updates to address PSEG Long Island’s response in the event of a failure of critical systems. Since last August, PSEG Long Island has conducted three drills of these procedures with its dedicated workforce. Electric Infrastructure Improvements Across Long Island and the Rockaways, PSEG Long Island has prepared the electric infrastructure by focusing on substation, and transmission and distribution improvements, as well as circuit and equipment inspections using drones, helicopters and infrared technology. PSEG Long Island’s recent infrastructure improvements include: New transformers installed in Elmont, Uniondale, Culloden Point, Roslyn, Far Rockaway and Flowerfield substations to provide additional capacity during peak demand 4 new distribution feeder lines installed in Elmont, Uniondale, Roslyn and Flowerfield areas to accommodate load growth 6 distribution circuits upgraded in Kings Point, North Hills, Massapequa, Mitchel Gardens, Lake Success and Rockaway Beach to improve circuit reliability 37 transmission system circuit breakers added or replaced for enhanced system reliability A new transmission circuit installed between the Riverhead and Canal substation A transmission circuit upgraded between the Wildwood and Riverhead substations Storm Hardening Programs Completed Since the implementation of the FEMA-funded stormhardening program funded in 2014, PSEG Long Island has completed storm hardening and reliability work on more than 450 miles of distribution mainline circuits. Stormhardened circuits have seen a significant reduction in
storm damage and 42% fewer outages. PSEG Long Island is proud to continue its storm hardening work with Power On, an initiative started in the spring of 2020 that will continue to improve reliability by strengthening distribution lines, targeting the most vulnerable circuits across Long Island and the Rockaways. Since the launch, an additional 59 miles of distribution mainline circuits have been storm hardened with stronger poles, thicker wire and other modern equipment. Work on the first circuits began in April 2020 and will continue over the next five years. To further protect against storm damage to the energy grid, arborists from PSEG Long Island’s Tree Trimming program work throughout the year to identify and trim tree limbs in rights of way and along easements that could potentially cause outages during or after a storm. In 2020, PSEG Long Island removed more than 8,000 hazardous trees and/or large limbs along the distribution and transmission system and trimmed 2,400 miles of distribution and transmission line clearance in accordance with the industry best practice clearance standard. This standard preserves the health of the tree and directs future growth away from power lines. In addition, a new vine mitigation program identified, cut and treated more than 4,000 vine locations across Long Island and the Rockaways. PSEG Long Island also prepares its dedicated workforce for summer by conducting annual hurricane and tropical storm drills and employee training; by developing emergency summer operating plans; and by performing summerpeak reliability analyses to ensure there is sufficient capacity to meet electric demand on high-heat days.

Bellew Elementary School, recently won second place in the Suffolk County American Legion’s Americanism poster contest. Fourth and fifth graders from the school had submitted artwork for the competition on the theme “The American Flag and What It Means to Me,” demonstrating how they can be patriotic, freedom-loving and proud of their country. PSEG Long Island is prepared for hurricane season and to meet peak demand during extreme heat situations this summer. The company’s ongoing system improvements and enhancements to the grid help provide electric reliability to Long Island and the Rockaways throughout the year. Since last August, PSEG Long Island has incorporated numerous enhancements and upgrades to the electric grid, its systems and its storm processes, including its contingency procedures. PSEG Long Island’s systems have undergone upgrades, performance tuning and numerous tests. “We are prepared and ready to respond,” said Daniel Eichhorn, president and chief operating officer, PSEG Long Island. “PSEG Long Island is committed to continually improving system reliability and enhancing the experience our customers have when they connect with us, and we have been working nonstop to fulfill that commitment. PSEG Long Island continues to make strategic investments to serve our customers today and in the future.” IT Systems Enhancements and Testing Success PSEG Long Island has continued to make enhancements to its IT systems and has conducted robust testing of the outage management and telephony systems. Recently, PSEG Long Island completed a successful end-to-end test of the version 5.5 outage management and telephony systems in an extreme weather scenario. This endto-end test is in addition to other successful tests, which included one simulating up to 90% of the customer base reporting outages over a 24hour period. Business Continuity and Emergency Procedures PSEG Long Island updated its business continuity and emergency procedures to reflect changes and

The Children’s Summer Theatre series offers families several opportunities to enjoy a variety of free, fun and interactive shows at state parks throughout

