay at Gurney’s in Montauk. All are welcome to attend! If you bring school supplies to be donated, you will receive a single raffle ticket for each item you donate. Additionally, on September 22nd all are welcome to come support this organization and enjoy an afternoon out at the ballpark with family and friends! The Social Brain is hosting a day at the ballpark to watch the Long Island Ducks game at 1:35PM. Tickets are $15.00 a person and parking is free. There will be a pre-game autograph session with all players on the field and children will be able to run the bases post game. Lastly, the Social Brain is available to attend group meetings to speak about head injury prevention. Science research students from West Islip High School, Beach Street Middle School and Udall Road Middle School recently presented their culminating research projects at the annual West Islip Research Symposium. In attendance was New York State Assemblyman Mike LiPetri, who
commended the students for their outstanding work. Research seniors, many of whom participated in the program for all four years of high school, discussed their experiences, including work they performed as part of the SPARK program at Brookhaven National Laboratory and
the Barcode Long Island program at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, as well as research they conducted in the high school’s research lab. The night culminated in a poster session where all students presented their research findings.
The Students with HEARTT community group at West Islip High School recently hosted a “senior” prom for senior citizens. The students brought flowers, played trivia games, danced and chatted with the seniors. “Coming together as a group and putting smiles
on people’s faces felt really good,” said Class of 2019 graduate Kaeligh Grossman. “We definitely accomplished what we wanted to achieve and that’s something I’m so proud of.” “Learning can take place all around us, not just in the classroom,” said

A Night Of Celebrations During the Babylon School District Board of Education meeting held on June 10, several staff members and students were recognized for their efforts.
To begin the night’s recognitions, Babylon Junior-Senior High School student Tara O’Rourke was presented with a token of appreciation in honor of
being awarded the Long Island Special Education Administrator Association Jodi Shapiro Memorial Scholarship. Additionally, Babylon Junior-Senior High

A number of Babylon Junior-Senior High School student-delegates dedicated their time toward reporting on school news during the board of education meetings which took place throughout the 201819 school year. For their efforts, they were presented with tokens of appreciation courtesy of the board of education. Babylon Junior-Senior High School Class of 2019 valedictorian Dylan Pané and salutatorian Pavani Kumar were recognized
for their accomplishments. Both students obtained this high honor for their exceptional academic record, commitment to success and diligent learning throughout their careers at the Babylon Junior-Senior High School. Babylon Junior-Senior High School mathematics teacher Robert Richardelli, who received the New York State Senate District 4 Teacher of the Year Award, was presented with a token of appreciation in recognition of his excellent teaching methods. Babylon School District Board of Education trustee Dominic P. Bencivenga, who recently concluded his tenure as a member the board, was presented
with an engraved plaque commemorating his nine years of service. Additionally, a number of staff members spanning all district buildings were presented as candidates for tenure, and were congratulated by all in attendance for their stunning accomplishment.
