The North Babylon Board of Education closed its 2018-2019 school year by celebrating student and staff accomplishments at its June 20 meeting. The district presented certificates to students recognized for their achievements in the Brookhaven National Science Fair. Student members of the Upstander Ambassador initiative were also recognized by the board, Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly and Town of Babylon
Councilman Terence McSweeney. Superintendent of Schools Glen Eschbach presented 13 staff members from across the district for tenure. Mr. Eschbach provided certificates to all recipients and commemorated them for their hard work and commitment to the district and community. “Many things are factored when making tenure recommendations and I can honestly say that each of you have
gone above and beyond my expectations and I see a very bright future for not only you but for the students of the North Babylon School District who will benefit from your instruction for years to come,” Mr. Eschbach said. “Congratulations on reaching this point and milestone in your career. I look forward to our future together and wish you a long and happy career here in the North Babylon School District.” The festivities continued

Pride Of Senior Lions Celebrated Beneath sunny skies, the 362 graduating seniors of West Islip High School’s Class of 2019 marched onto the Lions football field on the morning of June 29, ready to celebrate their commencement with pride and a shared sense of accomplishment as they walked through the gazebo to the strains of “Pomp and Circumstance” played by the school’s graduation ensemble, directed by James Krais. As family and friends looked on, members of the American Legion Post No. 1738 presented the colors. Student Senate president Catherine Fregosi led the salute to the flag, followed by the “The Star-Spangled Banner,” performed by National School Choral Award winner Lauren Leonardi. “Let it be said that you are leaving this high school a better place, due to your forceful ideas and meaningful contributions,” said Dr. Anthony Bridgeman, the school’s principal, in his welcoming address. “Today I am proud to
announce that as high school graduates, we have spent a total of approximately 338,400 minutes in West Islip High School,” valedictorian Madison Esposito noted in her address focused on the concept and perception of time. “Don’t let time pass you by blindly,” she told her classmates in conclusion. “Take charge of the memories that you create.” Using the school’s mascot for an overarching theme, salutatorian Douglas Dillman said, “Let me tell you about our jungle, where the Lion is king of all. At first sight it was vast and overwhelming, but the jungle became our habitat, a second home for us all. Once fearful, we now lead by example. In crowded classrooms, under bright stage lights, on sweltering sports fields, we have demonstrated the way a Lion moves – with courage and diligence. I choose to refer to us as one fierce Lion pride.” “Class of 2019, you leave high school in particularly interesting times,”
Superintendent Bernadette Burns said. “Yet despite the challenges and hardships, these are exciting times to be heading off to college or a career or both. Today you meet on this field to say goodbye to West Islip High School, but you begin a very new and personal journey.” Board of Education President Steven Gellar highlighted the seniors’ accomplishment and told them, “From the first day of kindergarten until the last day of high school, you have shown talent, determination and character. I have every confidence that you will continue to exemplify those traits and make us proud by doing great things.” Diplomas were presented, the colors retired, tassels turned and caps thrown high into the air before the new graduates walked out to the sound of the alma mater recessional, ready to celebrate their terrific achievement with the families.
Roundtable Enhances Student Voices Islip Middle School recently created a Buccaneer Roundtable to enhance student voices and leadership under the larger umbrella of improving school culture and climate. Last year, the school’s Student Climate and Culture Committee created a survey that was administered to all students. When the results were analyzed, it was determined that as students went through their years at the middle school, they reported having a decreasing say in activities, events and opportunities. The committee designed the Buccaneer Roundtable to counteract that trend.
Teachers nominated students from each grade and level of academic performance to join. The goal was to create a crosssection of the student body that could represent the diversity of thoughts and opinions within the building. Every six weeks, the Roundtable meets – joined by administration and rotating members of the student committee – to discuss issues such as school policies and procedures, bullying and cyberbullying, lunch and recess, school safety, and student well-being. Students are asked to bring concerns from the student body to the meeting. Administration
then made changes based on student feedback, such as creating a policy in which eighth graders are allowed to choose new lunch tables and spend recess in the courtyard every Friday. “This is a positive thing for our school because everyone gets a voice and the students get to be heard,” said eighth grader and Roundtable member Keyara Hassell. “The students like it because they can tell us their problems or issues and we can try to fix them to make the school a better place. I enjoy being in the Roundtable.”

One of the more popular tourist attractions in the United States is also a popular place to tie the knot. The bright lights of the Las Vegas strip and the surrounding area have drawn visitors for decades. Las Vegas also is home to more than 100,000 weddings per year, according to Clark County Clerk marriage license records. Weddings may be performed at local churches or other houses of worship, inside lavish casinos, or at the bevy of small chapels in and around Las Vegas. Las Vegas is sometimes referred to as “The Marriage Capital of the World” thanks in part to the ease of acquiring a marriage license in the city and the minimal costs involved to tie the knot. But Las Vegas is more than just a popular place to tie the knot. According to data gathered by Facebook in 2014, when the social media service compiled data from users “check ins,” Las Vegas also has grown into a popular honeymoon destination. In addition, Las Vegas also has evolved into a popular spot to celebrate one last hurrah before the big wedding day. Individuals frequently plan bachelor or bachelorette party weekends that incorporate all of the fun Las Vegas has to offer.

The Charity of the Month for July is: Rebuilding Together Long Island

Rebuilding Together Long Island (RTLI) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that is an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. RTLI works yearround with their focus on keeping people safe in their home, as well as making sure that they have safe access into their home. While most of their clients are elderly, they will help anyone who meets their income guidelines and classify as low-income with limited assets. Additionally, they have a special program to help our deserving veterans in need. As a way to thank them for their service, they created the Hero Home Improvement Program, which aligns with their mission of repairing homes, revitalizing communities and rebuilding lives. This organization performs repairs including carpentry, electrical, plumbing and home modifications (including wheelchair ramps for the physically challenged), weatherization, installation of smoke alarms, back and front yard clean-ups and more. Since 1992 they have provided repairs to over 2,600 homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Suffolk. There are many ways that you can become involved with RTLI, whether that be individually or as a company! Corporate sponsors are a huge help to the organization and it can benefit your company greatly as well. Corporate sponsors are companies that make the decision to fund a RTLI project for someone in need. Their employees will be able to participate in hands on work with the project they sponsor so their company can
have the chance to take part in a team building and community leadership opportunity. When they become a corporate sponsor, companies will get to see immediate positive impact on the life of a senior, veteran, disabled individual or a family in need, while demonstrating their company’s commitment to community service and improving the quality of life right here on Long Island. These sponsors will also get acknowledged on the RTLI website, in their quarterly newsletter and on social media. Additionally, if you are a business professional and are interested in getting involved with Rebuilding Together Long Island, the opportunity is available. RTLI is now interviewing business professionals to become an integral part of their Advisory Board and help advance their mission, whether it be through financial contributions, in-kind donations, networking capabilities or another way. Lastly, this organization is looking for people to fill the following volunteer positions: Crew Members, Electricians, Plumbers and Home Visitors.
