Caring For Granite Countertops (NAPSI)—Granite countertops are the most popular option available when it comes to kitchen or bathroom remodeling. They look great, they’re durable, but they can also cost thousands of dollars. Granite requires special care and attention because it’s a natural stone. Here are a few tips to help you protect your investment:
• Seal your countertops: According to the Marble Institute of America, an industry group, granite countertops should be sealed so that the stone is more resistant to dirt and spills. Check with the manufacturer or retailer about the best kind of sealer to use on food preparation areas. • Be careful what you clean with: Never
use ammonia—based products-or cleaners containing vinegar, lemon or orange—on your granite countertops. Avoid abrasive cleaners such as dry or soft cleansers. Don’t use cleaning products that contain acid such as bathroom, grout, or tub and tile cleaners. Specialty granite cleaners can be used, but they
can be expensive. There’s a way to stretch your dollars. • Mind your budget: JAWS Glass & Hard Surface Cleaner (www. jawscleans.com) cleans granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, glass and even your flat-screen TV. It’s also non-toxic and costs less than most other cleaners because each

There are also some other basic preventive measures you can take to protect your granite countertops: • Use coasters: Place a coaster under all glasses, particularly those containing alcohol or citrus juices that can

Pal-O-Mine Equestrian, Inc. (www.pal-o-mine. org, Islandia, NY), a private, not for profit organization providing a comprehensive therapeutic equine program using horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for children and adults with disabilities, announced that it is the recipient of a $7,500 grant from Suffolk County. The grant, which was awarded by Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, will be used by Pal-O-Mine to help fund the organization’s programs for veterans and their families. “Suffolk County’s generous grant to PalO-Mine comes at an especially critical time when more veterans are seeking programs to help them better understand their emotional and physical trauma,” said
Pal-O-Mine CEO and Founder Lisa Gatti. “Clinical studies and human experience has demonstrated the special ability of horses to help people heal and grow. As a designated Eagala Military Services Provider, we are able to provide therapy sessions and wellness events to our military community with staff who are credentialed in this international model. Pal-O-Mine has programs for veterans who served in Vietnam, the Gulf War, Iraq and Afghanistan, and in Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation New Dawn, Operation Enduring Freedom, as well as activeduty service members. These programs are also intended to help veterans’ family members. About Pal-O-Mine Founded in 1995 by
Lisa Gatti, Pal-O-Mine is a private, not for profit organization providing a comprehensive therapeutic equine program using horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for children and adults with disabilities, as well as those who have been abused or neglected, veterans and the economically compromised. One of those non-profits is Head Injury Association, located in Hauppauge, which helps people who have suffered a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) or who live with Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities (I/ DD). More than 270,000 people in the U.S. experience a TBI every year, with more than have as the result of an automotive, motorcycle, bicycle or pedestrian accident. “Our mission is to maximize potential among TBI survivors, and those with intellectual or physical disabilities, by providing the necessary residential and support programs to help them achieve our four valued outcomes: Individualization, Independence, Integration and Productivity,” said Barbara Senzel, Executive Director of the Head Injury Association. “We offer innovative and effective solutions to many challenges facing individuals with disabilities and their families.” The Head Injury Association also offers support and services to help navigate the eligibility process and throughout the application phase to assist in accessing supports and services offered through Head Injury Association. It also offers employment services, with Adult Career and Continuing Education ServicesVocational Rehabilitation (ACCES-VR) to achieve and maintain employment, and to support independent living through training, education, rehabilitation and career development. Another Kinexion affiliate organization is the Center for Developmental Disabilities, located in Woodbury. “We help children and adults overcome
barriers to living, working, learning and enjoying recreational opportunities in the community of their choice,” says Jay Silverstein, Ph.D., Executive Director of The Center. “We are dedicated to the achievement of excellence and innovation within a community based upon respect, kindness and open communication.” The center offers a variety of diverse programs include a Children’s Day Program, which operates 12 months a year and serving children ages 5-21 who have an educational classification of Autism, Intellectual Disability or Multiple Disabilities. The classroom curriculum covers academic subjects such as English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies, while also fostering the development of each student’s daily living skills and social skills. Computer and technology education are a part of each classroom’s weekly schedule.

Improved technology and the growing popularity of fitness applications, electronic wearables and step counters have made counting steps an easy way to count health benefits, as noted through a growing body of scientific research. A study presented at the American Heart Association’s Epidemiology, Prevention, Lifestyle & Cardiometabolic Health Conference 2021 (EPI), found that: •Study participants who took more steps in short spurts lived longer, regardless of how many steps they had in longer, uninterrupted bouts. The benefits leveled off at about 4,500 steps a day in short spurts. •Compared to no daily steps, each initial increase of 1,000 steps a day was associated with a 28% decrease in death during the

During the July 5 meeting of the West Islip Board of Education, Dr. Paul Romanelli was appointed as the next superintendent of schools, succeeding longtime superintendent Bernadette Burns. Dr. Romanelli will officially join West Islip on Aug. 1 as deputy superintendent before taking the helm as superintendent on Aug. 15. Dr. Romanelli and Ms. Burns will work closely during the two-week period to ensure a smooth transition in leadership. Dr. Romanelli has been a passionate and innovative educator for nearly 20 years. He joins West Islip from the Long Beach Public Schools, where he has served as the assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction since 2019 and previously worked as the principal of Long Beach Middle School. Dr. Romanelli began his teaching career in the Harborfields Central School District as a teacher of mathematics and literacy at Oldfield Middle School, at which time he was named Suffolk County Math Teacher of the Year and received the SCOPE Teacher Service Award. He served as dean of students in Harborfields and assistant principal of Plainview-Old Bethpage Middle School. “I would like to thank the residents and staff for the overwhelming support and positive welcome that my family and I have received,” Dr. Romanelli said. “West Islip is an excellent district and I am looking forward to working

Arnett, M.S.P.H., Ph.D., B.S.N., a past president of the American Heart Association (20122013) and the dean and a professor in the department of epidemiology of the University of Kentucky College of Public Health in Lexington. “It doesn’t matter
how fast or how far you walk, the important thing is to get moving. Counting steps doesn’t have to be part of a structured exercise program. Increasing your everyday activity, like parking slightly further from your destination, doing some extra housework or yardwork and even walking your dog can all add up to more steps and better health.” The American Heart
Association recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity each week. You can knock that out in just 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week. And every minute of moderate to vigorous activity counts toward your goal. Arnett points out that walking indoors at home, in a gym or even a mall can be easy ways to get beneficial physical activity. However,
research indicates that being outdoors in areas rich with trees, shrubs and grass (i.e., a higher level of greenness) may help reduce the risk of dying from heart disease. “Unfortunately, many people do not have access to safe walking trails or adequate green space. The American Heart Association continues to advocate for policy changes that make it easier for people to have access to safe places to walk,
exercise and play, as well as sustainable transportation options that integrate walking, bicycling and wheelchair use,” Arnett said. “The easier it is for people to engage in physical activity in all aspects of their daily life, the more likely we are to achieve healthier, longer lives for everyone.”