Protect Your Parks: 4 Ways To Keep Facilities Clean year, when the COVID-19 pandemic was declared in early 2020, parks provided an escape for those who were unable to gather at indoor recreational facilities. Even though parks offered safe places to have fun outdoors when other options were limited, the pandemic affected the way the parks were managed due to budget cuts and reduced staff. This, coupled with a surge in visitors that continues today, only underscores the importance of all outdoor enthusiasts doing what they can to keep parks clean. The following are four effective strategies for individuals to keep parks clean. 1. Leave no trace According to National Geographic, Leave No Trace is a set of environmental ethics for interacting with the great outdoors. It follows guidelines for using parks in thoughtful, sustainable ways. In addition to carry in/carry out
policies for belongings and trash, Leave No Trace components involve making an effort not to disturb and plants and animals, hiking in appropriate areas, and using care when camping. More information about the Leave No Trace movement is available at https://lnt.org. 2. Manage pet waste The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that, in the United States, pet dogs produce more than eight billion pounds of feces each year, which equates to three-quarters of a pound per dog every day. Dog waste can contain bacteria and even cryptosporidium, a parasite that infects humans. Even though animal waste is organic, leaving it alone instead of picking it up can lead to environmental issues, including negative effects on local water supplies. It also smells bad and attracts flies and vermin. It’s important
for park visitors to pick up after their companion animals. 3. Reduce waste It can take roughly 450 years for a plastic water bottle to biodegrade. Even if they finally break down, bottles made from polyethylene terephalate (PET) can leave toxins in the soil and threaten fresh water. Use a reusable bottle instead of a single-use alternative when visiting the park. If plastic bottles must be used, be sure to place them in recycling containers around the park. 4. Volunteer Individuals can volunteer to pick up trash at their local parks. Various conservation groups and organizations organize trash pick-up events each year. Increased usage of parks means the potential for more trash and damage. Everyone can do his or her part to keep parks clean and enjoyable.

Cancer Advocate Lorraine Pace hosted a fundraiser at her home for West Islip High School’s Class of 1959 and 1960. The fundraiser raised $2,000 to support "Women & Men Against Prostate Cancer" with their goal in bringing awareness to this curable disease, especially with early diagnosis. Two years ago, Legislator Steven J. Flotteron was able to get Legislation passed recognizing September as Prostate Awareness Month in Suffolk County. Now, every year, the H. Lee Dennison Building in Hauppauge will be illuminated in blue from September 17 through the 19th in order to increase awareness. In addition, Men & Women Against Prostate Cancer and Catholic Health Services have partnered in increasing awareness of Prostate Cancer Prevention by offering Free Screenings at six of their campuses;

More About Life’s WORC Life’s WORC was founded 50 years ago after the closing of Willowbrook State School back in the early 1970s. As a young reporter, Geraldo Rivera exposed the deplorable conditions that existed within the then largest institution in the nation serving children with
developmental disabilities. Rivera first learned about these conditions from Life’s WORC founder Victoria Schneps. Her daughter, Lara, diagnosed at an early age with severe brain damage, was a resident at Willowbrook. When cuts in state funding caused the institution to fall into extensive disrepair, Schneps, along with other concerned individuals, picketed to fight for the rights of Willowbrook’s more than 5,000 residents. Rivera’s report, which earned him a Peabody Award, ultimately forced the closing of Willowbrook. Schneps started Life’s WORC and opened its first home in Little Neck, Queens. Its first residents were former Willowbrook residents. Today, Life’s WORC provides beautiful homes located across the region, from Nassau and Suffolk to Queens and Manhattan, in addition to community services, financial and trust services, and the programs and services of its Family Center for Autism.

The program, which launched this summer, was made possible through a publicprivate partnership between the County, the Suffolk Alliance of Chambers and Laborers Local 66 Union. The program was unanimously approved by both the Suffolk County Parks Trustees and then the Suffolk County Legislature at the May 11th General Meeting. Permits can be purchased in-person through the Suffolk County Parks Department at the West Sayville Administration Building (200 Montauk Highway, West Sayville). For
Suffolk County residents who are Green Key Card holders there is a $100 fee for a seasonal permit and a $250 fee for non-residents. Free Transportation Through ‘Ride United’ United Way of Long Island recently launched ‘Ride United’ to help local residents access transportation to receive the COVID-19 vaccine through the rideshare service Lyft. The program is part of United Way Worldwide’s Ride United Vaccine Access Campaign, which addresses unmet transportation needs for individuals and families. Long Island residents participating in ‘Ride United’ receive 2 free Lyft rides (up to $25 each way) to and from vaccination appointments located in Nassau or Suffolk Counties. Riders must download the Lyft app on a supported device and have an active Lyft account. “United Way of Long Island is committed to keeping our communities safe and healthy. Ride United removes barriers of transportation inequity, ensuring that any Long Islander seeking to get vaccinated can get to and from their
appointment without cost,” said Theresa A. Regnante, President and CEO of United Way of Long Island. Ride United expands upon the organization’s COVID-19 response efforts.
