In honor of our retro-themed newspaper issue, I decided to spotlight an older article I wrote last year. The article is below and is about an eco-friendly non-profit on Long Island that strives to help conserve our island. Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is a non-profit volunteer ran organization that is committed to improving the quality of life on Long Island Shores. Their mission is to provide a low cost solution to the growing problem of waterfront pollution through public awareness, community action and your participation. S.P.L.A.S.H. stands for Stop Polluting, Littering and Save Harbors.

They have rescued 2,498,267 pounds of trash from our waters in 28 years! The amazing impact that Long Island Waterways sees from the work of Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is something each of us should be thankful for! They have 7 boats that go out in our waterways to patrol and pickup trash and debris between March and November. All of the boats are operated by volunteer captains and crews that give their time to go out on clean-up trips. Clean-up trips usually last about 3 hours. After their boats are taken out of the water for the season, they bring them back to their Freeport headquarters and immediately start to work on them to get them ready for the next season.

St. Mark’s Episcopal Church Thrift Shop: Good Community Resident Suffolk County residents got to visit a beloved old friend whom they hadn’t seen in months due to Covid-19 closures. People traveled from all over the county, as well as some from as far away as Nassau, Queens and Brooklyn, to purchase clothing, toys, shoes and other items. It was the first open-air Thrift Shop at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 754 Montauk Highway in

Islip, held on July 25. The next open-air sale will be August 15. Until further notice, the thrift shop will be held outdoors, “until the Bishop says otherwise,” said St. Mark’s Rector, The Very Reverend Richard E. Simpson. He added that he hopes to do it periodically while the weather holds; for more information, call the church office at 631-5814950. As always, masks and

social distancing are required. The St. Mark’s Thrift Shop has a storied history. Started 40 years ago by one person, it was a tiny, 300-square-foot space located in an office corner. To enter, you had to go through a side door and walk down a long hallway. What you see now was the rector’s garage. As the St. Mark’s Thrift Shop became more well-known, it grew to

approximately 3700-squarefeet that includes floor space and a separate storage and work area. The area that was once the rector’s garage was given to the Thrift Shop when Father Simpson joined St. Mark’s in the early 2000s. It is now the main entrance, facing the driveway. Sales doubled, tripled and sometimes even quadrupled every ten years. All sales proceeds go to the church and its outreach programs. It is here that Father Simpson is quick to add that the store frequently gives away more than it sells. “Our Thrift Shop has ongoing outreach to those in need. We give items to the

Boy Scouts; other churches, such as Christ Church in Brentwood, Big Brothers and Big Sisters; The Disabled American Vet and the DSS voucher program. He continued: “We also give to Southside Hospital. Patients often come in and have to have clothes cut off, so now they’d have something to wear home.” The all-volunteer staff mans the store, continually straightens merchandise, sorts and re-stocks shelves at least twice a day. A complete seasonal changeover takes place twice a year. Young children always get a free book. “I like coming here

because it feels like I’m going to Macys or some other retail outlet, not a thrift store,” two ladies were once overheard whispering. St. Marks is known for community outreach “ Our pre-Thanksgiving dinner (Cancelled this year due to Covid-19) has become a source of comfort, especially to the elderly who may not have any family. Every year, we create Easter baskets, conduct Christmas toy drives, as well as outreach for school supplies, warm clothing, and personal and household items for those leaving shelters to set up a new home for the first time, “ said Father Simpson.
