tudents at West Islip’s Manetuck Elementary School raised a total of $4,521.92 during the past school year for the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation, culminating in Manetuck’s 14th annual seal release last month. The seal was injured and rehabilitated at the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation before being released back into the wild at Robert Moses.

CLEARING THE SHELTERS - The Islip Town Animal Shelter recently participated in a nationwide “Clear the Shelters” event, which was sponsored in part by NBC Universal. More than 30 animal shelters in the New York Tri-State area teamed up with hundreds of animal shelters across the country to find new homes for thousands of homeless pets. Participating shelters offered incentives such as no-cost or reduced fee adoptions to attract potential adoptees. The Islip Animal Shelter offered to waive the adoption fee for anyone wishing to adopt on that day. In all, fourteen dogs, one cat and one bird were adopted.

Keep Islip Clean, a certified affiliate of the national organization Keep America Beautiful, is a not-for-profit, 501c3, community service organization. In addition to the children’s garden, other improvements include replanting an existing meadow bed as a 200 square foot pollinator garden. Ultimately, these special plants will be distributed to Project Bloom groups with the goal of establishing 30 more pollinator gardens. Informational signs installed in the gardens will educate the public about the role these types of plants play in maintaining a healthy environment by supporting the health of bees, butterflies, birds, bats and other pollinators. The last several years have seen an ambitious expansion of Project Bloom under the stewardship of Master Gardener Kathy VanDyke and her husband, Bob. With their knowledgeable direction, scores of volunteers have donated many hours to create a new landscape for the benefit of the public. “We were thrilled to receive the grant from Scotts to support our garden projects at Project Bloom,” said Kathy. “As a volunteer organization with very limited funding, this grant award will go a long way towards establishing new gardens and creating educational signs.”

A children’s garden and pollinator garden created by Project Bloom volunteers will expand and thrive thanks to a recent $500 grant designed to support community “greenspace” development. Project Bloom, a community beautification program, was one of approximately 100 organizations across the U.S. chosen for the Scotts Miracle-Gro Company’s GRO1000 initiative encouraging garden builds. It is part of a broader initiative designed to create 1,000 gardens and greenspaces throughout the U.S., Canada and Europe for the Company’s 150th anniversary in 2018. Keep Islip Clean (KIC) and the Islip Parks Department launched Project Bloom 23 years ago under the direction of volunteers from Cornell Cooperative Extension’s Master Gardener Program. Volunteers still meet each spring at the circa 1920 greenhouse on the grounds of Brookwood Hall in East Islip. Volunteer gardeners grow and supply about 30 local KIC volunteer groups with over 6,000 free plants that are used to beautify public spaces throughout the Town of Islip. The GRO1000 grant will help expand a newly renovated community vegetable garden to include 100 square feet for a children’s “Victory Garden,” a new pumpkin/ watermelon patch and a new berry bed with a bird bath. As of this writing, I have published 573 columns. During the course of those, it has often occurred to me that some – mainly those with more of a personal touch – would make a solid foundation for a mini-memoir of sorts, a highlight reel of those experiences which have shaped the last decade or so of my life. I recently took the time to scan through each one, briefly, with an eye on setting aside those which I felt were, at the very least, worth a second look. It’s amazing, when you read them one after another, how the narrative weaves together, providing a glimpse into whatever happened to be my thoughts at that particular moment in time. Sure, there were the fluffy, filler-type accounts of seasons changing and deadlines crunching, of miscellaneous

musings on life, and people; random rants and reader feedback. But among the hundreds were some solid accounts of current events, heartfelt profiles of loved ones, and momentous occasions in my life. And, of course, we can’t forget about Buddy’s 20 or so contributions to the cause, perhaps better suited for an illustrated children’s series in his own right. (We do know how he hates to share the spotlight.) This initial scan was just the first step; but, after two days of skimming, I had set aside close to one hundred of my favorites. Not a bad beginning. My hope, over time, is to provide the narration necessary to connect the dots, perhaps throw in some favorite quotations, photography to illustrate the progression… and see where it winds up.

Rallying for Release Students at West Islip’s Manetuck Elementary School raised a total of $4,521.92 during the past school year for the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation, culminating in Manetuck’s 14th annual seal release last month. The seal was injured and rehabilitated at the Riverhead Foundation

for Marine Research and Preservation before being released back into the wild at Robert Moses Beach. The students raised the money with a schoolwide “Rallying for Riverhead” event, earning donations from sponsors every lap that they walked around the school’s bus circle. The top three earned the chance to raise the door on the seal’s

cage for its release. During the rally, facilitated by teachers Kerri Ierardi and Sue Marullo, the importance of marine research and preservation was discussed in the classrooms, and each student at Manetuck created a work of art related to marine life for display art teacher Tom McGunnigle.
